I own the original disks to Freespace: The Great War. I have since dumped Windows and moved to Gutsy Gibbon 64 (Ubuntu Linux). I used Wine to install the original disks, but found that the program does not work in Wine. I then used Turey's installer to overwrite that directory. I get the following error when I run the open version of Freespace.
kurio@kuriosdesk:~/Games/FreeSpace$ ./fs2_open
ERROR: "The following species are missing icon info in icons.tbl: Terran Vasudan Shivan" at mission/missionbriefcommon.cpp:731
How can I fix this? Thank you for any assistance that you can provide.

You need to install to a directory like c:\games\freespace2. From that message who knows where you installed to. Move the entire directory then try again.

My Linux knowledge is not through the roof, but I'd still assume that installing anything to C:\Games\Freespace is rather difficult with any Linux.

Kurio... What exactly did you download? From the error it seems like you wouldnt have the retail tables at all... or then that particular file is just corrupted in which case redownloading the root vp file might do the trick.

That's your problem. Turey's installer works with Freespace 2 not Freespace 1. Delete your Data folder and Root.vp and it should work now. Failing that, run the installer a second time and get it to update any files that are missing or corrupt.

Aw, black hell. Missed that. I'm getting old...
Kurio, as karajorma said. Turey's Installer downloads FreeSpace 2, not 1. If you want to try to play the FS1 campaign, use the Installer to download FSPort, familiarize yourself on how mods work with FSO and play FSPort. It's just the FS1 campaign, except that you play it with the FS2/FSO engine.

Oh.. i understood he erased the FS1 installation and then installed stuff via Turey's installer...

:welcome:
The icculus project has installers for FS1 (http://icculus.org/~ravage/freespace/), Silent Threat (http://icculus.org/~ravage/freespace/#silentthreat), and FS2 (http://icculus.org/~ravage/freespace2/) on Linux.

Thanks Karajorma! You nailed the answer. Once I followed your instructions, the program worked perfectly. :)
