Okay, imagine the situation:
One nice day, you're at home, leisurely browsing the Hard Light forums, when someone knocks at your door. You go answer it, and it's some weird-looking guy you never seen before. You ask what he wants, and he says "Heya, it's me! [insert name here] from HLP! Can I stay at your place for a couple of days?".
How would you react? Would you let this person stay at your home for a few days if he needed it? Would you invite your friends from HLP to spend holidays at your place?
I'm asking this because I want to know how do you all feel in relation to online friends - do you consider "real" friends or is there a distinction? How far would you go to help these people you've only met through a bytestream up to now?
If the answer is yes, please post your full address and contact information. :D
Just joking, you don't have to do that...
-
well, the guy would be quite, well... :snipe: (gotta love that smiley :D) when he seems my lil student room, no room for an additional person excpeted on the floor, but sure, there's some guys down there I wouldn't mind meeting for real :)
-
Heck no. I don't want your grubby fingerprints all over my precious comic book collection.
Probably ask me to share my cola too. Greedy little bastards...
-
I would, it'd be a laugh - although I'm naturally shy around people I don't know so it'd be pretty weird, but it would be kinda cool. Assuming the person didn't turn out to be a raving lunatic.
-
Well, I think Styxx and my answers are fairly obvious..... I'm using his home computer right now.
We're supposedly going out to an all you can eat steak place tonight, yum yum!
-
Heck, i'd be glad to have someone from HLP over...they could keep me awake with incesant (sp) chatter while i write my campaigns. Maybe they'll even be so nice as to be my cokeholder ;)
Seriously though, it would be nice to actually meet someone.
-
lol :D
only pb is the cash to move somewhere else, for me :p (and the work and the etc etc etc)

Hey, and I suppose that in a distant future, when I get a vacation (if the world hasn't been engulfed by the then red sun and the polar caps haven't melted and mankind hasn't annihilated itself through nuclear holocaust) I might be going to Canada to see what real snow looks like, eh? :D
-
Yeah would be real cool to meet some of you guy's:) Infact i am going to englend next week or in the summer vacation to tour around on my own and vistit some ofyou guys:)
-
I think my wife would have to answer this poll for me. :)
-
heh.. i bumped into a guy i knew from another BB in a local pub all the sudden... he said "hey ! i know you ! you are Shrike !" we then proceeded to drink each under the table..
i still meet him
-
Hey! It's the other Shrike! :D
-
- Shrike, meet Shrike.
- Hi Shrike.
- And Shrike, this is Shrike...
- Heya Shrike!
:D
-
Yeah I'd let them in. Of course this visit would have to be announced and not just "hi im here, can i come in"
Never know what maniac hackers are out there with personal info.
-
There's a difference between meeting people on the forums and them suddendly appearing at your door/hole/thingy :). Be a big difficult for some, one of the people at the VWBB is stationed on a US Navel vessel.
:bump:
-
Well, imagine that you're waiting for that person in the airport then. I mean, if someone you know from HLP asked you if he could stay at your place for some time, would you let him?
-
I'd let anyone I vaguely knew stay at mine. I'd sleep with a knife under my pillow just incase though.
-

Most people sleep with a knife under the pillow anyway or in america a gun.
-
Well, I don't sleep with a knife or gun under my pillow, but I rigged the place with explosiv... wait, crap, Shrike might be listening. :D
-
I've met people before....Orange, Dynamo, Remora, and WildWolf....not sure about having them over in the first place...but now that I know them I don't think I'd feel too uncomfortable.....so yes....

