Title: Help a Noob!
Post by: Saint Jimmy on May 25, 2008, 09:53:46 am
Hi i've been playing FS2 for years now but have only recently gotten into FRED, i have a very very important mission in the campaign m making but something has gone terribly wrong, i have essentially made an event where an Arcadia installation warps in (story significant in my campaign) this is a new experimental rebel installation, you scan it etc. and then it turns hostile and you realise, holy jesus on a stick its gonna kill us all, so two small cruisers are dispatched, this is where the problems start, the cruisers are meant to follow two waypoints to the installation, open fire, be promptley owned by the installations bfgreens (thats kinda important) and then a hectade jumps in and assists you in bombing the hell out of it... now the problems start with the two small cruisers... they dont fire beams, neither does the installation, beams are all set to free and they have attack orders etc. im just not sure what to do im a big n00b at this so if anyone could take a look at the mission i would be eternally grateful... however i dont know where to host any files,

sorry for my wall and n00bishness

Welcome to the HLPBB!!! :D

No problem, all questions are welcome. I'd like to know something else about your mission - can you please check if the ships mentioned above have the beam-protect flag activated. :)

One more question...are you using FSO with FRED 2 Open? ;)

EDIT: One sec, when do you activate the beams? Does that happen after the arrival of the ship whose beams you want to activate?

to be quite honest i've been tweaking and tuning this so much i don't know whats what, it is FS2 open and FRED open and the beam protect flag isn't on... i've hosted it at: http://www.mediafire.com/?yettncbbq1x

if you could have a look, but im getting to the point with this that i want to severely kick something...

edit: and thanks for the warm welcolm

edit 2: and all beams should be on from the start, the mjolnir turrets fire fine...

I'd better re-formulate my question. ;)

If you free the beams of a ship when it's not in the game that ship won't fire its beam upon its arrival. The Mjolnir turrets fire fine certainly because you activate them when the Mjolnirs are ingame. The formula is simple:

when

has-arrived-delay
<ship>

beam-free-all
<ship>

:)

What do you mean by "in sexp"?

Anything on the ships table can warp in or out via the arrival/departure cue. Engine subsystems are not required.

If you free the beams of a ship when it's not in the game that ship won't fire its beam upon its arrival.

Yep, that's exactly the problem here. The Beam-free-all SEXP has a trigger of true and therefore triggers before any of the ships are in the mission.

Since you're using FS2_Open for the mission you should simply delete that event and go to the Mission Specs Editor and choose "All ships Beam Free" as that will have the desired effect much more easily.

Well what do you expecting from someone who solved a brain-shattering problem thanks to the help of two forumites? For the record, I "love" many members of the community...

You know, if I were an admin you'd already be on a 3 month ban for being that impertinent.

But now we see why I'm not an admin.

wouldn't the all ships beam freed by default in the mission specs work? or are you using retail? (if you are switch. in you don't have SCp or 7Zip, everyone turns into zombies and menaces you until you switch. believe me. i'm a victim)

Correct. If you check the All ships beam-freed by default box in the Mission Specs editor (assuming you have FRED2_open), then you don't need to beam-free any ship within the events editor, regardless of when the ship arrives. However, if the ship is at any point beam-locked, you'll natrually need to use the beam-free SEXP to unlock the turrets, even if the said box is checked. :)

And everyone else: Verbalize your specific affection for forumites elsewhere. It's fine thanking people, but it's disturbing once you excede that point, which I can emperically deduce that some people have done and others have incorrectly recognized such statements. :p

As he said before, he's using FSO and FRED Open.

Switching to FSO isn't always possible, many forumites agree on that.
