WIP name - it's the pre-Ragnarok viking god of Fire.
This is what i've spent the last week on... I'm attempting to get a more realistic (closer to :v:) mapping style, although the 'hull lines' will probably be dropped in the next model. It's a mix of work on PSP7 and Adobe Photoshop, which I'm learning justnow.
May revise the 'electromagnetic propellor ring' thingie textures.

Tech fluff :D
The GTB Surt was rushed into production towards the end of the second war with the Shivans, although the destruction of Capella ended the anticipated long campaign. The Surt differs from conventional heavy bombers such as the Ursa and Boanerges, in that it is designed to utilise a magnetically accellerated shell. The Surt was in fact designed to carry the 'Type 1' mass driver, capable of rapid firing up to 15 light uranium tipped shells in just under 2 seconds. 2 other varients of this weapon have been developed.
Since the Capella nova 3 years ago, the existing Surt class bombers have seen extensive use in border rebellions.
4 guns, 1 missile bank (the 'gun') firing specialised weapons. Fairly Ursa-like in perfromance, although a bit smaller methinks.

:jaw: The model and maps are great Aldo :)

Wow...impressive work, Aldo!

Thats a very good work. That designe is intressting and the Tex are awesome. When you make more such progress we will have some very good models.
BTW do you have made it just for fun or do you plan something with it?

I guess he made it for his own campaign, reciprocity (see the hosted projects forums)

:eek2: ;)

really nicely done there Aldo.
design wise I don't like the wing mounted double barelled gun.
It is badly placed tactically & looks out of place.
The Mass driver cannon is nice. Can it fire larger bombs at a lower Rate of fire? sort of like lobbing a cyclops at a cruiser at 300 m/s .

:jaw: :jaw: :jaw: Jesus tap-dancing Christ! Once again, another outstanding model by Aldo! If I had your 3llt skillz, I'd be in heaven.

Mediocre.
*pelted by Harbingers from all sides*
Hey! It was a joke!!

wow that's the 2nd best fighter model i've seen for fs2(Raizel is always #1).

Not sure yet. I had a second campaign idea I was going to work on after Reciprocity, which I might use it for. I'll probably release it reagrdless... it was really just a concept model to work on texturing. (the lighting settings on 3dex kind of give a false impression, actually - there's a shedload of shading on the maps that is being 'overridden' by the max strength lighting)
And the side gun placement is straight off an Ursa ;) .... although the ships closer to Artemis size.

Nananananèèèèèèèèèèère :D I win
Anyway, you obviously own me for mapping.
AND THIS IS NOT ACCEPTABLE :mad2:
heee.... willing to make a couple more models for me? :p
-
:jaw: :jaw: :jaw: :jaw: :jaw: WOW. The one thing I don't like about it is the gun on the side. Its to far away from the center to hit any thing but a really big target, just like the Ursa.
-
Thats a bomber?
It looks fast...
Very nice though...

Yup. It's gone

ummmmmm....wow*.....:jaw:
*double wow
Only thing I can say about it is that you should keep the hull lines in the next release...
-
Sweet work Aldo. How many polys does it have and what size/amount of tex. maps did you use?
Very cool :)

'bout 650 polys (triangulated), 6 512x512 maps.

Took up to much space - I'll try and make a smaller version (with a jaw that doesn't drop so far), in the meantime use  :))

Six maps!?!?!
Heheh, you must have an uber powerful gfx. card
-
It's very sketchish/drawing-boardish. You know like concept car sketches. It's like some obscure Anime alien ship.
You is 1337.
How does the FS engine handle it?
-
c'mon people. 6 maps! count the colossus maps damnit :p
ANy card that runs FS2 will run it w/o any pb. Remember my arcadia? it uses around 30 maps. so 6 maps= no big deal.

'bout the cheapest one on the market, actually (GF2 MX100/200).
Left & right sides, top, bottom, front+back, and the underside ring.
-
Yes :D the thread and reply's right now. I know you could do it HLP.
And my reply to this topic.
Mine is much worse then that. Its so old(1998) I don't even know what it is!

 Sorry, I shouldv've said "six 512*512 maps". All of the textures for the colossus were 256*256 or smaller which is what most graphic cards are optimised for (except the newer ones IIRC). Anything above this has an impact on the gfx. card's speed.
I guess I'm wrong though since you don't seem to be having any probs with it. How many fighters of this detail can you fit on-screen before you notice any probs?

no, actually, if the gfx card can't handle it, it will just scale it down. Well, most cards do that now anyway. Plus that's what lods are for anyway ;)

I've done some battletests of various ships with around 20-30 hi-res fighters (+ a similar number of standard FS2 ones, and several big ships) without any apparent slowdown.
Although I'm still testing - there's a couple of odd bugs with the Nightmare fighters where the players' ship - but not the actual gameplay - seems to slow down (it 'feels' heavier).
-
NICE BOMBER:jaw: :eek2:

Excellent :)
I hope my Voodoo 3 and 300Mhz k6 is up to the task, I can't wait to do a flyby on one of your capships in one of your fighters.
-
Impressive as always, Aldo. 2 questions: How long did that particular model take you? And how long did it take you to get that good with whatever program you're using?
Very nice. :jaw:
-
Surtur is the alternate name, and sounds vaguely less like a grunt.
-
I have a campaign (exodus) and I'm looking for models. May I use this when it's ready? Pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeease, oh pleeeease. May I, may I? :(

It should work fine on a regular FS-style mission... I'm going to try and beta test Reciprocity on my brothers PC, which is roughly the same as yours (bit faster, but a Pentium though). My Pc is pretty fast though, even if the GF2 is fairly crap, so it's hard to speed test these things.
I'll be adding lower res maps as well, though. Unfortunately, the LOD-ing is a bit guff, which annoys the hell out of me.
But, it look neat;

Very nice.
About 2 hours modelling it, and about 10-12 hours texturing (not sure)
I've been using Blender for modelling since, well, whatever my regdate is here.
-
That's... well, that's quite incredible, Aldo. ;)
I'm proud of you. I remember the exact day you walked in here flashing around your TS1-built SOC ship... was it a cruiser? I forget that much. Hoo boy, have you come far. :)

Ha told you all Blender was really good for your modeling skills!
-
Nice work Aldo. :)
-
wow, i like it!
it fits quite nicely with the freespace universe, but it also has a progressive feel that fits in inicely after Capella.
good work dude
:jaw:
-
I'm bumping this... it's just a really good example of hull plate detailing.:yes:
-
 WOW - that's all I can say.
Where did you learn to make textures like that?
If I send you my ships, could(would) you "skin" them, i suck at that.
Does anyone have some good written material about "skinning"?
-
:jaw: ;7 :jaw: ;7
-
Damn, I forgot about this thing. It's frickin' awesome!
-
Wow. I haven't wowed in this thread yet. Wow. Excellent textures.
-
slightly reminds me of the deminion from DS9
-
Can I PLZ use that ship for my missions, maybe for a campaign? :D :D :D
-
He'll release it soon enough. I just sent the interface art and weapons to him the other day. ;)

Yup. :0
I need to test if anything still has to be done, and also to try and get the magnetic accellrator on the underside to rotate properly, first.
Actually, it wouldn't be too hard to modify the ship to fire a beam from the underside, where the railgun is :D
