I'll add more if you give them to me.
This means that if you play it recreationally (sp?), or competitively, you can check it, as long as you do it regularly.
Me: Swimming, Cycling, Skiing, and Paintball.
-
You forgot Badminton so I added it :)
Running, a bit of cycling, soccer, and badminton. The running and soccer the most as I get to do those no matter what the season is.
-
What, no chess?
P.S.
I'm serious (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chess#Competitive_play)
-

Don't abuse your admin powers. What if I say that badminton isn't a sport? What then?
I'll forgive you this once, being a fellow countryman.
-
I added gymnastics and football (American). Gymnastics is one of the best sports, I'd still be in it if it wasn't full of assholes.
-
you left out watching tv
-
Technically, gaming's a sport. More a sport than weightlifting, at any rate. :doubt:
-
Weight lifting is not a sport, unless you're doing it competitively.
Normally speaking it is an excersize, the same was running... but anaerobic
I still lift occasionally just so I don't get too skinny, and I enjoy football, but I don't really seek out games. If friends are playing I'll join

I would hit you with my racket (my old one) if you said such a thing :D
But I do appreciate being forgiven :)

Cycling for me. Got a new bike (http://www.giant-bicycles.com/en-US/bikes/road/1236/29251/zoom/) coming in this week. (Yay for graduation gifts!)
-
No fishing? :hopping:
-
Gymnastics 'cause I just quit this year and still goof around upside down sometimes.
-
Drinking and getting high.
-
I run a bit. I've always wanted to get into fencing (if not just to see if I'd like it) but as I'm in the middle of Tennessee, USA...the only sport is football.
I sweat sometimes when I play the violin..and I'm strained tendons several times (getting far too into it on some stuff)...does that make it a sport?
-
No Boxing? This is absurd!
-
Ultimate Frisbee is not on the list.
And now it is! :D
Heh, only sport I'm actually somewhat skilled at.
-
[/lurk]
I'd add Airsoft since Paintball is on there. Also you may or may not want to differentiate between Indoor Soccer vs. Soccer.
[lurk]
-
im one of the few Squash players :)
-
Ultimate Frisbee is not on the list.
Yes.
This must be on the list.
Also, does military PT count?
-
How about martial arts, to go with wrestling?
-
Personally, I voted Soccer (but I know it as football :P ), cycling and swimming.
If the options were available, I would also have chosen, bowling (ten pin, not crown green), pool and snooker.
And if I had the money, time and experience some form of motor sport would be on there, (I'd love to be a Formula one driver, but I don't even have a drivers licence).
-
What is this "sports" you're talking about? Oh wait. I vaguely remember swimming back in the days (2005 or something). After that... well, I do sometimes walk over to the store. And cycle to the uni, if the temperature > 5 oC and there's no snow. That's about it. I'm lazy. Too lazy.
-
Where'd my original reply go?? :wtf:
Anyway........
I actively run and cycle, Albeit in a gym........I played quite a bit of soccer football and rugby in school / sixth form, rugby in the army. But now i'm in a low activity/healing state. I need to get back into it progressively..
Although the running and cycling are not sports as i don't compete (as mentioned earlier) and Army PT is not a sport its a unified movement of a like-minded body of men(even if youre female) towards the end result of fulfilling the intstructors goals.
DAMN i love PT motivational speeches :D
-
Aikido and archery...
Cycling too, but not as a sport or exercise form but rather a way to move from A to B in the summer when the weather is fine and it's faster on short to medium distances than public transportation. The exercise value is an added bonus.
-
Wait... no inline skating :wtf:?
-
you need to add cricket ...............
-
martial arts. counted as "gymnastics"
-
No way. They're totally different -- Rian does (did) gymnastics, I do martial arts, and we can both attest they're pretty wildly disparate.
-
How the hell did I forget martial arts? Karate FTW.
-

They are quite different, but a gym routine is quite similar to a karate kata.
-
Right, but not all martial arts have katas.
I do krav maga, which is a hard Israeli military style focused on practical hand-to-hand techniques and fighting bigger, stronger people. A lot of groin blows, bites, and elbow shots; no ki, katas, or mysticism.
That said, I have a good appreciation for the value of karate -- it's just a different approach. I'd never want to get in a fight no matter what style I trained in, and karate's clearly valuable for many other reasons.
-
The karate I do (Shotokai) does not have any of the "fancy stuff". It focuses on actual fighting as well.
-
I personally play paintball, football, practice wing chun kung fu, and have just gotten into krav-maga :D
-
Here's my list of sports:
-
Frisbee, but not chess... :wtf:
-
Martial arts: specifically Gumdo (Korean form of combat with katana), and some Escrima (Filipino martial art with swords/sticks) I also do some running/cycling/swimming on occasion, not for sport but more for recreation/exercise. :)
-
A Katana? Cool.
-
I fence. Foil to date, but just started epee.

I am the crazy looking one on the right.

