Title: How do I stop myself from getting Mononucleosis?
Post by: Turambar on June 02, 2008, 11:45:34 am
OK guys,  me and this girl did about everything possible to transmit a disease between two people short of sharing a needle.

yesterday she started running a fever, and today she went to a doctor who told her she had mono. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Infectious_mononucleosis)

how do i make sure that i do not get mono?

High five! Good on ye. Hope you had fun.

I think you're screwed, though. Just ride it out, hope your antibodies are strong.

You sure she did not get it from you? You may not be symptomatic.

Find an equally strong virus and get that one, too, to keep mono at bay.*

* You really, really don't want to actually do this. Just in case anyone even possibly thought of taking that seriously.

Actually, according to The Simpsons a highly respected and reliable medical resource, one must develop the so-called Three Stooges Syndrome, in which every single disease, virus, bacteria and so on is contained within one's body. That way, all of them will be crammed and none can actually cause any harm.

No, you shouldn't take this one seriously, either.

We're not exactly helping here.

I heard that if you obtained and consumed milk thistle extract, then jumped around the room, you'll feel better.

...  Sorry. Couldn't resist.

Get lots of rest, listen to your libido less.

according to the wikipedia, you have it for 1-2 weeks before you develop symptoms.  I hadn't done anyone (new) in 1-2 weeks before i did her, and she developed symptoms 2 days after our first encounter.

High five! Good on ye. Hope you had fun.

oh yeah.  totally worth it.  amazing body on that one.

Get lots of rest, listen to your libido less.

dude.  I'm 20.

So am I.

In any case, you just have to take care of yourself. Have lots of rest. Take a one week mc. Milk it for all its worth.

Once you've been exposed to a virus there is no way to stop its progression other than to hope like hell your immune system repels it.  Though, as you saw, most diseases are asymptomatic during the initial stages of infection.  Actually, symptoms of disease are usually the result of your body's attempts to fight it off... and begin occurring between 3 and 10 days after first exposure.

In short, you might want to go visit a doc and have them run a blood test.  Mono is a funky disease that can have asymptomatic carriers.

Go to a sexual health clinic and DO WHATEVER THEY TELL YOU. I've never heard of mono outside of US sitcoms is it a stateside only epidemic?
Also funnily enough i had a call last week from an old female encounter during my months of "screw death i'm off out to get laid and drunk©" claiming i'm gonna be a dad but the numbers don't add up so i'm gonna have a "calm chat" and tell her to stop harassing me.

Seconded.  I had severe problems with fatigue a long time ago.  My doctor thought I had mono, and she ordered a blood test too.  Test came back negative.

Well not much you can really do...I speak from some experience (and around the same age too!).  There are a few possibilities....one is that you've already had mono and you won't get any symptoms.  Mono is actually very common and in third world countries most people tend to get it at an early age.  At that age its like a minor cold and you get over it.  When you're older the symptoms last much longer.  And yeah its called the kissing disease for a pretty good reason! :)

Its also possible that you won't feel the affects full on or you'll never know you have it or it may just be like a week long flu and then it'll be all better.  OR...its going to kick your ass and you're going to feel weak and flu like for a few weeks and feel moments of weakness for months after that.  Thats more or less what happened to me...it kicked my ass for a few weeks and then I started to feel more or less better but for 6 months after that I would have points where I had to sit down and take a bit of a breather.

Fortunately its one of those things that most people get at one point or another and you'll just have to bear it out.  In a few weeks you'll know :)

1.  Mono isn't really an STD so much as a disease that can be transmitted sexually.  Sexual health clinic isn't necessary.
2.  Mononucleiosis is a common disease among teenagers and young adults, transmitted mainly through shared food/drink and oral fluids (hence, the "kissing disease").  It's not confined to any one country.  It's often misdiagnosed though.

I think the main question is "Is she hot?"

If the answer is yes, then don't worry about the subject anymore.

Dekker...I wouldn't worry about it.  Its extremely common...in third world nations where hygiene isn't as good as it typically is in some of the more developed nations most of the population has had mono at a very early age (where the symptoms are apparently indistinguishable from a mild flu).  Of the people posting in this thread...probably 50% or more have been exposed.  Some probably don't even know.

Oh yeah....one more thing..

There are tests for it you know. Just go the doctor, get tested, and if the results are positive do everything they tell you to do.

from wikipedia:

Fatalities from mononucleosis are near impossible in developed nations

You're not screwed, just go to the bloody doctors.

its not that bad, and once you get it you don't get it again, though it seems to hit women harder.  it only made me tired for a few days, and my back/neck was a little sore

I think I had mono when I was 16, cause I made out with a girl and then was extremely tired for quite a long time. It's not really a big thing unless your in sports, are about to join the military, or have to walk long distances a lot.

Yeah, come to think of it, this isn't exactly a self-help thread, either. It's more like "Help! I was having SO MUCH sex that I decided to come to you guys, a bunch of internet message board nerds, to complain about this sickness that I _might_ or _might not_ have, from having sex with this chick, who happens to be hot. Rather than talk about this illness - that I got from having sex - with a qualified medical professional or some other individual with expertise. Not that I regret it, because the chick I was having SO MUCH SEX with was so hot.

PS: She had a great body.

PPS: Did I mention that I got this illness (which I might or might not have) from having sex?"

Well, it's a good thing we're keeping this mature and insightful, otherwise I might lapse into childish bragging that i've been in the exact same boat for just over a week now. But, of course, it's not that sort of thread, so I won't mention it. I'll just keep grinning.

Yep.

Of course, there are people online who are getting married.

But it's more fun and more stereotypical to pretend like the internet isn't as progressive as it is today. A form of nostalgia for the simple times, I guess.

Mwahahahaa! I was also unaware of this disease, or at least then it must be called something else here, to think I wouldn't know about this is too much to fathom! I'm 26 and first time hearing about this... Makes you think, doesn't it? But my immune system has usually been quite reliable.

At the first glance I thought the topic was about woman getting pregnant. Reading through the pages with this thought gave me quite good laughs at posts... Besides for my defence, mononucleosis sounds like a geek term for combined combining genes - for me at least.

I sense a nasty case of The*****twotimedmeitus, I know the symptoms well. I'll save you the platitudes and just say the thing about time is...it takes time.

Just be careful you don't end up in a relationship for four years with a girl you didn't even particularly want to go out with in the first place (which is, best summed into a single sentence, what I ended up doing), always trust those first impressions ;)

Ohhhhh. . . . .
Wait a sec my little brothers 16 in september and he had glandular fever last year. I think i need to have the "big brother chat" and lay down some rules and regulations.
1-don't get caught
2-always take her number and never give yours out
3-in line with 2 always dial out with 141 or 144 (whichever hides your number from call ID)
4-always learn her name.
5-remember birthdays (assuming you'll be around that long) unannounced presents earn brownie points.
6-use your best judgement

As with many viral infections, such as chicken pox, antibodies are developed by individuals who become infected with the disease and recover. In most individuals, these antibodies remain in their system, creating lifelong immunity to further infections

So, find a doctor?

Anyway, a girl in my class (don't start thinking weird things. I am not a romancable character) has the Pfeiffer's disease as well. As she is doeing fine now (in the first year, she did not appear at school all that often...), I wouldn't worry.