yo Admin Shrike person we need to work something out... i want my nick ;)
-
Too bad. I got it first. :D
-
I'll only let you guys in my house if you give me presents. :) ;)
-
For me it depends as Being only 15 i still live mum and dad and brother and sister :(.
And it depends on the person from HLP boards who knocked on me door, liek for example if it was erm *picks someone i dont know on HLP forums* Lonestar, then no as i have no idea who he is but if it was someone i know alot more then maybe :).
-
Well, Styxx and I are gonna kidnap Setekh and take him to E3.....
I've said too much!
-
I doubt anyone would let me within three miles of their house if they knew I was coming ;)
Perhaps I should go and call on M'Prok some day...
-
What? Let strange people who I've never met before into my house?
Yeah, I'd be ok with that..
But you're getting your own booze!
-
Yeah, right! As if any of you would be brave enough to show up at my house (aside from Ace Pace, who lives a few blocks away anyways... :p)! Gunfire ( :snipe: ), suicide bombings... you wouldn't be able to fall asleep! (Yes, you can hear the gunfire from my room...)
All that aside, I'd love to see anyone I know semi-well, especially Setekh, over here. :)
-
Friends are friends no matter where they are, if anyone's stuck they can come over to my place
Sandwich if you want to come over here yourself you'll have to leave the rifle at home (they're kinda edgy about trained gun toters over here ;) )
...and yeah I'd have Setekh 'round at my house any day of the week, the rest of the staff too  (no swearing in front of my mum Griff! :D )
-
I think that would be a hella kewl thing to meet some of you in person  and if you came to my house, you could sleep in my room because I sleep at my computer ;) (or rather don't sleep).
-

Do you ever see a Merkava(Tank) go past or down your street?
-
Hmm, well, since I really have never thought of this before...
I suppose that if they gave a decent heads-up alert (I'm talking about a month or so), and they had a perfectly legitimate reason other than just stopping by to visit, then maybe...
Of course, I have precious little space at home, so they may be confined to the dog house or garage :D

Actually, I don't sleep with a gun under my pillow. I keep it in my nightstand drawer, which is right under the rifle on the shelf just next to my bed...:p I'm joking!! Well, sorta... ;)
-
Yeah indeed hella cool:) i would let anyone in from HLP if they need a place to sleep..And the good thing is i got enough money to tour around englend and visit most of you guys:) and party:D
I'll bring ,u own booze:D

Silly me, forgot to log off from Shrike's account...

Not a Merkava - they usually keep those tanks for the real hot areas. I've seen plenty other tanks roll past on trailers, though - Israeli-modified Chieftains, IIRC. Tanks aren't allowed to drive on roads, as they tear up the asphalt. Only the M113 APC can, because it weighs a lot less than a tank, and it has special rubber pads on its treads for driving on roads.
-
Hehe...never had anyone from online before stay around.
But i got a nice 8 bedroom house for next year all lined up. :D
In terms of friendship..
Im not a hard person to get on with, but previously before i came to Uni i was with the "wrong people", so not surprisingly i wound up being closer to many people online that i could possibly be IRL.
Its not a problem for me now but I still find it far easier to "just get on" with people online.
-
Would I let any of you guys stay at my house? Absolutely! Unless you arrived with a machine gun over your shoulder...but then maybe I'd just move my pocket knife from across the room to under my pillow :D
But what would my parents do to me if I tried something like that?
:snipe::snipe::snipe:
;)
Oh well, that's life! I could hook you up with a good Holiday Inn though...:D

actually, if I could, I would :)
Life's boring down there, and gunfires can't be more noisy than the area where I live :D

Yeah i know, they make mincemeat of it. Are the rubber pads a varient of the standard M113 design?

They may be; they're afixed to each track section individually. Look here:

I'm on the left, FYI. I've circled the treads with rubber pads; you can see the rubber as the big central flat section in each track section.

