Title: Great Mod Idea
Post by: SpardaSon21 on April 28, 2008, 03:40:11 am
I can't mod (at all) but a great FS2 mod (for a game other than FS2) would be Nexus: The Jupiter Incident.  Currently Freespace 2 and all its incarnations involve fighter combat.  Nexus, however, is a Tactical Fleet Simulator, in which you command a few capital ships and just send those expendable fighters to attack the enemy while you prepare your big guns.  A FS2 mod for Nexus would be sweet.  If you have played Nexus, you will know why.  You get to command those big huge cap ships yourself and blow the crap out of the enemy's cap ships.  I can't see a reason to not play a FS2 TC for Nexus.  Beamcannons, laser turrets.  Of course, some creative license would need to be taken with cap missiles, shielding, and other weapons and etc.  But, if done properly, it might serve to reinvigorate the space genre a little.

It does sound somewhat interesting. There have also been discussion about mods for other RTS games that feature FS ships in the past. But I think you'd get better results if you brought up this idea on a Nexus forum, concidering that people here are more able to work with the FSO engine, which in most cases means flying a fighter and shooting at things.

There's a FreeSpace mod for HomeWorld2, which as far as I know, started to move again a bit. All it needs is people support to be fully continued. However, you can download the mod with all sides playable.

IIRC, someone tried to do a FS mod for Nexus.  There was a signifigant problem in that the ship weapon max count has an absurdly low hard coded limit, which meant FS capships simply couldn't be done properly.

Sounds great! When can you get started?

I don't know about anyone else, but I'd rather have people get these ideas out here rather than just keeping it to themselves; obviously if they don't think they can mod at all then they're not going to do it.

I don't mind these kinds of posts at all, it's good to see ideas get out there, even if they're stale ideas that have already been brought up.  What DOES bug me is people who jump into Mod forums and announce that they have no skill whatsoever, no intention of learning, but want to be included in the credits for a mod because they hung out in the chat room a lot.  Or people who, once again, no skill no intention of learning, come into a mod forum, criticize a design choice and demand it be done their way, demand a ship be put in, demand demand demand.

I guess, to finalize, for those of you who don't know how to mod, please be polite when you ask us for something.

Oh, I saw that part, alright. I just assumed that, since he had an idea but not the skills, his next port of call would be to learn the skills. I mean, when I had an idea for a campaign, I went through the FRED tutorial and bloody well learned how use it so I could make it myself. This is a more complex idea, so it'd take more time and effort for him to learn how to put it into action, but that's generally what happens when you start proposing elaborate mod ideas. Seriously, if he just came in to post an idea... what was the point?

You're right. **** suggestions and ideas; we don't need them. Really, look at the SCP; they didn't need people posting there and making comments and feature requests, or tweaks and suggestions. No way, man.

Seriously though, he's not causing any harm by posting his ideas and opinions. And on top of that, he never stated that he has no intention of learning how to mod. Thirdly, he's talking about a TC, which is no light task, and is not normally taken up alone by a newbie modder such as himself.

It's all right to post ideas here...
