Title: Widescreen Support?
Post by: HTWingNut on May 02, 2008, 04:00:54 pm
Is there widescreen support for Freespace 2 Open? Specifically I want to play on my Asus Eee (800x480 native). I only get 4:3 and 5:4 resoltions as options. Thanks.

I'm probably going to trade up to one of the Eee 900's probably when they offer the Atom CPU as well!

Try one of the newer 3.6.10 builds.  You can find them in this forum:  http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/board,97.0.html

Thanks, I'm kind of new to this Freespace 2 Open thing, and didn't see anything too obvious that looked like 3.6.10 build. Sorry, but can I get a little hand holding on this one? Thanks.

By the way, I'm looking for Windows version.

Most of the builds you find there will be for windows.  Look for one of the "trunk" builds.

Mandatory.

And I think you could just use Turey's Installer to install FSO.

Make sure settings are on low! I'm going to be getting one of the new Asus Eee PCs with a 1024x600 screen... Celeron M ULV 900MHz FTW! The model I'll be getting will also have 1GB RAM, WinXP, and a total of 12GB storage...

I used the installer, got everything fine, but in the resolution section, there is no 800x480 option that I see. Will "Low" settings offer up more screen resolutions?

Thanks.

If (and when) your hardware allows, you should keep everything at max on the Launcher. But I think the resolutions are 640x480, 800x600, 1024x768 and anything that exceeds them in terms of both height and width. As a side note, I do hope you are using Launcher.exe, when playing FSO.

And, as an aswer to the original question, a build with widescreen support (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,52260.0.html).

Thanks. Looks like the widescreen only supports those above 800x600 in any build I've tried.

Hopefully there will be enough interest to support the Eee's 800x480 resolution! Until then I guess I'll just run at 640x480.

I'm sure we'll get some better support soon. I missed my 5-minute window to order an Eee PC 900 on mwave--it was removed minutes after I found the page. Isn't there a custom string for resolution? $550 for a tiny PC--especially since it'll do everything that a larger PC will, but those larger PCs at the same price-point are too big and too heavy.

If there is a custom string for resolution, that would be great! Haven't found anything, but it may be a hidden option that hasn't been documented?

As far as the Eee (I have the 4G 701 with XP), I've been very pleased with it. The 7" screen is a little small for my liking but serves the purpose, but will get a 900 as soon as they are available with the Atom. The larger screen will be nice. My one gripe has to be the keyboard. For touch typing it is fine. Even for WSAD game controls it's fine. But for regular typing the keys are too small, and I have thin fingers too. I bought a small thin USB keyboard to take with me if I know I'm gonna do a lot of typing.

Otherwise, everything runs great on it as is. Pretty much any game released prior to 2004 has worked great on it. Biggest problem is that native drivers don't support 640x480, stupidly enough, but there are hacks that allow you to use it. And usually there has to be some workaround for 800x480 resolution, but in most cases there have been fairly simple ways. Except for FS2 Open so far lol.

There IS a registry key you should be able to change. I was just thinking of how I did it when I tried and failed to install FSO on my Win98 system. Pop open the launcher and setup the game but put it in 800x600 mode. Make sure you're using a widescreen build (it was linked in that post on the HLPBB). After you have it setup, open the Launcher again and take note of the registry location for the height of the screen--then go into Run and type "regedit" without quotes. Find the registry items for Freespace 2 and change the resolution manually to 800x480. See if that works. If not, I'd say you're best running it in original High mode at 640x480 and turn LCD scaling off (the black bars are better than a stretched image).

I'm not sure if that'll do it, but you'll have to ask around for it to be added to another version of the launcher. The widescreen build is in--and Freespace is an excellent open-source game that at least a few people will try on an Eee PC. As I said--I'll be getting one too, but the 900 version.

Did you overclock the processor at all? Any changes in performance?

Sorry for bumping an old thread but it's not quite a necro yet (<1 month)...

I just ordered my Eee PC 900 12G XP from NewEgg. Anything more on custom resolutions?
