The only reason I've registered is because I'm suffering from a Frame Rate issue I can't seem to find any where.
I'm running the Retail version of Freespace 2, 20th anniversary edition on my pc with the most god awful frame rate ever.
My video card is a Nvidia 7800 GT, the drivers are up to date.
The processor is an AMD 64 3000+, 1 gig of ram and a K8n neo4/sli platinum.
The setup suggests high everything even before I detect the card * go fig *.
I run the game on or even off 98/ compatibility mode with the same sluggish frame rate. I william shakespear couldn't even describe the sheer pain I had on the demo, flying through the nebula.
From screwing around in the game I've found that the more ships are on screen the slower my frames get, I think five and I'm dead in the water. And thats just fighters.
I've done no real manipulation to the game as of yet, so if there is a patch on a server that doesn't require me being buttbuddies with file shack or some other corporate sleeze I'd be much abliged.
I haven't played Freespace 2 at all, but I played great war and loved it to death.
Also I'm hoping this post will leave a trail for other poor SoB's in my position.
P.S. Wow, remember when companies put time into producing large beautiful box art?
-
Well this may be one possibility http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,53110.0.html
Also you should get FS2 open and give that a try. Just use Turey's installer. It doesn't mess up retail at all so you can always go back.
-
Testing right away.
I had problems running The great war recently too, but not in the past on this machine. Chance thats the problem.

WOW, Thanks much.
This game runs like it did back in the old days on my 98, I can finally have some closure with me and freespace.
Again thanks.

Retail FS2 is serious fun, but I'd still recommend you gave FreeSpace Open a try. Turey's Installer makes it easy as you only need to download it, run it and point it at your FreeSpace2 folder. It won't break anything, but it will get you a kick-arse game engine, positively stunning graphics, the ability to play the FS1 campaign and Silent Threat with the FSO engine and better graphics, as well as several high-quality usermade campaigns.
The reason why I'm recommending FSO is that it often works better than retail FS2, and your rig sounds like it wouldn't have any trouble dealing with at least the 3.6.8 Zeta MediaVPs, which, simply put, are really purdy graphics.
-
In FS SCP ( Open ), you can turn on OpenGL ( which makes the game run with a much higher performance ) and etc. Download the exe files and the launcher for that ( no more than 5-10mb ). For good graphics you'd need the mediavps, which is quite large.

Hell, he can use the .10 AdVPs with that thing. I can.
And LT, read this (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,53294.0.html) thread to get the most purdiness.

Okay so I'm downloading the Open thing because I am a tool and the idea of cherished game + Improvements = **** I always complain about not happening.
This and I am a whore for Duke Nukem hi-res pack.
So I downloaded Toreys, Turies.....Mr.T's Good for the install file and my god I can't say I wouldn't have chosen the same layout Mr. T. Then I'm sitting here, Mac Install bla bla? I don't own a damn mac so screw that. Oh god the useless OS X, throw that out and so forth. I saw what appeared to be a campaign that described something so juvenile that even I at age 15 would never dream of trying to make. Sure my **** was same old 3 cruisers vs 3 cruisers but by god atleast it was relevant to my interests.
I didn't have Freespace 1 installed, so I'm hoping that FS2's directory will be adequate.
On a side note, Freespace 2 was every bit of nastalgia and entertainment I had dreamt it to be. Who said sequals never live up to their expectations? **** YOU BUNGIE! **** YOU!
-
I didn't have Freespace 1 installed, so I'm hoping that FS2's directory will be adequate.
Quite adequate. But I hope you downloaded FSPort with Turey's Installer, since FSPort is a "mod" that allows you to play the FS1 main campaign with the FS2/FSO engine, making it, oh, so much prettier.

Well, actually the campaigns that the Installer offers to download are widely regarded as good. There is no newbish "kill all the lucifer's :)" **** in there. Some, like Derelict, also include voice acting. But if user made content really isn't your cup of tea, by all means, just skip them.

1. My good man Mr. T seems to know literal definition. Dear Mr. T Damn your eyes good sir! one less thing for me to piss and moan about!
2. Deus Ex eluded my interest. As an Irishmen once said...."When I wants water, I drinks water. When I wants whiskey, I drinks whiskey"
-
Deus Ex Machina is one of the four known humour campaigns, with the other three being the Just Another Day trilogy. And they're all quite amusing. I'd recommend. Unless, of course, you don't like funny FreeSpace things.

oh joy, I thought it was bad writing.

Okay after running this installer and starting up FS2 I'm not seeing too much of a difference. Did it not deliver the good or am I not following an instruction?
-
Well, what mod(s) have you selected?
Good way to check if mediaVP's are activated is to load up the Mainhall, then press F3 to open ship lab, and navigate to Ship Classes->Terran->GTF Hercules. If you see a pilot, mediaVP's are working; if not, you need to make them work. :)
Graphical user interface solution: Go to Launcher's MOD tab, and select mediavps as active mod. That will give you the new models and effects (and some other stuff) and you can use them in the retail FS2 campaign.
A command line based solution (and, in my opinion more useful and easy to use): got Launcher's Features tab (IIRC), find the Custom command line text window, and add the following words: -mod mediavps. The reason why I prefer this way of selecting mod folders is that I use *several* mod folders at once, and they change from time to time, so managing them with the MOD tab and mod.ini files gets really inconvenient, whereas with the custom command line I can just string mod after mod and not worry about mod.ini's... in fact I usually either remove them, or clear the secondary mod references from them...
...but for now, you don't need to worry about that since you're about to just use mediaVP's...

Hmm. You do have a point there. I think I shall also switch to that technique.

