Title: Memories: The old Shadow Build
Post by: S-99 on May 01, 2008, 04:33:31 pm
Heh, you missed DaveB showing up a few years ago and being the cause of the 'Shadow Build' by Bobboau, the entire forum has been suffering from a mild form of torture since it was removed ;)

Welcome aboard, and nice to see an old-hand reappearing :)

What was the shadow build? Sounds like it was before my time here.

It was a build where the ships cast shadows on themselves and each other, it looked stupendous, but was only a test-build, was very processor hungry and ended up being removed as Bob simply didn't have the time to work on it properly.

I know it's hoped that once the graphics system is re-organised, they will return, but until then we have only memories :(

No screenshots?

Unfortunately, there aren't any decent ones active in the thread, however, I do still have a copy of the build, I've just realised, so I might try and snap a few for you if I can get it working with the newer VPs :)

Some from the tech-room

And the Psamtik looking meaner than ever...(though somewhat shiny, probably because the VPs are newer than the build ;))

Hm, the Psamtik looks like it would with ambient set to 0. Try the Aquitaine instead.

It would also be cool to see a Ravana casting a shadow on the Colossus...

Oh. My. God. We need to get this implemented in the next SCP release!

Good luck getting that to happen ;)  There's a reason this code wasn't comitted in the first place.

I'll try to set some shots up, but the whole thing is very unstable, it'll crash if the Fenris is in mission, for example, so it's a question of finding which ships work ;)

I see we've done our usual Intercontinental Ballistic Subject :nervous:

Why no glowmaps?  Shinemaps seem to be working fine.

It's the way the shadows worked, it was, after all, only a test build. The shadows covered over ALL maps, glow included, so if a shadow went over a glowing part of the ship, it was blacked out

I'm getting the idea that this code was less-than-stable.

Fancy... This kind of stuff is seen on all the new FPS games nowadays. When was this first developed?

I assume 2-3 years ago from what has been said.

That'd look cool, and hardware would probably now run it.

Yup, it was put together by Bob just to see if it could be done, by his own admission he wasn't trying to be clean, neat or stable, just trying to figure out how the maths worked, as it were.

*Whispers* 3.7...3.7*

Bob added it cause Dave B mentioned it as something he'd like to see in FS2 that no other engine had ever done for a space sim. :)

The problem is that Bob added it all and then said something along the lines of "Implementing this has given me a very good idea what I should and should not do when implementing it properly" and then never implemented it properly.

So it's obvious that the way he had it working probably was rather hackish.

Well the fact he did do it has to count for something. (history)

I hope he returns to it later and even if it's a primitive one, refined enough for stability. Even a tiny enhancement is still an enhancement in my book.  ;)

Has Bob been away or is he caught up on something else ATM?

I remember that build. Gorgeous, tried it with the Babylon Projecct - looked great :) Wish it would make a comeback.

...and beams would fire, bombs would explode, casting silhouettes of the ships around them on each other :D

It would also be really epic to see bombers attack an orion, seeing each of their shadows dance upon the side of the destroyer :D
