Of course, this doesn't have to do anything with FS or anything else we talk about here but I just want to say that Kazaa contains SPYWARE. I hope that you all know what this is.
I recommend that you download AD-AWARE which can be found here: http://download.cnet.com/downloads/0-10106-100-7302674.html?tag=st.dl.10000-103-1.lst-7-1.7302674 (http://)
It is a shame that developers added these programs to a such popular application. Please spread the word as much as you can.
I appologize for posting this if some of you knew about it allready, but those of you who don't please take this seriously.
Thank you for your attention.
PS also see user reviewes here: http://download.cnet.com/downloads/0-1896420-601-7142396.html?pn=1&lb=2&ob=0&tag=st.dl.1896420.top.7142396-1
Thunder, why don't you post something about this in HLP's news or INFO section.
-
I'm soo glad this wasn't another 'They can access your C drive' thread.
Everything contains spy-ware nowadays. I for one couldn't give a rats ass. I don't have anything on my comp that anyone would bother prosecuting me for or is vitally confidential. And who cares if they know how big your hard-drive is or what programs you run? It just means they can make a little cash from providing you with a nice free means of obtaining totally legal back-ups of your audio and program files. This sort of anti-KaZaA crap is whipped up by little rejects thinking the problem is bigger than it is. All they're doing is some marketing research and they screwed up some code. Big frelling deal.
An example:
Someone was implying that this extract from the TOS was granting them free run of your computer.
4. Upgrades and Access....... (b) You hereby grant BDE the right to access and use the unused computing power and storage space on your computer/s and/or internet access or bandwidth for the aggregation of content and use in distributed computing. The user acknowledges and authorizes this use without the right of compensation. Notwithstanding the above, in the event usage of your computer is initiated by a party other than you, BDE will grant you the ability to deny access
All this means is that you let their servers take and share files (the whole point of KaZaA) and that if any cracker gets in they've made an uninstall option available to remove the crackers way in.
-
Um... better point a few things out :)
Firstly - I've known about Kazaas spyware for some time now, however you can minimise it by not selecting any of the optional programs during the install progress.
Secondly - I found that running ADAware and removing what it finds from Kazaa makes Kazaa non-functional. That might just be me though...
I've had no problems using Kazaa (the latest version) as long as you take steps to minimise the effects it shouldn't be to bad.
Oh, and if this degrades into a warez thread I'll lock it. K? :)
-
Ok
Have it your way. You may lock this or you may not it is your choice. I just wanted to warn everybody arround because I am a good guy and wanted to mention this.
Kazaa team never mentioned in their T&C that the program has spyware. :mad2: :mad2:
-

Is that permission I hear...err...see?
Anyway:
I think the warez thing was directed mainly at me. Or am I just being overly self-important?
-
Why won't the government shut it down?
-
I notice the link to the reviews takes you to an 'Only Negative' page. Hmmmm.
Besides, without KaZaA I wouldn't have the alternate ending to T2. The one where it shows you 30 years in the future where the war was averted and eveything continued merrily and John pushes his kid on the swing. I swear to god, it's real.
-
Is that permission I hear...err...see?
No no, at this stage its a useful thread and spyware is a part of the internet and so on, it should be talked about from time to time.
I think the warez thing was directed mainly at me. Or am I just being overly self-important?
Kinda, better safe than sorry - and your not the only one... just the most obvious one. Dont think I'm singling you out :)
-
Hey guys, no need to miss out on having the best of both worlds: Kazaa, Morpheus and Grokster all share files with each other, all work on the same network, and all have the same networking engine. I started out with Kazaa, but when I discovered it had spyware I moved to Morpheus - one of their "selling" points is that it has no spyware. :)
Get morpheus at http://www.musiccity.com
-
correcto, i am running Morpheus, while it does slow down opperating speed to just over 200mhz, thats from the transfers going back and forth.
-
Well, thanks Thunder for supporting this topic
I just wanted to warn as much people as possible.
And I don't think that the government ( if you meen USA government) would shut it down. They don't care about that programe (of course I could be wrong).
Is there anything we can do about this? I meen, if we spread the word alot, those guys who made Kazaa would probably notice the lack of people who use the pragrame. I allready have all the MP3s i need so I don't need that crud anymore.
-
No problem with the topic support :)
I'm fairly sure there's something in the small print saying they can do what they like regarding spyware. Basically you put up with its small breach of your rights and download files or you don't use the software...

actually, I think most users are just like me: they don't care.

