Hmmn, I just bought the UFO: Trilogy . . . sort of a, more recent sequel of sorts to Xcom. It's not in space persay, but it does have aliens. And the third game's on Mars. I also have homeworld and Starcraft on my computer, neither of which I've yet to finish. I'll finish them one day. (SC:BW that is).

HomePlanet: Playing With Fire

X3 and Freelancer. Used to play Homeworld 2, but got fed up with its dislike of multiple cores.

I've been intending to play Tachyon: The Fringe ever since I found out it was on GameTap, since I rather enjoyed the demo, but I haven't gotten around to it yet.  I might give whichever one of His PhD-ness's games is on there a shot too, just to see if they holds up to their near-mythic status. :p

I've been playing past four days Sins of a Solar Empire. It's a decent game for an RTS. I really dislike the lack of depth though. It has three races but they play almost exactly the same and their ships are nearly identical save looks and special abilities. The game has managed to keep me entertained for a while. Not worth the full price tag though, but get it if you find it from a bargain bin.

- Nexus: The Jupiter Incident
Oh man, this game is golden. It's almost sad how overlooked this game has been. I love it to bits and played through it several times. Unfortunately it seems like there is almost zero change for it to receive a sequel due to poor sales. :( I wish there were more games like this, besides of Homeworld series.

Here is a tech demo by Nexus devs of what Nexus 2 would have been like: http://sargoth.spymac.com/space_techdemo_HD.rar

HomePlanet
HomePlanet: Playing With Fire
How is HomePlanet, is it any good?

To be honest, I didn't enjoy it that much, it's extremely unforgiving, which is ok if you like that kind of thing, but I just found that it was too close to the line to be fun.

Yeah...there are hardly any Real-time strategy games which are space themed. I was so happy the HW wasn't the only one.

By the way, any of you play games of Derek Smart?

I found it very good actually. And that I'm playing the semi-english version makes it better.

DO NOT MENTION HIS GAMES ! I had a nightmare involving a mono-textured DeathStar which is a quarter of a monotextured planet, 10-15 stars in the background, and the whole HLP in that deathstar... And everything was in HIS games. Battlecruiser Millenium I think...

That's because FreeSpace and all it's mods spoiled the people here, so they can't keep up with something as challenging as HomePlanet. :P

When the english patch is released, then you'll all be more interested I think.

I still fire up Rouge Squadron every once and a while! And there are numerous Sci-Fi FPS's I still play with, most set in space or a spacehip/station/planet! Have played X:Beyond the Frontier, keep meaning to get into X2 but FSOpen keeps distracting me! :P

Nexus: The Jupiter Incident.....now I have wanted to have a go of that since I saw that techdemo of Nexus2, pity it will never be released!

If seriously, what would need to be done to make Derek Smart's games... good ? ( sorry, but having words 'good' and 'Derek Smart' in the same sentence sounds weird ).

Also, does anyone know any good mods for Hegemonia ?

AND, if anyone's interested in trying HomePlanet FULL game with it's expansion too, contact starlord.

After searching in google for Hegemonia and Homeplanet....I found out I am the worst gamer in the world.

Take a look at 3000AD werbsite. It looks more like a fansite rather than an official website.

How to improve it? Well, a better storyline. According to this http://www.3000ad.com/pics/bcm/photo045.jpg, he focuses 3000AD within Solar System and some outside. I have read the original storyline, and it was crap. Total bull****.
Second thing: Graphics suck ass. Although I have to admit that he did improve a little after his new game Galatic Command Echo Squad came out two weeks ago. You can tel that he is trying to copy from FS SCP here http://www.3000ad.com/pics/gcES/07-12-17/PHOTO009.PNG. But ultimatly, he is not very successful in it

Nope, don't play any, but I don't play many games anyway these days. About Nexus, well, that is indeed a good game, but it had some major flaws that held it back - for instance, the pacing was probably it's biggest. Ships simply didn't turn fast enough, and I've had a couple instances where I had my big ship (the Archangel or whatever) fighting against a small cruiser. The cruiser couldn't kill my ship, but it was fast enough (fast being a relative term) to stay out of it's turn radius so that they would end up in an infinite loop, neither being able to kill each other. But the pacing otherwise was simply too slow...it would take ages for ships to traverse long distances, and the lack of any definite order feedback (such as lines leading from the ship to it's destination/target) or precise movement controls really hampered it for me.

