Hello, I've known about HLP for a few years but never created an account till now.
Now that that's out of the way, here's my question:
I want to have some "fun" with the main FS2 campaign by making it so I can access and use certain weapons from the first mission on. I've looked at many FAQs and searched all over the forums for a specific answer but I haven't been able to come up with anything.
I've extracted the .fs2 files from mv_models.vp and have gone in and edited the team loadouts. However, even after editing that info I can't get the custom settings to work on the SCP version of the retail campaign (nor for the plain retail).
I saw info in one thread that lead me to believe I might have to create an .fc2 file, but then I thought "well maybe the game already has one", but I can't find one to edit.
So, is there any way to go about editing the campaign loadouts in the way I want?
Example: If I wanted to be able to use the UD-8 Kayser on the first mission, "Surrender, Belisarius!".

You need to allow them in the campaign (.fc2) file as well. It's in the same place the .fs2 files where and goes in your data\missions folder as well.

But I didn't see a .fc2 file anywhere in the vp. Would I have to create my own?

Why exactly?
Either way, allow me to officially say,
:welcomeblue:
Enjoy (the rest of) your stay!

Try root_fs2.vp in your main fs2 folder.

OK thanks, I managed to find the file in there. Should I store it with all the missions in my mediavps folder or in the main freespace2/data/missions folder?
Also, when I tried to save the file with the changes it gave me errors saying the last branch on the missions that initiate loops weren't set "true". I think I remedied this by switching the order of them, so I'm gonna go test this some more.

I'd stick it with the missions and rename it and any missions you modify in case you want to play the originals. Whatever is in the missions directory will override the ones in the vp if they have the same name.

OK, thanks for the help. I finally figured out what I had to do. I had to add an event in the first mission to unlock the weapon and ship that I wanted. NOW I can test that and see if it works.
Also, I have everything backed up, and if I really had to I could just re-download the game again (or I could find the box where I have my retail disks stored).

Actually what you probably needed to do was edit the initial ships and weapons list in the FRED campaign editor.
i.e extract the campaign file, load it in edit the allowed weapons and save it again.

Interesting Discussion.
I´m doing some similar Stuff and try to make the Retail Campaign working with my .tbls.
@Draconyite, could you exactly explain what you did ? I get crashes in Retail Campaign everytime I try to play it with my Mod.
So if I just save the Retail Campaign in Fred with my modified .tbls it should work ? Really, i tried everything and nothings worked out so far.

You know you could just use cheat codes to change your weapons....

Well, initially I tried what karajarma suggested but to no avail (the .fc2 file seemed to be uppity). The other steps depend on whether you're playing using retail or the hi-detail version using mediavps.
The .tbl files that you extract from root_fs2.vp should always go in your freespace2's data/table folder (mine is C:\Games\FreeSpace2\data\tables). Any modifications you make to those should work. I've done extensive table editing in the past so I get to have lots of fun with them. I may make my own beams sometime and mount them on fighters, ehehehe.
Anyways, the fc2 file you should stick in data\Missions. Now, if you're using the hi detail models, put the fc2 file in mediavps\data\Missions. I learned from lurking karajarma's posts in another thread that if you play hi-def. it reverses folder tree priority when searching for custom files to use. So this means that if you're playing just plain 'ol Freespace 2 you should probably put the .fc2 file in your freespace2\data\Missions folder instead (since folder priority will be normalized).

I would use cheats but I'm a Java programmer so it was more exciting for me to use the event tree structure to do what I wanted, rather than just type in one code. Also, I don't believe the codes allow you to give those same ill-gained weapons to your squad mates *big grin*.

4 Lokis armed with Helios, and BFRed ... Damn. That's like my $1 Ion Cannon Scout.
