Title: MacOSX version not working...
Post by: Azoele on April 12, 2008, 06:23:58 am
It's like an old addiction to me... every once in a while I must play again FS2!
But now I'm working on a MacBook Pro (with GeForce graphics), so thanks to the installer, I was able to automatically pull down everything I need.
Unfortunately, FS2 Open 3.6.9 for Mac seems very unstable. Haven't been able to fly a single mission as yet, it crashes me when at the bar-loading screen after the briefing, and I need a manual poweroff.
Mac's still working, but the screen stays freezed.

I tried to run it in windowed mode, but it crashes as soon as select the pilot's name (although it plays the intro nicely).

Am at a loss  :(

Anyone has/had luck with the Mac port of FS2 Open?

this is usually the error if a *.vp file is missing...

on MacOS X the error-window does not pop to the front :-/

so you have to check that all files are installed

see http://www.hard-light.net/wiki/index.php/FS2_Data_Structure (http://www.hard-light.net/wiki/index.php/FS2_Data_Structure)

I had an issue where it froze anytime I moved my mouse to the right or bottom sides of the screen, but that doesn't quite sound like what you are describing.  But if nothing else works, I could give you a newer build and you could see if that fixes the problem.

Sounds like the same issue to me.

Finally got back to my computer (it's been a long week with no internet connection...).
I see there are talks of "different" builds od freespace 2 open, for Linux & MacOSX.
Where could I grab a different one for OSX to try to see if the problem disappears?

Grazie! (that's thanks! in italian :-)

The Cross-Platform Development board (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/board,113.0.html).

Thanks, heading there immediately.
But... have just found something strange...
my "data" subdirectory is empty!!!
I told the installer to put all the files in
/home/lorenzo/Freespace 2
and there they are

In "Freespace 2" I find many a subdirectory, and all the vps (sparky, warble...).
But the "data" directory is empty, there's just a subdir "freddocs" and a fs2open_pxo.cfg...
Is this my problem?

I re-run the installer, but didn't say anything was wrong...

Thanks!

The subfolders in \freespace\data are supposed to be empty. If you take a vp and browse through it with some vp viewer (like Maja, which is cross-platform and also works on OS X), you'll notice that it consists of a data folder, which in turn has subfolders, such as tables, models, missions and such. For example, a file in \data\missions inside a vp is equivalent to a file in \freespace\data\missions, or also \freespace\moddirectory\data\missions. It all boils down to the order in which the files are read and used. Generally, the data folder has higher priority than any vp in the same folder. A selected mod folder has higher priority than the root \freespace\ directory. And, inside a folder, a vp that has its filename come first in alphabetical order is read first, and the rest in the said alphabetical order.

Umm... in short, it is normal to have an empty \freespace\data folder. It merely represents what sort of folders you can create into \moddirectory\data folders.

Works!!!

I had to download taylor's unstable branch (30march 2008), and then it started working!
It crashed once of course, but at least I could play the very first (escort) mission :-)
Me has got a nice grin again :D

Now I'll see if the game loves to crash, or if it's playable...