Yay, go Morpheus! :) I've downloaded about 7GB through that in the past month. ;)

I think they've fixed it now but one of the Spyware programs that installed with KaZaA is a virus and actually installs whether you tell it to or not.
What I consistently fail to understand is why people even bother using KaZaA or Grokster (and circumventing the spyware in the process) when Morpheus doesn't install spyware at all...
-
hey there people I am back
I had some problems logging on network. That piece of *the s word( of Win ME had some errors on it so i installed Win 98 First edition. It may be old but it is much better than ME.
So about that virus
Here are some things I found out about it:
1. You can not scan it while you are doing file transfer with Kazaa.
2. The crud cpoies itself somewhere in Windows and when you are done with file transfer, you can't find it again in the shared folder
3. It activates every 26. of the month
I don't know anything more but that is just another reason why we should avoid Kazaa. I hate that piece of s**t so much :mad2: :mad2: :mad2: I think that we should do something about well, at least I can do here right now is to :bump: this thread.
Oh and just to express how angry I am at Kazaa and @ssh'les who made it, :snipe: Have a nice day
-
hey, why isn't the BUMP smiley working?

Its not that difficult to make an OS better than WinME and easier still one thats better than 98 (http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/default.asp)

well, the reason is coz it's the first one I heard about, and now, my d/l list is never empty, so I can't bother deleting it, replacing it and searching for stuff I couldn't find for days again.
-
thank you for your recommendations admral, but I have a
45 MHz
128 MB ram
so I don't have good enough resorces to install Win XP
EDIT: It is actually 450 MHz

wow, 45 mhz? :D
hehe, after all, my first PC was a 33, so why not?
Joke apart, on my parents PC ( a 750, 128 MBr), XP pro is already damn slow so on a 450 I don't even dare to imagine...

Yeah Kazaa doesnt run when you shut it the spyware off. Im downloading Morpheus right now :)
-
No I am sorry   :o It is actaually 450 MHz. Crud if it was 45 I couldn't possibly run FS2. Imagine a fighter going at a speed of 1 mm per second....
Well anyway, I made a mistake, but who cares, it is good to have a good laugh from time to time.
Anyway, I couldn't run WIN XP anyway
-
Yeah send Kazaa to hell along with those who made it.
Just imagine, how could they be such: jerks, morons, idiots... Hey think of something else will ya?
Hey I got it! :D Let's flame them!! No wait, this is't VBB. Oh well kinda like the idea anyway :D

You're in luck, dude. I was running Kazaa months ago, and I tried out Morpheus. When I loaded up Morpheus, I saw it listed _all_ the downloads I had queued (sp?! Dang that looks funny!) up from Kazaa. They really are essentially the same program, just one doesn't use spyware.
When you download a file from someone, you'll see that the majority of users are something@Kazaa or something@MusicCity. Those ones with Kazaa are sharing files via Kazaa, and those with MusicCity are running Morpheus - both are completely interchangeable. :)

The only way for them to shut it down is to goto everyone's house and check their computers for it. See, it uses peer to peer instead of client/server like Napster. They couldn't shut it down, even if they tried. It would cost too much money and isn't worth the trouble.

Hey, my system isn't much better (Pentium II 400 [@496], 128Mb RAM) and I run XP just fine, even with all the eye candy turned on and with a higher level of performance than Win2k gave me (which is what I find most surprising).

They could send a kill signal out across the Kazaa network thus d/c ing everyone and do this constantly. But I think that's classed as hacking and wouldn't be allowed, like when the CIA were being hacked and they fought back they got in big trouble.
-
i don't know if the Kazaa team has any rights to hack (sending spyware is hacking) on other PCs. They say somewhere in their (the f word) list of rights that we will have to agree to accept every program that comes along with Kazaa. This does not include spyware or even viruses which are both harmfull. For example, do you think that it would be ok if for instance Volition or Intercrap placed a virus or a trojan or spyware in FS1 or FS2? I know they didn't do it of course but the Kazaa team has no right to place harmfull programs in their application. They should know the rules for that kind of game. :mad2:
However, as I said before we should spread the word. Tell your friends and as much people as possible about this. I always say, good things travel far, but bad travel further. All of my friends know allready about this Kazzcrud and they are spreading the word.
Unfortunately, the only possible way for the USA government to find about this is if they download Kazaa and find out what harm it brings. Than, they should put an end to this. I hope.
However, maybe throgh this thread we will be able to inform people here. Why not? We can bump this anyway. We are good with that aren't we? Well the choice is yours.
Well I gotta go now
Later

Actually, that would be classed as a Denial of Service attack. :) We all know thats illegal as hell and lets just say they'd be called hypocrites for doing that and then punishing people that did it in the past. :p

Don't the RIAA want laws put in place that make that sort of stuff legal for them?

