hello,
i did get FSopen installed and working and i have to say its quite impressive. i've love to take a crack at many of the various mods out there soon, but for now i've got a real itch for the original FS campaign. problem is i never got the videos working...and i always thought those were nearly essential myself:p
anyhow, i tried some installer but it never worked. as it stands now the game runs on my system with briefings, the small videos in the briefings, but none of the full screen movies. i know that all the problem is is that FSopen is running everything off the hard drive - but the videos are not there. i'm just unsure where to put them or if any config files need be changed.
i'm sure this is a simple one for some of you, and any help would be appreciated. i took a look through the stickies and didnt see any mention of this. thanks for any help.

The cutscenes (.mve or .ogg) go to \freespace\data\movies. The cutscenes will only work with OpenGL. Direct3D is not supported.

crap i meant FS2....sorry, i feel like a tool now. i assume its similar anyhow...

How exactly did you get hold of the game? There are several different methods and some of them have pitfalls.
-
Aye. The HotU download (or at least the newer one) is good. It works but doesn't contain the cutscenes. Others might be a bit tricky. In any case, once you've briefed us on how you installed FS2, I'd advise you to switch to FSO. This can be done easily with Turey's FSO Installer, or manually if you so wish. There are many reasons to play FSO instead of retail FS2, one of which is the ability to use ogg cutscenes that are virtually as high quality as the original mves, but that take a lot less disk space.

ok i'm a total dumbass, i got it. i actually have an original GOTY copy but i'm running off burned cds - want to preserve my originals:)
yeah so i'm a tool. i'm used to the game asking for cds when it needs them for the cutscenes....FSopen doesn't do that lol. wow i feel like an ass. i think i'll dump the contents of all 3 cds onto a dvd now....save me some hassle.
sorry guys i'm such a tool sometimes lol. thanks for the help though. maybe i'll try a few mods next. and i LOVE fsopen!! runs so well!

First of all, run the FreeSpace Open Installer located in my signature. Run it in your FS2 directory. Before you do, copy the .MVE files on your discs (in data\movies) to \<freespace folder>\data\movies. Uncheck the options to download the FS2 cutscenes int the installer, and run it. Voila. Once you do, run launcher.EXE.

What he said. The FSO engine, and also the original FS2 engine, can check the \freespace\data\ folder for any extra content. So, if you have the .mve cutscenes in \freespace\data\movies, they will be read from there. No need for any disks whatsoever.
Later on, you might want to acquire a set of MediaVPs, if you haven't already. Also, the FSPort is highly advisable since it allows you to play the FS1 campaign with the FS2/FSO engine, and with all the graphical glory that is the MediaVPs. Handy.
Oh, and do try any mods you can find. They are surprisingly entertaining.

And well polished. I suggest The Second Great War Part II. It's an outstanding example of the pinnacle of human ingenuity.
or not...

thanks again for all the help, you guys are great:) i usually play FS and FS2 at least once a year and i got both when i was still pretty young around the time they came out. i think i went through FS2 the first time in a matter of 2 or 3 days - i couldnt put the damn thing down!!
so i think i got it solved now. last night i copied all 3 cds onto one dvd so all i have to do is toss that in the drive and forget about it. seems to work rather well, i forgot how this game never really had much in the way of copy protection. kind of nice to be able to do what i please with the game i bought :p the videos work just great but for some reason sit at the bottom of my screen...ah well if thats all i have to complain about then i'm doing quite well.
oh and its WONDERFUL to have the better texture packs AND be running at 1920x1200 on my 24" lcd :D this FSopen is a real work of art!! i think i'll go through FS1 next, just gotta remember where i put my old copy....
i'll definitely give some mods a try, i want to try that second great war pt.2 you mentioned - sounds good. thanks again!

Nope, you don't have to remember where your CDs are. FSPort is a port of FS1 with the improved graphics.