I've done that.
Opened little launch panel in my folder, Selected its origin after install, Select apply and hit run. I'm not seeing any changes.

That's good but did you select the mediavps folder as a mod either by using the Launcher's MOD tab or using the command line parameters? If not, the game will look the same as it has always looked.
-
First of all, use the Launcher.EXE file, and not FreeSpace2.EXE.
Read the "How to make FSO look pretty" link in my sig, to find out what to do to get the best graphics.

I've done that, I've also tried using FS1 port and it hops me right back into FS2
-
Well, something isn't right here.
1. Did you make the Installer download the Media VPs?
2. What build (.exe) did you select with the Launcher?
3. What do you have in your fsport folder?
-
Ok, post your FS2 folder. (do you know how to take a screenshot?)

I'm pretty sure I used the right exe, let me try another to be sure.

Hmm. What's with the mod.ini in the folder? More importantly, what does the mod.ini say?

[launcher]
image255x112 = FS2.bmp;
infotext = Freespace II. No mods. No new effects. No new graphics. Freespace II Classic if you will. Select mediavps as your mod to activate the new graphics. Select fs1port to play FS1 or Silent Threat with SCP enhancements. ;

Basically says that when I select no mods in the launcher.

That should be there, Lobo. Turey adds it in new installs.
Could we have a higher resolution?
Use tinypic.com.
-
All this time I never tried port. Movie booted right up (ah nostalgia)...
So tell me (since it's been so long since retail) is this different?
I see glow, blinky lights and shine and better hull texture.
Oh and I recommend Derelict (especially because I'm in it..)
;7
One observation I had no weapons and in the training mission the freighter called in was a uly...
Was it because I didn't make a new pilot? (no worries I was just checking if it would run for me, I work on several mods at once).
Oh and I noticed fsport does not have it's own bitmap?

1. Probably a corrupt pilot.
2. No it doesn't.

I thought it was big, but I guess I shrank it by accident. I should know better considering I do this sort of thing all the time. hold on....
Okay its not me, wow since when was imageshack so stingey.

Ya, after seeing what it holds inside, it does seem acceptable.

It's purdier.

Concidering that you are sort of a veteran at HLP, I do hope that you remembered to select the FS1 campaign from the Campaign Room. If yes, then I would also bet on a corrupt pilot.
-
Interesting, this campaign you speak of....
It's been like 2 years since I chose one so give me a break.
(Everything I have done or tested has been in single missions)
My kill record is quite diverse. :D
-
OK, delete everything with a red dot. You can delete the yellow-dotted stuff, it's just old retail stuff.
Funny, this is the second time I've seen people with the PXO/Squadwar files in their folder. Is that a symptom of a retail install?

This is FS2 retail, the special edition with over 20 additional missions.

Alright its running and wow, didn't think it was going to look this good!
My only gripe is I'm getting a second set of stars and I think they are clipping through things and not all of the ships have new models. which I'm sure is easily fixed and as for new fighters, I'm sure they are all in progress.
Oh and the annoying MS Sam voice playing when I inspect things, Sorry guys I like reading, not being read to!
Also I get an error when starting my first FS1 mission

That might be part of the problem. A clean install would have no remnant of your earlier program to try and over-write. I used to have lots of "garbage" from forgotten vp's and what not that made a mess of things.
Hope you figure it out, it's worth it in the long run.
:D

That star thing sounds weird. Don't know about models, but most ships have had their textures revamped. Though the Myrmidon is one that is ignored even today.

Open the Launcher, select the Speech tab and untick all the options.
Also I get an error when starting my first FS1 mission
Since the word "Iceni" is included, I suspect that you too forgot to select the FS1 campaign from the in-game Campaign Room. Unfortunately, it is not enough to just select the appropriate mod folder. You must also select the corresponding campaign once you've started up the game.

He's probably referring to the retail stars, which clash with starfiled.POF.
@LT, The stars are like that, no changing it. Could you get a screenshot? Press "printscreen", and then look in "\FreeSpace2\screenshots".

That sounds about right, A screenshot I don't think would help. Basically I spin around and the stars spin but not with the others. Its like having foreground stars and background stars.
I don't notice it too much, but it's kind of annoying.
-
The number of retail stars can be set to zero in mission files, so it's mission specific. In my opinion, if you use a skyboxed stars - and especially skyboxes with planets on them - using zero retail stars looks a ton better. I've never been a fan of any kind of motion blur effects anyway.

Neat.
I also saw a thread a while ago about an apollo fighter model with open cockpit and all, any one know where that was?

Wow, its as pretty ever time I see it. So where do I stick this bad boy? I looked through the files and folders and didn't see any familiar names.
-
Place the vp to your \mediavps\ folder. And a copy of it to your \fsport\ folder. At least I couldn't get it to work wit hthe Port if I only had it in the \mediavps\ folder.

I'm seeing, PCX, TGA, TBM and POF files.
Shine, Glow , Shields , Shp * I assume means the ship itself *-apollo, Fighter04 and HTL apollo.
Give me a home.
-
That's because the Port has it's own model and overwrites the one in the mediavps.
-
So I just toss these in the data folder under Fsport and Mediavps?
-
If it's a VP, then just add it to the FSPort and mediavp folders.
-
Oh, bum grapes. It was a non-vp one. Oh well.
PCX and TGA to \data\maps
TBM to \data\tables
POF to \data\models

Okay well I just put them in and started it up and nada. Still got the old shiny apollo.
-
This is getting troublesome...
Forget about that Apollo thingy. Instead, download this (http://koti.mbnet.fi/reiler/FunkyFreeSpaceStuff/Apollo_HTL.vp). It's a vp so just punch it to your fsport folder, and possibly to your mediavps folder.
