I upgraded it a while ago but I forgot how, I have 3.6.9 and a slow computer, so I don't want any way too fancy effects that my computer can't run, but my current build crashes when I try a lot of custom campaigns, so I want a newer one, which one should I choose and how do I install it? Please help me here

Just get a trunk build from somewhere in the recent builds forum. They are stable and don't have any fancy features like normal maps.
-
Basically, get a trustworthy 3.6.10 build, place the .exe files to your \freespace\ folder and point the Launcher at the non-debug one.
-
Hey, how do I specify the 3.6.10 stuff via SubVersion checkout? THe branch I got compiles with 3_6_9 in the file names?
-
If you've checked out the latest version from SVN it's simply that no one has gotten around to changing the file name in the project file.
-
Yeah, I was starting to suspect that when I noticed the -jpg/tga checkbox was missing. BTW, is there a way to make the project use compile date in the filename as a build number?
-
Whenever I download a new build and attempt to select it in the launcher, it says "Fatal error: failed to read flag file"
-
What version of the launcher are you using?
-
5.2
-
That's pretty old. Check recent builds (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,52691.0.html) for a newer one.

I got it to work by downloading that OpenAL thing, but now whenever there are particle effects (like for flak guns or when a ship is destroyed), all of the particles are inside black squares and it looks really weird.

Are you running in D3D mode instead of openGL? Check your launcher's Video Tab. You should be in OpenGL.