Back in the good old U.S. of A. *WOOHOO!!*
anyone live in texas? The only restriction to visiting me: no firearms of any kind, and no messing with my girlfriend :D thats all. If you wanna stop by, give me a couple weeks worth of heads up, less if its an emergency.
-
I would except my parents would be really confused...
-
confused? My parents would:
- Shoot me :snipe:
- Dismember me :headz:
- Kill me :mad2:
- Delete all evidence that I ever lived because I let a "stranger" in the house :devilidea
- and promptly kick out the HLPer who was staying over (if somehow I got you into the house) :(
So sorry but I really couldn't even though it would be really cool to actually meet one of you guys.
-
I'm of two minds about this one.
On the one hand, I met my wife online, ten years ago. We finally got married two years ago.
On the other hand, over the years, I've grown to dislike dealing with people in person. I don't like people showing up at my door unannounced. I don't like people showing up at my door at all, come to think of it. I recently had a dinner party for my family. That was very difficult for me to deal with. I much prefer to deal with people at a distance, with a phone or a network between them and I.
Yeah. I'm f----d in the head. I know.
-
well...I guess so...but you better not hog my ps2, or my l33t computer! :D I'd only allow certain people...and if Steak came, I'd lock him up in my basement and force him to make renders for me for the rest of pitiful life! :drevil:
-
When out with someone over the net...so been there done that :D
But my parents would say no so i'll just give you a few hundred dollars and you can say at one of our exclusive hotels in Perth..just give me a few days in advance. :D

Mik, you're not alone. I find it a lot easier to deal with people online; even moreso over email than instant messaging, when I know I don't have someone over the other side of the connection impatiently waiting...
But I think meeting with someone can provide really good fellowship, and is crucial to us as social creatures. A lot of communication is lost when you can't see someone, hear the tone of the voice, or whatever. I like meeting up with people. :)
PS. I voted yes, naturally. Thanks to all those who'd welcome me. C'mon, who wouldn't, if you heard 'The Steak is here!' hollering from your front door? :D

I really got into the whole online friends thing a year ago, up until a few months ago. I've calmed down since then, and I really value and even crave spending time with people in RL™ - especially, uhm... certain people. :D
-
Lol! :D Well, if I ever smell Pita Pizza waffing into my bedroom - look out the window and see a cool guy hopping out of a M113, then I'll go and unlock the doors. ;)
PS. Shrike? I'll be waiting for you and Barni to turn up too... :D

hey, dude, not before wedding ;)
Online is cool, but real life is cool too. Of course, 'm kindda lucky, i'm the sort of lonely guy that stays in the corner of the room when there's a party, usually, but 3 years ago, I got to met, well, you know, you meet one guy and you know you'll be firnedf for a long, long time... well, I got to met 3 guys and 1 girl of that kind :D we're still all together, even if now I'm away in another corner of france :). I have 4 best friends . And if I met them only online, life wouldn't have been half as fun as it is now.

Friends can be few and far between here - people come and go so much that for the past 13 years since I've moved here, there are 4 people my age whom I've known for that whole time - count it (on one hand, too) - four. :doubt: So you can imagine how much I value the friendships I can make over here. :)

heh, speaking of accents. I think many find Finnish accent quite amusing, hell even WE find our accent amusing :p

Unfortunatley there are too many of you great people online for me to give you all the attention you deserve. In RL my friends are the most excellent bunch of people that I've ever met. I hope you all have friends that are as kind, loyal and funny as mine.
Everyone should be happy

My mom and her fiancee met each other online, and we're all living happily together. :) I haven't been here long, but I feel like I've known you guys forever. New Jersey, Texas, Ireland, Israel, Capella...

Comanche, its a stealth Apache. Radar emissions, sound etc is kept to a low. The deal with it? It costs a fortune and there's probably a ton of things wrong with it.
AH-64 is your tank eating machine, the apache and the other one is the Chinook(twin rotor transport helo). Both are Army Air Core vehicles, Chinook possible Navel as well. Could end up flying either.

You seem very agreeable with me tonight ;)

I'd probably be willing, but Max is about the only one who could ever get here, and I don't know him. Even Setekh and CougEr are about 4000k away.

I wouldn't mind to meet any of you....I think it would be great ! and fun. to party my as$ off:D

Yes it was. First came Apache, then they designed and built the Comanche. The evolution is there, its a tank killer, the step up from the Apache. When i say based i dont they literally used the Apache frame or design, they looked at the Apache and decided to make something with the same purpose, but better and stealth.

huh, ah.
when you say that something is based on something else, it's built from the same frame of design, otherwise I can say the B2 is based on the B17 :p
Be more clear next time ;)
Oh, and first did not came the apache but the Cobra, but never mind :p
-
Considering the Apache is an attack chopper and the Comanche is a light attack/recon chopper with a significantly reduced ordnance load, I'd hesitate to say the Commanche is really a successor to the Apache.