Ah? You know that? Who ever checked FS2 to see if there was not a spy prog in it? :p

I did! :p And there aren't any spyware, nor trojans nor viruses. :p So just relax people and enjoy playing Freespace ;) Yeah, like you don't?
Freepsace is the second most important thing in my life. Well sometimes, the first most important thing. :D :D :D ;) ;) ;)

Yup, and they got turned down HARD. :D
What I find funny is that the FBI has Carnivore up and running, yet its illegal as hell.

Neat, isn't it? Makes you wonder why anyone would use Kazaa at all....
-
well im not buying anything from any entertainment company.
F**k 'em all i say, because im not paying my money so they can go and strangle my right to what I want.
The govornment is trying to shut this stuff down...but at the end of the day i thought a govornment was there to speak the will of the people?
THIS IS THE GODDAMN WILL OF THE PEOPLE.
This particular issue, among others, makes me so angry i sometimes want to cry.
**edit**
The languange filters dont appear to be working yet, sorry.
-
Unfortunately, there's a lot going wrong in the world today, a lot of bad stuff coming from the governments. I'm particularly upset with what's happened with the Tampa, the refugees who came to Australia for help, the asylum seekers our Prime Minister turned away... and there's a whole string of bad things coming from that. Really, it just gets worse the higher you get up. But it makes you wonder.. what exactly are these heads of state going through? :(
Isn't it strange... how before, I had no power, and all the choices I could ever want... and now, I have all the power I could ever want... but no choice... no choice at all...
-
Well I don't know much about the USA government but this is deffinetly a chaos what those @ss****s who made Kazaa are doing. From now on I am never gonna download any programme of that kind such as Kazaa. I allready deleted it from my backup CDs my hard drive. I don't want to have any ugly memories.
Oh and BTW, I was infected by the Love Letter f******g virus :mad2: :mad2: :mad2: :mad2: (sorry for that word) thanks to Kazaa, but with help of my Norton Anti-Virus I was able to clean it off of my PC. Well I hade to make sacrifices.
-
Luckily, I had never heard of Kazaa before I downloaded Morpheus. I first noticed the name from the @KaZaA user names, and I didn't know about the built-in spyware...
Anyways, I've never had much performance hit from using Morpy, but that may also come from having a sucky connection and only grabbing the occasional file or two.
Also, since I bought XP Saturday, I find that it requires at least a 266 Mhz processor, preferably something over 300 mhz, 64 mb of RAM at least, 128 mb _highly_ recommended, and the overall performance boost has been incredible. Example: On 98 and 2k, FS2 was little more than a slideshow in 1024x768, 32-bit color. Now, 32-bit color actually runs faster than 16-bit!! Not much, but it is phenomenally faster than the same conditions under 98 :)
But as for anyone that would intentionally try to plant spyware, or find some legal means of remotely controlling my computer: :headz:
-
hahahha
all so funny...
Companies and Agencies don't target individual users for illegal programs, though they rather target people supplying and hacking into these progz. Whether you know or not each person's computer is protected under the privacy act, which in simpleton terms means if a company hacks into your computer and finds illegal progz they can't take you to court because they have just violated an act which they can be prosecuted and be dismantled (the company that is)...
On other matters I knew Kazaa before I got Morpheus though I always used the online search and never layed my fingers on kazaa d/l prog..
about virus...no1 dodo never use outlook, always something like excite, or yahoo or something equivalent which scans for virus before hand...
-

Actually, Outlook is reasonably safe if you diable the preview pane. Even more secure if you are able to disable HTML and Javascript in your e-mail. I don't use outlook (and never will) so I don't know if you can disable HTML and javascript. I know for damn sure you can do it in Mozilla (and Netscape).
