Okay so i installed fso on my computer and it proceeded to not work - fine then i stripped it down to freespace retail and voila it works but ther is no breifing/ debrifing voices and worse yet no in game radio chatter. this is really screwing me over so if someone could help please do. thanks
-
Post the file names of all the *.VP files in your root FreeSpace2 directory. Or a screenshot. My suspicion is that you are missing stu_fs2.VP (either have accidentally deleted it or misplaced it somewhere else, or something)... also, have you checked from the F2 in-game settings menu that there is some volume in Voice? :nervous:
-
Thanks Herra, i guess the volume would have been an intelligent thing to check BEFORE posting. unfortunately i can't do either recommended thing until my gaming computer works again on friday. but thanks for the help.
-
Also, we can probably help you get FSOpen running fine.
-
And reccomend mods, plus the order in which you should play. :X
-
Also, under the Speech tab in the Launcher, make sure that all the options are unticked. Nobody likes Microsoft Sam.
-
If music is also missing I'd look at OpenAL as the cause of this. Otherwise missing/corrupt stu_fs2.vp is the likely cause.
-
Or something other than General Software has been selected under the Audio tab on the launcher, but then he's talking about retail, not FSO! :p
-
You can't run FS2 without installing Open AL. But you could try re-installing it if the vps are all jake.
-
You can't run FS2 without installing Open AL.
Actually, you can. You can't run FSO without OpenAL.

Actually you're both incorrect to a degree.
First tinfoil said that he stripped down an FSO install to retail and still had the problem. Now unless we are certain he's actually running the FS2.exe we can't be certain he didn't mean he selected No Mods and deleted the media VPs folder. He probably did it the correct way but it's always best not to assume. I've seen far too many newbies get it wrong to go down that path. :)
As for installing OpenAL, if you have a dodgy version it is possible to run the game and have it fail to do certain things. Again, best to never assume that just cause FSO runs that OpenAL is installed correctly. Not unless you've seen the debug log and it quite clearly states it found OpenAL 1.1.
You are correct about retail of course. It never needed OpenAL.
-

Does that mean we are also right to a certain degree? :)
-
Of course. :) You're probably correct. I just didn't want it ignored that you might not be. :)
-
When I used the fso installer it said the sound files were not includedand i could get them somewhere. As usual i forgot where the somewhere was. i think this may be the problem. then again it could just be me. or my POS computer.
-

:wtf: Does it do that? It probably said that you must install OpenAL. If you've managed to start FSO up without any "Cannot find openal32.dll" error reports, you must have OpenAL installed. But I guess there is a chance that it is an old version. In that case, uninstall it, then reinstall using the installer available in my signature. If that fails, follow these instructions (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,48621.0.html) and again uninstall/reinstall OpenAL.

Actually i didn't technically strip it down i just reinstalled it but only checked retail core in the install thingy. i also got a new launcher because the included one crapped out on me. would this mean i need to get openAL?
-
Make sure you have Launcher 5.5d (in my sig).
OpenAL is also there.
-
Screw It :mad2: I've gotten fso and put it at gunpoint, forcing it to work :hopping:
i have now officially given up on freespace 2 retail - mods kick ass
By the way got music working with launcher 5.5 but no voice so as i said SCREW IT
-
Actually, my bet is now that you have a corrupt stu_fs2.vp
If you run the debug 3.6.10 build FSO installs and then post the fs2_open.log you'll then find in your data folder I can confirm that in seconds and show you how to fix it.
-
You must make update!
-
I just knew it was a mistake explaining to you what my title was all about. :p
-
You most make an update
Fixed.
Ah, funny chap. Sort of. Well, annoying to some extent as well. I wonder if he ever got his FSO working.
-
*reports kara*
tinfoil, run a 3.6.10 debug .EXE, and post the FSO_log.txt in \FreeSpace2\data.
-
*reports kara*
Quiet, you.
-
But he most release an update. Unidentified problem of the spacefree make my sadness.
-
One useful info would be fs2_open.log file.
To generate one do following... Start launcher, select debug version of the build with which you encounter problems (debug build is the build marked with additional 'debug', 'd', 'db' or something similar). Start the game (or try to start the game). Quit the game after you get to main hall. Go to <your FreeSpace directory>/data and find the 'fs2_open.log' file. Copy its contents here - preferably using 'code' tags, the '#' thing when you are posting a reply.
Now be quiet. Seriously. I may not have the button yet, but I do have a button.

This is kinda related to whats going on. . . I guess:nervous: but i'll ask anyway. I'm running vista 32bit. And i've got anna as the only voice i can find installed. I can't seem to find any others for vista through the launches link. Just .msm files which are completely alien to me. .. ..
-
Anna is better than any of the other SAPI voices the launcher will try to install. Stick with her.
As for running the debug build I suggested running the 3.6.10 one as it will generate checksums for all the VPs it encounters. Which means comparing the log against mine will instantly point out if the file is corrupt.

I told you ive given up this thread will either be deleted left to rot or turned into a top 10 reasons why i hate disco
-
 We're trying to help, it'd take 10 minutes and we can get it to work.
-

You may have given up but we haven't. So shut up, sit down and do as we say and you'll get the FS2 campaign working again.
As a side note, threads won't be deleted unless they are nothing but senseless spamming (such as Viagra advertisements).
-
Quite unnessicery (i'm sure i spelled that wrong) the main fs2 campaign is working just fine in fso - well exept for the goddamn escort the iceni mission but that is the subject of many other threads. so i truly appriciate your input but i have no reason to continue trying to fix somthing i no longer use. it's nothing personal - i simply don't need it
-
Fine.

Or me masquerading as 47 odd people on AFD. All with different game preferences.
-
Sigh... That too (http://koti.mbnet.fi/reiler/FunkyFreeSpaceStuff/colelol.jpg).
Now let's try to stay on topic, plz. kthxbye.
-
Did you ever get this to work?
-
not in fs retail but it's fine in fso
-
Which basically means that you no longer suffer from the issue.
-
EXACTLY - thank you Lobo :)