No it was the Lynx. Commanche is similar to the Apache in my view. Might just be the name though.

The Lynx? originaly it's an anti submarine helicopter if i don't talk crap (plus it's much more recent than the cobra, that first appeared in Vietnam), anyway Shrike is right, the comanche is a scout btw.
bah, anyway, i don't care, the Werewolf rules them all

Well considering its a AH-1, it came out before the Apache, also the Lynx used to(still does possibly) serve as the BAF's anti-tank helo, still i'd rather be in a A-10 sometimes, ZSU-23's are nasty or Shilka's if you dont understand Military Jargon. Jets are safer than Helo's but i cant get in the RAF. Also i know the comanche is a scoutish craft, but if the Apache hadnt been developed, it wouldnt have either.

the apache wouldn't have been developed, the US army would have had cheyennes instead :)

Yep. The Comanche is a stealthy, faster machine with paper-thin armour; the Apache is built like a brick with separated engines, decent armour, higher weapons capacity and features like the always-down landing gear (handy for emergency auto-rotation). MmmmmApache. :D
PS2... PS2... grr, I hate you guys. ;)

too bad the apache usually flies only a dozen of meters above the ground, and would never have time to make autorotation :D
I guess it's strong enouth to resist, but the crew would be severly reeling under the shock :p

Yeah, I suppose so. :D Still man, the Apache... the 30mm chaingun and the Hellfires... deadly combo. :D

yeah, but now there's quite a lot of helicopyters of the same level, but less known for some readon (the Roylvalk (not the right spelling, that's for sure :p), the Havoc, the Werewolf, the Gerfaut ( ground assault variant of the tigre, the one you can see in GoldenEye ). The apache is the most mediatised, but not the only one :p

it wouldnt matter if i posted my address because i could "disappear" easily.
not that anyone would get within two kilometers of the house without being beaten senseless by pikey kids in kappa suits and baseball caps..
-
so Styxx knows Shrike in RL eh? no wonder he's an admin!
(just kidding :D)
i'd let someone stay at my place, but they must make the arrangement in advance... if they just show up at my house then i'll say forget you, you can stay in the dog-kennel at the back of the house... or on the street, or in the ditch.
it also depends who it is

Yes. Someone voted in the poll, which bumps the thread up.

I'd tell everyone my address, just so I could trap whoever came in my basement and slowly drive them insane with my twisted mind games and traps, but feh, I just finished with a couple of Jehova's Witnesses and I'm kinda sick of the screaming now. Maybe next week.

...never mind that I'd have to let the defenses down to let someone in, or at least the razor wire, and I'm not interested in having those National Guard bastards on my doorstep again. Last time, I actually had to reload before the survivors ran off last time, and I HATE reloading.

Hmm, I sorta did that to Shrike, but I had no effort at all - all I had to do was, well, do nothing! Yes! The wonders of not knowing the language of everyone else around you...
In fact, it was bad timing. When we arranged for it, I had lots of free time, but when he arrived, I had just gotten into a new, huge project and everything was screwed up. :p

Back in '88 (1988 for you youngins) I was on Fantasia BBS (noted for the Tradewars2002 game!!!!) We decided to have a "BBS Meet" at the Crystal mall in Waterford Connecticut (back then I was 15mins away!)... about 20 of us showed up and I met someone I had talked to a lot. She was called BUNNY. It was Love/Lust at first site... We got along just fine until my parents freaked out that she was a freshman (14) and I was a senior (17)... We went out a few weeks but then had to call it off... I never did really get over not knowing if it would've gone somewhere....... :(
*Runs to tissues*
Unless you are cute or bear gifts appropriate to my greatness you can pack sand all the way to the budget motel :p But sure come on by sometime
