Title: Choosing MOD Ingame
Post by: tinfoil on June 14, 2008, 05:07:52 pm
Is it possible to do so and if it is why can't i do it yet?

1) Not yet

2) Because no one has made it work yet.  I remember someone on the senior SCP staff mentioning that integrating the launcher with the game should be done at some point, but it just hasn't been done yet.  That kind of stuff takes planning and collaboration.

not even in the options menu or something? it doesn't seem that difficult.

Go ahead and code it then

So why did you state that it doesn't seem that difficult?

This would probably actually take a lot more code than you'd think.  The game currently runs on the fact that all of the mod-specific stuff, eg. tables parsing etc, will be done when the game starts.  In order for this to work, you'd have to figure out how to get it to reload all of the media files without breaking anything (trickier than it sounds).

It's blindingly obvious why he said it.  From the perspective of a non-coder, it would appear that the feature would not be difficult to implement for coders to implement, when one looks at their achievements to date..

Anyone who's visited the SCP forums should know that the coder's biggest pet peeve is people who have no clue how to code telling them that something should be easy to implement.  So while it may be obvious why he said it, the response is equally obvious.

tinfoil did not actually say it was easy, his tone may have suggested it however.

Indeed. It does sort of imply that coding the feature was easy. I suppose there are some things that would be easy to code (as in, having one of the Launcher's tabs have the word "Tits" instead of "MOD"), but implementing actual changes to the game engine does take work.

Forget picking MODs in game anyway, what I'd want is a way for me to know which pilot goes with which campaign (other than naming them something obvious) so that when I pick the wrong pilot I don't end up having to abort the campaign because it's not found.

It shouldn't be that difficult to exit the game, go to the launcher and select a mod. Thats what I think, personally.

By the way, is this feature in the list of the upcoming SCP releases?

I didn't say it was easy - said it wasn't that difficult. anyone who knows me would tell you that when i say that i mean it's possible. and i will not answer to any "well we don't know you posts"

As the link above says, there is no mention of such request. From ths point on, only devs have the power.

I think the majority of people would agree that "not that difficult" pretty much means "easy". So, if you wanted to say "possible", why did you not say "possible"?

because i said that it wasn't difficult instead

Are you still going to say that, even after we've reached the agreement that it is actually difficult? At least difficult as in, a pain in the arse to do.

that would depend on your definition of difficult. as i already pointed out mine is damn near impossible.

So damn near impossible is "not difficult"?

no damn near impossible is difficult.

no damn near impossible is difficult.

So...you're saying that choosing mod in-game is not difficult then? because you think its not damn neari mpossible?
I don't get your drift.

Some people really need to learn to stop digging when they find themselves in a hole.
