Hey everyone, new here but not to Freespace. I play this game all the time and found this website. I would love to re-play the main missions with these updated graphics but I'm having an issue installing. I've used the installer that requires an internet connection and everything installed ok, I have the launcher 5.5c and I've selected opengl and then chose what visual options I wanted. 3.6.9 worked great but I hear good things about 3.6.10 so I downloaded all the files(I think) that I'm supposed to have. I deleted all the mv files in my mediavps folder, and then transfered the 3.6.10 mv files back into it. I started the 5.5c launcher and I have the same settings as 3.6.9? I think I missed a step somewhere. Some help would be great, or a link to an article that explains exactly how to upgrade from 3.6.9-3.6.10. Glad someone is upgrading this game by the way.

You say it worked fine until you put in the 3.6.10 ones?
Maybe you need to delete the cache files or something. Try going to c:games/FreeSpace2/mediavps/data/cache and delete all the stuff in there.
But if that doesn`t work, tell us a bit more about the nature of your problem.

Ok, here it is: I haven't deleted all the files in the cache directory yet, but I just finished the training missions in FS1. I downloaded a build from this site that has the 3.6.10 .exe files and I went into the launcher config file and told it to open the 3.6.10 .exe instead of the 3.6.9 that it was opening. Don't get me wrong, this game looks amazing but I still think it's using the 3.6.9 update. Is there a way to tell exactly which scp the program is using?

Some other issues I noticed. I don't see the fancy engine lighting I've seen in some screenshots on this site,(maybe they are from the fs2 missions??) I also noticed during the training that some of the AI fighters would not respond to my commands that I issued. They would just spin, or fly around for no reason. Seems like the game isn't "in-sync" so to speak.

Oh, so your problem isn`t related to crashing or things like that.
I`ve never used the 3.6.10 VPs, so I can`t tell you much about what visual differences there are between it and 3.6.9. However, you should be aware that the 3.6.10 release is a BETA release. It`s more to be tested than played normally. If you want stable gameplay, stick with the 3.6.9 releases until 3.6.10 officially comes out.

What you need is a 3.6.10 EXE.
Do you have one of those? You'll need to select it as your current .exe in the launcher.
You can get them from the 'Recent Builds' forum. I'd suggest searching for 'Taylor's XT build' and taking the most recent one that pops up.

He got the .EXE. What .EXE do you have?
Cindarh, do the Sathanas's beams have a glow around the fire point? If they do, you are using 3.6.9.
Run a 3.6.10 debug build, and post the FS2_open.log. You can find it in \FreeSpace2\data.

To be honest I haven't gotten that far in the campaign(to answer the beams question) I have a 3.6.10 .exe and I have since reverted back to the 3.6.9 setup until the afore mentioned update becomes mainstream. I still like the graphics in the 3.6.9 update, I just finished the mission where you have to escort the bastion through the asteroid field and I had some anomolies in the asteroids themselves, such as: some portions of the rocks are missing, or, dissapear for a short time. Other than that...so far everything seems to be working ok. If someone does have a viable method to use the 3.6.10 I would like to know how, but, as I said..things are good for now. Thank you everyone for the information, very impressed with the quick responses on this forum.

Hrm. Are you sure it was one of Taylor's EXEs? I was using a different one and the MediaVPs didn't work for me, but Taylor's did.

Okee-dokee. Let's see if I understood this correctly. You have the 3.6.10 Beta MediaVPs? K. To fully utilize their potential, you'll need a 3.6.10 build. Preferrably one of Taylor's XT builds, which support normal maps. You might want to see the thread about getting the most out of FSO graphicswise (link in my signature).
You said that you have the same "settings". If you've selected a 3.6.10 build (.exe) with the Launcher, that is correct. The same options are present: Enable specular, Enable glowmaps and so on. There are a few differences. With 3.6.10, there is no "Enable jpg/tga textures", because that option is always required and is enabled by default on 3.6.10 builds. Also, 3.6.10 has an option that 3.6.9 hasn't: Enable normal maps. It needs to be ticked on to take advantage of normal maps. Adding -height to the custom flags field also helps. In addition, you'll need a shader, such as sdr1119 (http://icculus.org/~taylor/fso/misc/sdr1119.rar) (extract the vp to your \mediavps\ folder).
Hmm. What else? Oh, some people have reported missing engine glows with the 3.6.10 MediaVPs. Well, they are still beta. The final release should fix it.

You also need to delete the data in the FreeSpace2/Data/cache folder to flush the cache properly ;)

And \mediavps\data\cache.
Could you screenshot your FS2 folder?
