Title: Disposing of (Desktop) computers?
Post by: Mars on June 16, 2008, 07:13:47 pm
My trash company won't take them, and all of the major computer recyclers are on the coasts (I'm in the middle of the US). What should I do?

Note: Don't actually burn them.

i dont see why they dont, the only hazmat they contain is lead and monitors contain mercury. of course that doesn't stop businesses from chucking their florescent bulbs. your best bet is to find a dumpster somewhere and anonymously dispose of it there. another thing you can do is sell it to some kid for 20 bucks.

Extract anything of value, make cheap kits and sell them, get the gold out of them, check out all the things to do with old hard drives, make some art thing out of them and claim it's of real value like that dot in a plain sheet of paper...melt the plastic and make toys...unless it's thermosetting, or have a really interesting incineration...

btw, how old is it?

Oh: drop it off a really high place, eg. a 100m cliff, or smash it up with a baseball (or cricket) bat. How can you not think of anything to do with it?

Or, chop it up and dispose of it in your normal garbage bin... :nervous:

The (stack of every computer my father ever owned) age ranges from an ancient 30lb 16Mhz 128Kb RAM machine to a 2000s eMachines 400Mhz 256 MB hunk-o-junk.

There are about 4 computers involved and they all include (and this is the fun part) CRT monitors.\

They all have some water and mouse damage. (garage storage)

That's an idea, give them more mouse damage! If you have the mouse attached to them...  :ick:
You could try and make some old looking T.V if the CRT's work.

Look into donating them to an educational institute or some other non profit organization.  You can get a tax write off that way just get a receipt.

Use some of them to play Descent.  (Needs 486 ~25-100 Mhz, 16 MB or more RAM, sound card, DOS 6 or so).  Of course, D2X-XL makes that kind of pointless...

get you some metal shears and cut the cases down to little peces a couple inches square, toss them over time. a hammer makes quick work of boards. drives can be stuffed in with the normal trash, and maybe also the psu if its not too big. a large sledge can make short work of a monitor tube, bag it and start slamming it until the largest piece is no bigger than your fist.

Pretty much everything has screws and can be taken apart, or slots that can be disassembled, if you want it in small pieces.  The power box will come apart.  The only thing you might have problems with is: The CRTS, The motherboard, and perhaps the case (if it's not disassemblable).  however, the motherboard and case can be fixed with Nuke's method.  The CRT, well, how do you throw out a TV?

All the towns here in MA have local recycling centers.

I have to drive mine to those centers, but its free. Call your local municipal recycling/trash authority and ask.

You play Descent too, jr2?

What I did with my old computer (which ran Windows 3.11) was put it at the garbage dump at the foot of my void deck.

Yup.  If you haven't checked it out, look at the D2X-XL link in my sig.  ;)

Hey I was one of the first generation of people in the semi-sub-official d2xxl thread...

Not that I can run D2XXL on my nice new computer.

Then just run normal D2 then.

I have D2, D3 and FS2 installed on my "uncrashable" family computer.
