Post by: Killer Whale on April 14, 2008, 06:08:45 am
I'm going through the modding and campaign forums, and many of them are downloadable as rar. How do i use them?

Rar is an archive format like .zip. You just need a program that can open it. 7-Zip (http://www.7-zip.org/) is a good choice as it can handle the 7z format too.

www.filehippo.com is the best site to get RAR, or 7-Zip

The winrar trial never really expires. After 40 days have passed, every time you open up the program, it'll just say you should register (that's where you click ok or whatever to get rid of that dialog) and doesn't disable any features of the program. What's supposed to be an annoying feature of the winrar trial is not really annoying at all to make you want to register. Nor does it make you have to register. So if you want to use winrar go right ahead. It's much better than having winzip, i've never used the 7zip program before, idk what it's like.

But technically it is "illegal" to use WinRAR after the evaluation period without registering/paying. 7-Zip, as an open source application, doesn't have this issue.

And what is 7-Zip like? Well, like any archive tool. Not so shiny graphics-wise, but I think it's clear and logical. Has many language options. Doesn't do all kinds of stuff automatically (like taking over all archive file formats during the installation), but always recquires the input from the user, which means the user is fully in charge. Can be integrated to the context menus, so that when you right-click an archive, you get the standard options, such as "Extract here", "Extract to..." and so on. And many options for adding files to archives, like "Add to xxx.7z" or "Add to archive...". A small program. Doesn't consume resources and doesn't automatically start up n+2 processes during booting.

Well, getting a hold of 7zip sounds great in this case. Sounds like it has many things in common with winrar except for the fact that it's free.
