Title: Now you can have Voice Commands for FreeSpace 2 :) (links updated)
Post by: hip63 on May 15, 2008, 10:52:41 pm
I ran across this nifty abandonware called Game Commander 2 that allow you to issue voice commands in games and I've put together a profile for FreeSpace 2 that works really well.

I can now literally say "Alpha Two, Attack My Target" and Alpha Two will respond and go attack whatever I have designated. If I need to to rearm, I just say "rearm" and the shuttle is on it's way. :)

And you know when you get the rapid tone that says "hey buddy, you're about to get a missile up your tailpipe"? Well now, when I hear it, I just do like Iron Man and say "Flares!" as I torque on the flight controls, SWEET! :pimp:

I can also issue voice commands for targeting like, "target hostile," "target bomber" or "next bomber" and  other commands like "boost engines" and instantly the energy to my engines is increased. I also use them for shield management too.

So here's the link to the software:

http://rapidshare.com/files/115225329/GC2VCS.zip
less than 5mb

and here's the link to the the FreeSpace 2 profile I created:

http://rapidshare.com/files/115225427/GameCommander2ProfileForFreeSpace2installer.exe
less than 1mb

here's a mediafire mirror links:

software:
http://www.mediafire.com/?lkgtj4btijx

profile:
http://www.mediafire.com/?qmlm0njxoj4

Note it should work for all FS2 based games like the Babylon Project and Beyond the Redline.

enjoy!

Heh, that's pretty cool.  But I don't want to buy a headset or tape my microphone to my head.  :P

I don't think it is that abandoned...

Ummm. Couldn't you do this already? That's what the voice recognition stuff is meant to do.

I thought that was (for now) just for managing the command menu. Mapping controls like countermeasures or energy management to voice triggers is an interesting possibility.

You could also map custom wingman commands in addition to the seemingly hard-coded (?) ones in current voice system, for example "taking heavy damage" or "HALP! HALP!" to activate c-2-1-8. Or whatever. Hilarity ensues with creative commands... at least for a while. :p

Also, the cool factor of being able to say "Computer, engage subspace drive" should not be underestimated. :drevil:

Of course, if a customizable interface for voice commands were possible to implement in FS2_Open, I don't think it would be impossible to adjust the current voice system to do the job, as "all" it already seems to do is feed key command macros to the game based on voice input.

Yeah sure, I noticed that link, but you can't by the liscence because there is no one to by the license from - http://www.gamecommander.com/ doesn't exist anymore and the brothersoft download link is dead (links to CG.com), so yeah it's abandoned.

And yes, I do have a command for "Enage Jump"

I don't know why but I had not noticed the voice regcognition setting before but how customizable is it? The GC2 you can completely customize the verbal command and keystrokes, hell, you can even program it (with voice sampling) to understand Vasudan commands if you wish. :) not to mention and add voice commands to ANY game you wish.

Hehe I remember this, I used to test Robotech mod from across the room... (really lazy still in bed).
Last tiem I posted about GC (forgot if it was 1 or 2) we debated 2-3 others on the market at the time..

I was a tad bit sceptic about the usefulness of the whole voice command thing, but that line changed my mind.

Oh, the possibilities... "Shields up!" (diverting more or all the power to shields).

OK, here's a screenshot of most (not all of the commands I have programmed into the FS2 profile I created

Other than firing and piloting the ship, I voice command just about everything else :)

"Boost Shields"
"Alpha Wing, Destroy Target"
<oh crap!> "FLARES!"

Hey Getter, I guy said  in that post that with voice commands and HOTAS, he would be in heaven. Well I have a HOTAS :pimp: and yeah, FS Heaven baby!

Hehe...

I bet I still have the install disk somewhere, but I think my voice days are over.

I've got GC2 as well, but the only problem is is that it's like Vista's voice recognition. If you have too many commands, even the most carefully pronounced command will get you something different.

I'm not having that problem with FS2, if you notice in the example above, I try to keep the commands short and distinct.

This does save me the trouble of making one myself, though I really only wanted to do wingmen commands. Never did it since some campaigns have you in Beta wing or something and it would be kind of silly calling Beta 1 "Alpha 1" or something.

Trying to download, but Rapidshare keeps telling me that I have the wrong codes. :blah:

You too? I got the FS2 profile on my first try but I keep F@#King up on the installer it's self. I thought that I was just retarded and couldn't see the damn kitty cat, but maybe it's something else that is screwing up.

Since Rapidshare is doing the retarded visual thing, I looked for the sitting cat, but I only found three.

[EDIT] I thought so. When I try to say Alpha Three it thinks I'm saying Alpha wing. Time to train the profile.

You could also edit "Alpha Wing" to "Alpha Flight" I was in the Air Force and "Flight" is what a small group of 2 to 4 aircraft are referred to as and the term "Wing" usually referres to a large formation of aircraft or even an entire base of aircraft. So you wouldn't be breaking any military rules by using flight ;)

Also feel to delete any unwanted commands, it's as easy as right click

Can you map several voice commands to one keystroke? That way I have some leeway in what I say in-mission?

EDIT: This could be used with great effect in a capital ship mission. Somehow linking a beam free + target a certain ship with "main batteries; open fire!" would be pretty nice...

"Concentrate all fire on the SC Lilith!"

It is possible, I could whip up a profile for that if you want. :)

Though it wouldn't be "All fighters attack SC Lilith" >.>

voice can be a little complicated in targeting if you have multiple enemies. they aren't listed by a number or name.

A single enemy in a mission is easy but for multiple you should target it (y)

When I got a certain one (a Lilith) in my reticle I haven't targeted yet:

"Target (y)", "Comm (c)", "all"l (all fighters), "Kill"(Destroy my target)...  IIRC

Things in missions change so for some things you DON'T want all in one commands.

All-in-ones should basicly be for something you actively have targeted already, from the ship/command list so it's pretty straightforward. (though I never tried those).

I don't have the Freespace 2 option, when selecting Profiles. Is there a 'browse' option?

EDIT: Note to self, read front page thoroughly.
