Title: Does HLP seriously rock or not!? :)
Post by: Sandwich on February 19, 2002, 04:36:04 am
What with all the complaints floating around recently, I have one thing to ask: how many hours of your day goes to these forums?

Y'see, I personally think HLP rocks. I've never gotten addicted to a website like I have to HLP. I've never seen my ICQ list increase so much - fully half of my 80 contacts are HLP'ers. I've made friends from halfway around the world. I've met people who have helped me increase my knowledge of just about everything enormously. I can't imagine a thing that I would be hesitant to ask on these forums, simply because of the level of support that can be found here for anything and everything - except FS3 of course... :p

Where would you be today without HLP?!?

Probably reading another webcomic, as I've been doing for the last two weeks.

I'd paint my orcs and my Tau! Damn HLP, because of that, I have dozens of figs that would have been painted for months now :D

Oh, you can't even begin to imagine the places HLP has taken me. It's made me a better person; allowed me to help scores of people in all sorts of ways; and it's spawned the Array, too. ;)

Like you, Sandwich, I've gotten to know so many people through HLP... except, instead of half of my 80-person contact list being FSers, half of my 180-person contact list is FSers. That's a lot of people. And some FSers are closer friends to me than my ... errrm, local friends. :D

Boy... where would I be without HLP? Not in a place as good as that, I'll tell you that, for sure. ;)

On a board whos login cookie Opera would actually save... Thats not HLPs fault so much as a side effect of it running UBB5. Now that they've upgraded (even though I'm still not the worlds greatest fan of vB) I'll poke my head in a bit more.

Oh, and hours! Hours a day... well, it depends. If I don't have anything to do, I could probably spend 10 hours here (even more if I can get my hands on an IV feed for pizza...). But usually I'm limited to about 2 or 3 hours/day. That would amount to thousands of hours over HLP's lifetime. I love this place. ;)

Well, you can see I don't post much, but if you bother to check the (now available) online users list, you'll see that I'm online for, usually, 8 to 10 hours a day - meaning all the time that I'm at work. Yes, I spend more time on HLP than actually working, but what the heck, it's a lot more fun.

Everyone here must be congratulated for this: Setekh and Thunder for creating such a nice place, and everyone else for keeping it nice and interesting. There are few communities out there on the big bad net that are this friendly when they become this large. This is a true achievment, and I truly hope that the creators are able to realize the grandeur of what they've built. Good work everyone.

Okay, okay, enough with all the free praise - can I get my admin powers now? :D

Bah. I haven't been around for months. Got bored with Freespace and started hanging around more at Warpstorm and Spacebattles.

And reading those damn webcomics. They're destroying me.

  (means, look above btw :p )

let see... mmh, I get up at 7am. my computer's already running ( I don't shut it down, because of Kazaa :p ), 3 minutes later I'm in front of my comp, having hrrr how do you call that already? let say morning lunch :p. I check HLP, then it's time to go to school. I go back at 12.10, PC still running, I push the refresh button and check the forums again while I'm cooking and having lunch. I puch refresh till 01.15 pm actually (and I doom the lack of the replies, usually). At 5pm, I'm back, my PC's still running, but nope, not HLP, I'm watching the 3 animes in a raw on TV :p
Then I log to HLP, from times to times I check another forum or site, but otehrwise, I stay logged on HLP till... about 3am. Then gone to bed, try to sleep (coz my PC is damn noisy), and then all begins over again. so that's, about... 11 hours on HLP a day... Damn, now  wonders why I have the second biggest postcount here :p

well. i came from Freespace Watch...so where would i be without HLP?...

1)Stuck with Geocities as my host
2)Stuck in a community where people are far less helpful and far more hostile
3)Stuck at every bug in my campaign that i can't figure out (just about 20 by now)

So i'm very grateful for HLP, the 158th would have ditched by now if it weren't for the people here.;)

Thank you HLP for giving me something to do with my life, namely being online looking at this instead of doing schoolwork which I put off forever...;)

Excerpt from documentary aired at Interstellar Information Web, subsection of the Interstellar Wide Web, at January 7th, 2201:

Documentary starts, showing images of computers, people browsing the net, etc.

It was two hundred years ago, the day when mankind's evolution began. On january 7th, 2001, the first version of the Hard Light Productions website was brought online, a shy beginning for that which would become the greatest of all human societies. Since the very first days, enlightenment filled those web boards, a shining beacon of sanity and peace floating ominously above the sea of insanity and despair that was the world wide web. For the first months it strived, it grew, gaining members and knowledge, arts and science flourishing as the young community built strength. It's first anniversary was celebrated with much rejoicing, but even in their wildest dreams the creators and members of the Hard Light community could not have imagined what would become of it.

Five years passed, and the originally small band of players, artists and modders that created the site was still growing. Thousands of new members joined every month, and peace and prosperity still reigned. It was then that the revolution began. With a network of thousands, if not millions, of contacts all around the world, Hard Light Productions began it's march. Funded by several private companies and government agencies, among them Exys Connectivity and Opticnerve, HLP launched a massive campaign, reaching the farthest corners of the Earth, breaking cultural, historical and ethnic barriers, bringing not only modders and artists together - but bringing mankind together. It was seven years after that that the first physical Hard Light settlement was founded. Named "Arcadia", this settlement soon grew to envelop an area large enough to be considered a country, and soon enough it would be able to reclaim it's independence - on the first completely peaceful independence agreement in Earth's history, Arcadia was recognized as a sovereign nation, covering an area of over five million square kilometers in South America. It's first prime minister, Edward Woo, created and maintained peaceful and mutual beneficial relations with most nations of the world, and the community grew even more. But the march wasn't over yet.

Each day more and more people adhered to the Hard Light Productions phylosophy - that of peaceful cooperation, of benign competitiveness. Arcadia was no longer enough to hold all the newcomers, and soon other nations pledged their alliance and support, becoming not only protectorates, but integral parts of the ultimate dream. After a few decades it was the nation with largest surface area and population, at the same time being the single country with no poverty or illiteracy. A land of friendly and wise people it was, indeed. Extreme intustrial and scientific productivity boosted it's place among Earth's powers, and it became the first true superpower in history not to possess a true army. Democracy at it's best ensured great living conditions for those who worked, and a strong education system ensured that everyone knew their part to keep the society running.

The most notable fact of Hard Light Productions history, though, happened almost a century after it's original creation. In march 2098, the last of the world's nations, the United States of America, wilfully joined Arcadia, and Earth was finally united. The original humble objective of HLP's creators had grown into mankind's greatest achievment, as a world of hard-workers, scientists and artists could finally rejoice with peace and prosperity guaranteed. Arcadia strived ever since, reaching for the stars, the depths of the seas, and the most obscure reaches of the human min...

I spend about 4hrs a day on HLP. I only have ICQ because of HLP.

Since my life revolves around my network (be it at work or at home) HLP makes an excellent distraction. Besides, sometimes I learn stuff. :D

Without HLP I'd have more of a social life (cant have too much of that :p).
I'd probably be passed out in the gutter drunk a lot...
more than I usually am anyway...
And a crack addiction... but thanks to HLP, I have found a safe alternative :p SpaceCrack :D, God's way of telling you that you spend too much time online...

If I wasn't on HLP I would probably spend that time either posting more on the SSC forums, playing games, doing math problems or working on my lego model. I normally do all of those things but the lack of HLP would free up a lot of time in my day.:D

When I have the time, I am one of those nuts who sits at the forum refreshing the page every few seconds to find new replies. :D The first thing I do whenever I get on the computer is to come here.
