Depends. If they're .ogg or .mve, place them to \freespace2\data\movies. If they're in a .vp, place them to \freespace2\. If they're .avi, politely give them to a group of stray dogs so that they can eat the files in the most savage manner possible.

Play. In. Open. GL. Direct3D is pure evilage.

Installer. Check the ".OGG Cutscene Pack".

Or FreeSpaceMods (http://www.freespacemods.net/download.php?view.128). Go with the ogg. There is hardly any difference qualitywise compared to mve, but the oggs take this much less disk space *spreads hands really wide*.

I DID check the box in the installer  but it said the files were out of date and didn't install them like all of the other out of date files so i'll just get them from said site. i was under the imprssion that the avi's would work but apperently not
thanks for the help

AVI used to be supported, but was dropped.

What other files did it say were out of date?

All the vp's and most of the campaign files including for the added campaigns

Avi cutscenes should work in 3.6.9 actually. If they aren't working it's likely tinfoil's running in D3D instead of OpenGL. They won't work at all in the 3.6.10 build though.

I have this feeling that I couldn't get them to work with anything. Not 3.6.9, not 3.6.10, not OpenGL, not Direct3D... though I guess I could be wrong.

Running in D3D (Yeah Yeah I know - it's evil) but i'll try OGL and see what happens

Therein lies your problems. You're missing most of FS2. Or did it say that the ones you had were out of date?
