Title: Computer crash on game exit
Post by: ReeNoiP on June 16, 2008, 02:24:26 pm
Hi I am using FSO 3.6.9 and the game runs fine, but when I exit the game my computer crashes and restarts. This only happens when I use the OpenGL option.

If it means anything my grapichs card is a Geforce fx 5900.

Any way to prevent this from happening without changeing to direct 3d?

For starters, you could provide some more computer specs. And update any and all drivers. Back in the days when I played Mafia, it would often crash and reboot the computer. Later I managed to track the source of the issue to old sound card drivers.

Definitely check those audio and video drivers.  Also include your power supply wattage in the specs if you know what it is.  I've seen  a few computers (including 2 of my own) do this do to not enough power or a damaged power supply.  Oh and overheating is always a possibility.

Definitely GFX drivers, I'd say.  Why?  It only happens when using OpenGL.  OpenGL / Direct3D = Graphics.  So, update the drivers.  www.nvidia.com

EDIT: And, on the off-chance that you don't have DirectX 9.0c, get that from Microsoft, as well.  www.microsoft.com www.windowsupdate.com  EDIT2: How to tell what version of DirectX you have: Start > Run, type
dxdiag
and hit enter.  Searching for WHQL signed drivers is up to you, but I always hit yes... it will tell you the version regardless.

OK I tried updating my drivers. Unfortunately it did not solve the problem. The strange thing is it only happens when I exit the game. I can play as long as I want with no trouble. I can also run other games without problems.

Anyway here are some more specs (I cant find the chipset if that is important). I do not know about power supply.

OS: Win XP SP2
CPU: Pentium 4 2,4GHz
512MB RAM

CPU-Z can tell you a lot about your rig (link in my signature).

Just for ****s and giggles, try pressing shift+Esc instead of quitting the game by mouse clicking on Exit.

If that doesn't work either, you can try Alt+Tabbing (or Ctrl+Alt+Del-ling) out of the game, and terminate fs2open_<version>.exe from the process list.

Obviously these ways do not solve the problem but might circumvent it while a proper solution is searched for.

Hmph.  Try using a debug build (_d or _debug), enter a mission, and then exit like normal.  Then, in \freespace2\data\, post the fs2_open.log here.

I tried with fs2_open_6_6_9_debug, but now it crashed at the intro movie. I have attached the log and the system specs from CPU-Z.
