Title: Pimp FSO
Post by: colecampbell666 on May 08, 2008, 06:47:14 pm
Make some cool FSO-pimping stuff. Example, and my first piece using GIMP:

And the beams don't look like that when you view it full-size, but that looks cool.

It's not supposed to be like that - he said. I guess the forum (or tinypic) did something.

Click the image to get the full one, you'll see it's not like that. That happened because of the resizing compression, it omitted some pixels.

I see, it has an alpha channel...?

Still not sure if that is why the beams and the sun are black...

It looks damn neat though. :D

Yeah, I used alpha transparency.

Which is why when I post it it looks HLP-orange.

Why use the alpha channel instead of white?

I can't really do anything about the planet, and that sun is as good as I can get it.

Just put a white background behind it and it looks fine.  (can be done with photoshop etc).

Can't work for me. Whenever I copy the image into gimp or paint or something, those "alphas" turn into not-alphas, and very ugly as well. Cole should be able to do it; he's still got the original.

It worked for me when I downloaded it and opened it with photoshop, rather than just copying it.

That's odd. Shame I don't have tons of money/bandwidth to throw at photoshop, otherwise I would try that as opposed to Gimp.

Have you tried that method with Gimp?

As far as GIMP and Photoshop are concerned, how does Paint.NET (http://www.getpaint.net) stack up?  I've got both GIMP and Paint.NET; I don't use either, b/c I'm not too GFX-l33t, sadly.  I do mess around with them sometimes, though.

Paint.NET is free image and photo editing software for computers that run Windows. It  features an intuitive and innovative user interface with support for layers, unlimited undo, special effects, and a wide variety of useful and powerful tools. An active and growing online community provides friendly help,  tutorials, and plugins.
It started development as an undergraduate college senior design project mentored by Microsoft, and is currently being maintained by some of the alumni that originally worked on it. Originally intended as a free replacement for the Microsoft Paint software that comes with Windows, it has grown into a powerful yet simple image and photo editor tool. It has been compared to other digital photo editing software packages such as Adobe® Photoshop®, Corel® Paint Shop Pro®, Microsoft Photo Editor, and The GIMP.
The programming language used to create Paint.NET is C#, with a small amount of C++ for installation and shell-integration related functionality. The source code is available under the terms of the MIT License.

Paint.NET is used by my friend, but it doesn't seem to be as good feature-wise as GIMP.

Yup. I would've posted my stupidity, but I had a hunch that if I tried it wouldn't work.

Oh, it most certainly is not, but egad. The user interface is so simple, so clear, so... pleasant, I might say. That's why I use it.

You guys realize that this wasn't a topic to show off that one shot? This was so that other people could do stuff like it.
