Title: New to FS2
Post by: LastRifleRound on May 04, 2008, 08:38:37 pm
Ok so I found the download version of FS2 retail as I can't find the discs anywhere. I was a huge fan of the original Freespace and really wanted to play FS2. However, the download version doesn't have any movies. As I understand it, FS2 Open allows you to do this? My only objective is to play FS2 retail with it's stock campaign and all of the awesome cutscenes the Freespace universe is known for, not do anything crazy. What steps should I take? I have the FSO Installer, and am not sure how to proceed.

:welcomesilver:

You should be able to select what you want from the installer list.
If you don't want any of the mods and stuff, just don't check them.

Are the cutscenes included with FSO? I know there's something about ".ogg movies" but I am not sure what those are.

The download version of Freespace? You mean on HotU?

Use turey's installer.
It should show the ogg cutscene pack in one of the options, IIRC.

Yes.

So the .Ogg files are the cutscens. Ok, I'll give it a shot.

Some of them are.
Most of them are music though, I think.

no, the music in FS is in .wav format, IIRC.

Ah yes. The music in BP is in ogg. I got confused.

Ok I installed FSOpen 3.6.9 for windows with the custscenes checked and a few of the added campaigns and the Zeta media drivers (whatever the heck those are).

I still have no movies. I go to the "Intelligence" Screen, select cutscens. The introduction is there, but clicking play does nothing. The screen flickers for a nano-second and that's all.

Any other ideas out there?

You could download the cutscenes separately somewhere...

The links to the movies are dead in the thread you linked me too, so I cannot get them that way.

However, I thought I already installed them with FSOPEN? I have a file called "FS2OGGcutscenepack.vp" in my game folder.

Am I missing a step in activating the content?

do you have any of the cutscenes in .mov format?

No. There are several files that came w/the HOTU download that have a .mve extension. However, these seem to be too small to be FMV's (2 of them are only 1kb!). Perhaps I should delete these?

Yes it's probably still trying to run them. All the MVE's are megs. If you delete it and put the oggs in it should run them.

Excellent!

This worked! Videos are now running, game looks fantastic in high res. Outstanding!  :D

A few things to keep in mind.

If you want to play "retail" FS2, open the Launcher and under the MOD tab, select No MOD. If you want to play pretty FS2, select the mediavps folder as a mod. If you want to play the FS1 campaign with FSO, download FSPort (Turey's Installer can do this) and select it as a mod.

Certain command line options are highly recommended if you want to get the most out of FSO graphics-wise. This thread (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,53294.0.html) will give more insight on the matter.

Since you got the cutscenes running, it means that you are playing in OpenGL. Continue to do this. Even though Direct3D can be selected under the Video tab in the Launcher, it is not advisable, since it causes some graphics issues and effectively prevents the cutscenes from playing, even if you already have them.

If problems occur, do a search on the forums. There are quite a few problems that have been around for years and have also been answered. If, however, you are unable to find an answer, by all means, ask.

Ok well here goes  :D

I have no voice-overs in the mission breifing, and sometimes the missions just plain won't load and i get kicked out to the debugger.

I think my initial install was garbage.

Anyone know anywhere else to download Freespace 2 nowadays? Amazon.com has the retail version for sale for....get this.....$74 US!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Use Turey's Installer. Do it from a clean slate.

That's what I did. I downloaded this version from download-full-games.com or some such junk, pointed Turey's installer at it and downloaded the data applicable for windows. Then, I deleted the place-holder movie files (the useless 1kb movie files). I didn't do any other tinkering besides this.

Maybe delete everything and try using only Turey's installer? It's worked perfectly for everyone I know who's tried it. Don't even bother with download-full-games.com; Turey's installer will get you the full game.

Sounds quite fatal. The FS2 available on HotU is quite classy, since it is version 1.2 of the retail FS2, minus the cutscenes. Works like a charm.

Don't delete everything!!!! Keep the ogg movies since that will save you time and Turey's bandwidth!

:eek2: And we've got the better one for... FREE!
Well, of course you have the original when you buy the CD... But it isn't worth the money.

I have no voice-overs in the mission breifing.
Not all mods have voice-acting.

Delete everything but the .OGGs, as was said, EVERYTHING, and then run the installer. You can also keep the mediavps folder, fsport folder, and derelict folder.
