actually, then what you should see are only black shapes :p

There could be another (much less brighter) light source around. Or another ship behind the camera providing reflected luminance. That would do the job.
I would've made the star more orange; and given the Orion a bit more perspective. But it's pretty nice - it'll serve its task admirably. :)

what really bothers me is that it really lacks any contrast... looks like a 100 years old photo

The sun isn't bright enough. You can see the centre of it, and being in space you should have been blinded by now :p
