I've recently been forced to reformat my computer and reinstall FreeSpace, this time using Turey's installer. I've downloaded the .exe for OpenAL, ran it, and attempted running FreeSpace, but it's a pseudo-no-go. I get a little notification telling me that I should install OpenAL, though I've already done this. FreeSpace will run, but there's no sound.
If I remember correctly, the issue is tied in with nVidia sound cards, which I have. Unfortunately, I can't remember the proper fix for this. All the searches I've done thus far have pulled up contradicting tips.
Problem solved. See second post.

Has to do with nvidia specific and Creative labs specific OAL dlls, IIRC, but I don't recall what you have to do to clear it up.

Ah, I have found the solution, and it's quite stupid. Though I deleted the nvopenal.dll and used the OpenAL installer, the problem continued to persist. However, a few people out there have neglected to mention deleting the OpenAL32.dll before using the installer again. Problem resolved.

Yeah. This would actually qualify as a Support issue. And there is a stickied thread about dealing with OpenAL issues on the Support board.
