Title: Complete, fighter and weapon packs
Post by: --Steve-O-- on April 21, 2008, 07:11:33 pm
Most of the old links are dead due to the old file host being plagued with digital herpes, so i killed the links to keep it
from spreading.
so here's the download addys for my new fighter pack which contains all federal fighters i've done. it includes revised versions of the Saracen, Lancer, and Thor. the lancer and saracen mainly just received new cockpits, the old ones were...ehh
the weapon pack contains all the materials for the weapons these things are tabled for.
i decided to separate them, some might want just the fighters or just the weapons.

Good zark that is is a pack of awesome!  Two packs of awesome!

Can you give me a bigger version of the art for that miniature fake weapons bank 'fake gauge'?  For I am working on code (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,53429.0.html) to make such a gauge (sadly only 2d for now), but suffer from the curse of being a coder not an artist and thus unable to make cool proof of concept art for it like that one :D

I especially love the external weapons.  I hope others are inspired by your examples!

EDIT:  All in all a very impressive piece of work.  The model animations alone are such an awesome example to learn from.  Thought I'd point out a few minor things that could be fixed:

torpa.pof and dart.pof seem to be missing.  the readme mentions a sounds.tbl but I see none.  it also hints at a possible weapon_expl.tbl ?

Looks like you're using DXT3 or DXT5 for some of your effects (or whoever made em), but with a completely white alpha channel.  This results in black boxes around them.  DXT1c should be fine if you don't need an alpha channel (plus you'll end up saving more space too).  In particular I noticed archerflash, archerimpact, particleSmoke01, thorFlash and Vulcan_flash.

Might I recommend using the "generate icon" (http://www.hard-light.net/wiki/index.php/Ships.tbl#.22generate_icon.22) flag so they don't all look like the Ares on the HUD ;)

NICE!!! How do you turn the view in the cockpit?

Use the "show ship" flag.  Unless this stuff supports WMC's (IIRC) new cockpit model code.

Amazing stuff!  I wish things like this were released more often...

He's talking about the fact that the camera is at weird angles in the cockpit sometimes.  No amount of flags can do that.

Either get and use TrackIR, or bind a key to "Target Padlock View" and play around with that.  :)

man I wish I could afford TrackIR

... uhhh...

I have a problem with the vulcan, the mflash is a black square with a green dot in the middle. and then, you know those streams of orange that come out of were a ship gets hit? those are now groups of black squares with an orange dot in the middle.
And also, some of the weapons lack sound. does anyone at least know what i should put in the table?

Backslash, have you thought of trying Freetrack?  If you don't mind a bit of hardware tinkering that is.

Whoa!  Didn't know that existed!  Thanks.  Now to pick out a webcam  :)

Wow they're even working on Wii remote support.  I considered dabbling with that, seeing if I could make FS2 support the wiimote project, but it got way over my head.  This will save us the step.

Is there any way to spread those cockpits across all the ships in the stock FS2 campaign?  I don't care if they're not appropriate to the models, but I'm hot for a detailed 3d-cockpit to go with the new builds' padlock and view slewing.

How do you get the external effect for weapons? I could apreciate it in BtRL...I'd like to know how to handle it... :)

I forgot it...

Err ... not that I like necroing threads like this, but I found some significant issues with this pack.

Firstly, a number of the models seem to be missing.  This includes the dart model, the shark model, and the archer tech model.  Also, many of the maps and effects have transparency problems (eg. opaque cockpits and black boxes around effects).

On an unrelated note, the scale you chose for many of the secondary weapons is weird.  For instance, the Grimler, which is supposed to be the Trebuchet's successor is about the size of a harpoon :wtf:

Hmmm...the dart works well enough.
The Archer is actually built in to the FTF Wraith, so there's no separate model (like how the Thor's Hammer is built into the FTF Thor).

But yeah, the black boxes around the effects are annoying (though easily fixed be re-saving as DTX1-no alpha).

I was talking about the tech model, which appears in the loadout screen.

Also worth noting that most of the fighters have parts sticking out of their shield mesh, and many of the fighters' secondary weapon points are noticeably misaligned.  Also, most of the missiles are a little more high poly than they should be and none of the models, missiles or fighters, have LODs.

These are minor issues though.  I really like this pack :)

Go to the BP site.
The names are different, but that's about it.
