I just bought a Western Digital 320 gb SATA hard drive, installed and partitioned it, seems to work just fine as a second data drive.
Now I want another Windows installation on one of the partitions... and I'm running into all kinds of problems. Going through XP setup in Windows and rebooting into Setup, gives me a HDD not found error. Booting from the Windows CD gives me a BSOD with 0x7B error, same thing-- it's not detecting the hard drives at all.
Now I know there's no fault with the hardware since I can boot into my previous install on my old drive, and access the new drive just fine. It seems though that somewhere in the boot order, it's not loading the drives.
What's going on? How do I fix it?

Is your second drive configured properly? Can the BIOS see it?

is the xp cd pre service pack by any chance ?
you probably need to install a sata driver (when it says press f6 to install a 3rd party raid driver)

If it's not the pre-service pack CD then the next thing I would look into is drivers for the controller that need to be loaded for windows to see the drive. It's that press f6 message at the beginning of windows setup.
If it is a pre-service pack cd you can make it into a SP2 cd if you have a working install. http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase/windowsxp_sp2_slipstream.asp#ez5

Awesome, the Dell controller drivers did the trick. And I'm really glad I found nLite, too. Now I can slipstream Service Pack 3 and video drivers straight into the installation! Thanks so much guys.