The only thing worse than an argument on the Internet is an argument about the superiority of one style over another! I would hate to start that. A full measure of respect for your style, and since I've never practiced it, I certainly can't judge it.
Out of curiosity, are you familiar with krav? I'd like to know more about your style.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shotokai (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shotokai) Is that it?
-
Here's my list of sports:
Aww c'mon, marching band counts doesn't it? ;)

Oh no, I wasn't arguing, just saying that not all karate is overblown and ceremonial. (most of it is, pisses me off)
And yes, that is Shotokai.
-
Where the **** is softball? Softball!!
-
And still no bowling, snooker or pool.
-
I added bowling, but by sports I meant active sports, not hitting a ball gently with a stick.
Oh and baseball.
-
What about Lawn Bowls? I'm quite the avid bowler these days.
And if you're going to try to argue that it's not an active sport, then clearly you don't know what it's like to play 12 ends of bowls on a hot, Australian summer day. Let alone dipping into a schooner at each change over. Try aiming for a white ball barely 5 centimetres wide from 12 metres away after 6 beers! Not easy!
-
I know that lawn bowling is a sport.

Bwa-hahahaha! You just made my day!
Current sports (?) consists mostly of 8 hours working for the Fatherland, then after a short eating break and after that 4 hours of kung fu training, totalling to 20 training hours in a week. Mika likes to whack stones and rip soft objects. Besides it's SooPah! Swords I find a little too finesse weapons for myself at the moment, a long pole is enough for a simple brain!
On the other hand, I have competed in badminton and break dancing when I was younger... so does that count as gymnastics?
To the downtown! It will be the 1st of May and let's get this party started!

I wouldn't quite go as far as to say that it's a fully fledged sport, regardless of the fact that I'm in it. An extremely intensive performing art, I'd say, but depending on this thread's definition of sport, I could see how it might pass as one. :)
[rant warning]
If you're looking at the physical fitness requirements, it's all cardiovascular, and not even that much. Last year in '07, only a really tiny snippet of our show was slower than ~160 or so (and that was because we were marching half-time for choreography), but even then, it took like 2 or 3 minutes for me to get winded (even though there was a huge percussion break during that time :nervous:). Compared to football and soccer, both of which I used to play, it's nothing.
But then there's baseball, which I also used to play, which is a lot easier than MB, even at its most energy intensive, mostly because all it involves is a bunch of short sprints.
Finally, there's the aesthetic value. Normal sports usually include two teams actively competing with each other. In Marching Band however, it's more of a passive competition, because you never really respond to the other bands' actions. For further comparisons, let's look at this chart.
X denotes a large part of the item, x denotes a small part of the item.
MB | Definite sports
x | X physically demanding
| X active competition
X | X practices
X | X discipline
X | X defined teams/groups
x | X teamwork necessity*
I say teamwork isn't a large part of Marching Band because during the performances, you never really communicate with anyone. You look at the drum major, the field, the form, and listen to other people. Assuming you're correctly tuned and warmed up, you can just stare at that drum major and the form and forget about everything else.
I go as far to say that band is a hybrid between a sport and a performing art at best. PCMB's schedule was pretty hectic last year, and the show was loud and fast. I'd say that's probably one of the closest.
Yet I must say that it is demanding, and unless you're in excellent cardiovascular condition, you'll get tired by the end of the show.
To sum it up, marching band (or at least the PCMB) is over-rated by its members, yet under-rated by bystanders who have no experience with it, and regarding more aspects than this, as well.

Were they simultaneous?

On occasion you may be surprised :)

That reminds me. Skiboxing and water biathlon are still missing from the list.
-
I figure if you get PE credit for it, then that's good enough. ;)

Breakdancing is dancing, badminton is badminton.
And marching band is running, I guess.
-
Paintball, running, badminton, tennis, skating, frisbee, archery.
A question though, there are only two votes for archery, me and another guy. Who's vote #2?
-
Herra.
-
Soccer, baseball, Football, and Snowboarding for me
-

-
Aloha, soul brother!
Is it more aerobatics or floor-o-batics that you practise in circus training?
I recall also one guy who practised quite a lot with ropes while I was practising floor stuff when I was still dancing. If memory serves, it was circus stuff that he trained.

Tennis is about it for me, and I haven't played that regularly since high school. I'm usually up for a pick-up backyard game of baseball/football/kickball/soccer, though.
-
1. Marching bands DO compete,
and
2. It's still not a sport.
-

That was rather... redundant. Even still, it's more of a sport than dancing, which is on that list.
-
It hardly matters whether it's a sport or not when it's plenty physically demanding. I think that's the general point of the thread.
-
baseball!
-
He means rounders

Well, chess is a sport and it's physically demanding despite what it might look, and it's still not on the poll... :sigh:

Same with Pool and Snooker!!!!
-
Pool is even more strenuous when you look at the majority of circumstances it's played in. Ie pubs with a fair amount of tipsy going on :)
-
Airsoft...
wtf man, none of you have actual guns? :P
It's been a long time since I did archery or fishing...and honestly I'd only do archery again given the chance. Soccer still on very rare occasions.
Also I deplore the horrible lack of ranges suitable for a rifle here.
-
I have two handguns and a rifle of sorts. But to be honest i don't practice shooting as a sport. There are a few ranges in London more towards kent. But my membership needs renewal and the price-use for me ratio isn't cost effective. :)
-
I don't have a gun, but a fairly powerful air rifle, and a CO2 pistol, which is even more so.
I really want a paintball gun for graduation.
-
He means rounders
no dammit, I mean baseball! :D
-
Rounders . . . :p
No cross country either? I'm getting back up to speed slowly and recently completed my first two mile cross-country run.
-
uncultured barbarians... :p
-
Fair enough if you can tell me any major DIFFERENCES (similarity will be debatable) in the rules i'll submit to your theory that they are indeed two different sports. :)
