Here's my effort so far, based on the Gunstar model in the game by Rogue Synapse. I couldn't use any of the DirectX model directly due to LithUnwrap "converting" it so that every single face became a subobject. (That's like shattering a sculpture with pieces meant to come apart, then gluing it back together in a solid mass.)
The original is gunstar3.cob My redo is gunstarX.cob The side stripes are from the game, and not all movie-correct. I just used them to have a temporary splash of color. (That's one thing that'd be easy to fix up for the game, just a simple texture swap.)
I'm having a horrible time figuring out what to do with the middle area with pilot cockpit between the core body and the nose. Anyone want to take a stab at it? The orientation of the model is wrong for Freespace, though that's correctable after the model is finished. I just left it the way it loaded into tS.

Here it is, as done as it's going to get. Looks close enough to me, I'll leave it to others to texture the beast.

Thank you. :)
I see you dug up one of the same pics I used for a guide. What I didn't find were screencaps from the movie. Guess I should dig up a DVD of it from somewhere.
I left the landing legs off for the game version. I doubt they were anywhere near right. There's some more maneuvering thrusters that could be added and some other fiddly bits, but it's already quite high on the poly count, could be optimized some by joining various bits.
What'd really be cool is if the people who did the original CGI would release their models and textures.
Now I'm working on a revised version that'd be more fighting friendly and less movie optimized. ;) The movie Gunstar was designed for maximum visibility (from the outside looking in) of Lance Guest while poor Grig (the pilot) was crammed in the rear seat with crap for visibility.
Now we just need SCP to have 2-player co-op on one ship so one person can fly while the other runs the weaponry. I'd love to fly a ship with a real human tailgunner taking care of my six.

you mean like Star Wars Battlefront II? You leave from Starfighter Command (ISD) and jump intoa Gunstar and the first person in is pilot (fly and weaps) and second navigator (mostly weps)?
I hated being no2, damn people don't know how to fly. There are times I wanted to dogfight and times I just wanted to get over to the other ship. You never knew what your pilot was going to choose so sometimes you had to bail...

It's the same with any game, unless he's your buddy and in the same room sorta thing. I played Battlefield 1942 and some people just use the airplane to get someplace quickly and then bail out. Sometimes it takes me a few seconds to realize that there's no one flying the plane anymore and then I had to take over.
People just piss around and do their own thing.

There is no Gunstar in BF2. Unless... No, nothing that looks like that.^^

Cole re-read the last two sentences of Bizzy's post, that's what I was responding to (Akala and Bizzy seemed to get it) ;)

Oh.

/me not-so-quietly notifies this thread

If someone textures the 'finished' version, or does more work on it, I'd like to see it posted. :)
Now, how soon till the complete Starfighter mission is ready to play? ;) The other ships are in .3ds so they shouldn't be a big problem to directly convert, though some don't load properly in trueSpace. For example the Xurian fighter loads with its parts displaced in odd directions.
The other ships need detailified too.

That looks like the ship from the last starfighter...

Ah. So it is that ship...
