Title: Mod Recovery drive
Post by: Titan on June 02, 2008, 11:49:28 am
Ok, i've noticed that theres a ton of neet mods packed away in little, obscure campaigns and such.

Why don't we go through all the campaigns we can find, go through them, and salvage anything worth keeping?

TOTAL ITEMS RECOVERED: 0

Basically, build a shared database with every ship and weapon that's ever been completed and tested 100% working ?

How about just uploading them to freespacemods.net? If everyone uploads all the mods they have to freespacemods.net (obviously not if they're already up), then we'll have a massive database of quite a few ships.

Whoever controls it will have to make sure everything uploaded IS in fact 100% working. Most of the files I keep FS2 related are model dumps and wip's and such for future reference and brainstorming.

I agree with you. In theory. In theory, communism works. In theory.

Ah sorta like Democracy...  :P

Besides Communisim does work (insects), it's all the damn HUMANS that F-it up!

As for Orwell, he wrote the animals from a HUMANOCENTRIC viewpoint so I disregard that the same failing we have would apply to them.

My favorite form of government is mostly fuedal with a bit of democracy, communisim, and overall a benevolent tyranny (My character was Lord Mayor). It worked for me! :)

[Sorry for the tangent]

i just mean, anything that works (including model dumps, who knows, one model might be used, or even just inspire someone. it's worth it) and isn't crappy (REALLY, REALLY old stuff should not be included) should be uploaded.

and making a huge database would be nice, provided we don't crash the server.

I'd go with anarcism. Back in high school(?) there was this anarcist dude giving a speech at our school under some election. He had a good point on drugs. Certain substances, like Mary Jane, should be legalized for a few reasons. First of all, if there are legitimate dealers, criminal organisations cannot benefit about the business anymore, which is of course a good thing. Also, if there are legitimate business establishments selling these products, it means that they'll pay taxes and that will benefit the entire nation. Right?

Sorry, I almost ruined this thread.

Knock yourself out, kid. Organize the whole thing and, most importantly, find a place for the stuff. If you were thinking of FreeSpaceMods, wouldn't it basically mean that people continue to upload stuff there when they have the time or they remember to do so.

I wouldn't limit this operation to FSmods and upload "recovered stuff" to every FS related site (http://www.sectorgame.com/f2s/ for example).

so if FSmods fails, we don't lose it all again?

ok, i'm gonna add a thing to the first post, with a total number of mods, and the names of the mods uploaded. so lemme know when you upload stuff.

If you're going to upload this stuff to FSmods, please check it before you upload it.  Considering I'm the sole administrator (which may change soon) I don't really have time to go through all of it.

Like BT said, don't limit to freespacemods.net alone.  Hell, keep copies on your hard drives if you have the space.

Yea. If (not saying that it will, but you never know) FSmods' server crashes, at least we'll have back ups.

When you said BT, swantz, my first reaction was, BT, the band. Then I realized you meant Tiger.

ok...

remember, just don't limit this to ships. anything, even, say, interface art or cbanims.

If people want to be helpful in other ways they can also download everything on FSMods and store it on their hard drives as backup. Not everyone will do this, but I know some people just need absolutely everything. Or throw it on a DVD, put it aside, that sort of thing. I imagine there's a lot of stuff which has been lost to time already.

Well, I looked back in the CIC archives, and there were a few WC FS mods (not Saga BTW) that were floating around, including a WC1 mod and a mod that included ships from all WC eras.  They are not available for download anymore...

On a scale of 1 to 10, with 10 being hate and 1 being minor dislike, how much do you hate your parents?

(this SEXP doesn't work well with negative values)
