Title: Freespace Carrier Landing?
Post by: Sushi on March 12, 2001, 07:56:00 pm
I've been out of town and won't have access to a computer with FRED for a day or so, but I recently had an idea- what about ending missions without jumping out? Every once in a while you play a scramble mission where you are launched off of an Arcadia-and at the end, you jump away. What about making it so FS gives the illusion of returning to the fighter bay? Here's an idea for how- remember, I would have tested this if I could, but I can't yet.  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

Simplest case:
1. Create a single waypoint just inside the fighterbay of, say, an Arcadia.
2. Create a SEXP tree where if all mission goals are true and player is within 100 units of the waypoint you end the campaign.

So, Player finishes mission, gets ordered back to base, flies towards fighter bay, and mission ends just in front of the entrance. Simple.

Potential problems:
1. If you use End Campaign, does the game skip past any debriefing you have?

Any thoughts? As soon as I get a chance, I'm testing this.  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)

I love the idea. Hope fully it can be implemented. Good luck, Sushi!  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

Bad news...it probably won't work.  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/tongue.gif)

When you use the End-campaign function, it ends it fine, but wants to go to the ending movie on CD2-even prompts for the CD. So that doesn't work.

Option number two, using the Red-Alert function, doesn't seem to work either. You fly on in, it says "downloading new orders," then ends the mission without a debriefing.

Oh well...it seemed like a good idea at the time. Gimme the source code and I'll make it work!  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

Really? Damn. So you can't simply tell it to go to debriefing?  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/redface.gif) Oh well.  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

Nope... rather annoying cause in one of my missions I made, I wanted it to end on a subspace cataclysm that catapults you to an alternate dimension- que whiteout and catapult to debriefing. Unfortunatly, I can do neither.

Damn. Damn! The only way to end a mission is to jump out or get new orders for a RA mission. That's crappy.

disable the warp efect, and break warp untill there close to the fighterbay, then say something like press alt J to enable the auto-docking system.

We could use the special warp ani and make it... black.   (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

Oh, and we'd have to figure out a way to get around the 'cannot jump out - collision imminent' thingy.  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

Hehe...I've jumped out into fighterbays for fun before. It CAN be done, you just have to get the distance exactly right. I suppose if you could get the player to line up EXACTLY right, you could do the breakwarp/fixwarp thing...

Is there a warp-animation POF? If so, I have a couple of ideas- especially for finally fixing my little Velocity Mod problem.

If all else fails, I repeat: Gimme the bloody source code.

Yes, IIRC, it is named Warphole01.pof or something similar - browse the sparky_fs2.vp to find it. It is in there. I can't wait to see what you have in mind.  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

Hehe...good. All I need now is an effective way to edit POFs...Now to get my old 3DS R3 working at find a way to convert pof to cob to 3ds and back.  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

What I had in mind originally won't work, but don't worry, I'm getting all sorts of crazy ideas...  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/tongue.gif)

Crazy ideas are A-1 Supar  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)

BTW, if you'd like me to do the conversions for you, I can - however, the textures won't be applied. I can get you the warphole in 3ds without fail, though.  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif) If you'd like to do it yourself, run the model through Pof2Cob ("http://freespace.volitionwatch/pof2cob/"), then pick up 3D Exploration from XDSoft ("http://www.xdsoft.com") and use that to convert from cob -> 3ds.  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

hehe I can help you on this for I'm making my ships thanx to 3ds3 (and max for the mapping stuff). First go there and download truespace http://pcplus.co.uk/downloadslist.asp?pageno=7 ("http://pcplus.co.uk/downloadslist.asp?pageno=7")

it's free and completly legal, so enjoy  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

Then once yov've finished all your work with 3ds3, just open the 3ds file with TS, it can  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)
But you can't save from cob to 3ds... you'll have to save as .dxf ( well goodbye maps  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/frown.gif) ) or as .asc , I think this one can be used by 3ds3.

That's where, fortunately, you're wrong - 3D Exploration can convert from 3DS straight to Cob, which can be converted directly to pof - neat huh?  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

Yep, this way my thing works too  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif), it's the other way you have to use asc first (as I'm using 3ds3 all the time, I don't really need a new prog)

Where can I get my hands on 3D Exploration? Is it free or annoyingly expensie like the truespace series?

The trial lasts 30 days (you can get it from XDSoft ("http://www.xdsoft.com[/url"), the link is in the toolbar). I eventually bought it, because it is such a good program.

It seems that Volition is determined to block me at every turn.

It turns out that Yes, FS HAS a warphole model, but it doesn't use it. I think it actually just uses a D3D primitive, but whatever the case, the model in the VP files is not used, and therefore changing it doesn't do anything. It's far more complicated than the model used-more like a raindrop hitting instead of what amounts to a cone in FS.

Oh well...

Oh yeah, I can't make invisible debris either. Anyone know how to make a transparent ANI?

Oh sucks dude - damn about the warp hole. Wonder why it's in the VP. Let's go ask V, then.

As for the anis - just make it green (rgb 0, 255, 0) or black. That should make it transparent.

It's still difficult to get the distance right.

You also have to add a
"dont collide invisible" tag as there is an invisible texture that stops you entering the bay.

ok, we have a carrier landing thingy that works on our robotech mod. If you want to know how it's done, ask Damien Weiss on our forum  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

Damien is Hella l33t. He was the one who figured out how to do transforming Veritechs. Amazing guy  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)