There is also Oolite: oolite.aegidian.org (http://oolite.aegidian.org). Continuous development, currently at version 1.71.2, which seems to be in many ways better than the official 1.65 stable. Being a member of its development team, I would prefer to say no more and leave further comments to whomever gives it a try.

There are quite a few, actually. For example, you could trade your Cobra MkIII for a less capable ship and use the trade-in value to equip the ship fast. Or play at the Hoopy Casinos and be lucky. But I am afraid I am derailing the thread here. Why don't you drop by www.aegidian.org/bb and ask? I'm sure you will find many forum members willing to give you hints to get started.

Title: Re: Still play any space related games?
Post by: BloodEagle on June 18, 2008, 12:46:19 pm
Not trying to defend that particular hack, or anything like that. But Freespace didn't invent the idea of the beam cannon.
Title: Re: Still play any space related games?
Post by: Jeff Vader on June 18, 2008, 12:51:38 pm
Of course it didn't. Evil beamzors have been around for quite some time. But there are certain cases where it does seem that dsmart's been ripping off stuff from FreeSpace, or the MediaVPs in particular. Those thrusters look a lot like the funky green beams of FreeSpace, and if you've watched that epilepsy-causing promotional video of Echo Squad, you have certainly noticed that the explosions in it look awfully familiar as well.
Title: Re: Still play any space related games?
Post by: ShadowGorrath on June 18, 2008, 01:10:34 pm
Well, technically, he can steal the mediavps stuff and get away with it.
Title: Re: Still play any space related games?
Post by: Flipside on June 18, 2008, 02:39:58 pm
No, he can't, the stuff is the property of the people who created it, and cannot be used without permission. What is given is a kind of 'community license', which means that you can use them in the context they are provided at no cost, but you don't have the right to do whatever you choose with them, and you certainly cannot include them in a game in which you yourself profit.

Now, personally, I think Derek has imitated, not plagiarised, and that's almost flattering, and without doing a comparison at a binary level of the effects used, I think it's really not a good idea to start suggesting he took stuff out of the VP's without a bit more evidence, that can lead to trouble.
Title: Re: Still play any space related games?
Post by: Ghostavo on June 18, 2008, 03:05:52 pm
Those thrusters existed before the SCP.

And I'd also wager they existed before FS too.
Title: Re: Still play any space related games?
Post by: Hades on June 18, 2008, 06:22:05 pm
But if FS was the one who used them he still can't rip them off of it because he is selling his games no? And wouldn't that be sort of like pirating? Because even if the game developers release the source code for fans to use you cannot sell anything in the game or anything in the upgrades that the fans make.

Wing Commander I - did this a couple of years ago, took a little bit of creative use with DOS 6 bootdisk, RAMDRIVE.SYS and editing the CONFIG.SYS... But I got it working with 1200 MHz Pentium in DOS 6.22 and it was still playable! Nevermind that I had to save the progress manually to 1.44" disk from RAMDRIVE each time I stopped playing... and saving it to the RAMDRIVE each time I booted up...  The best thing being that I don't even recall the reason why I didn't use DOSBOX, maybe it had something to with sound or overall speed.

Wing Commander II - I haven't even tried to bring it here from home. Played enough of it during those years.

Freespace I and II
It is a couple of years of since I last played Freespace. I'm still waiting the motivition to create the campaign, that literally disappered in the binary space a couple of years ago when I lost all the missions I had created thus so far.

Then there are a couple of less known games like:
Darklight Conflict and Flying Saucer, both of them quite good, though former somewhat lacking in the graphics department. Flying Saucer you can find from Home of the Underdogs. It was an amusing game, which was never shipped, unfortunately.
