"On completion, Dubailand will be twice the size of Walt Disney World Resort in Florida, making it the biggest theme/amusement park in the world."

And then the oil will run out, and it'll be the most unemployed place on Earth.

What's so funny about them getting to debt? This is a bit similar to how the rest of the world can't wait to see US in debt.

They're building it for the tourists. Given their beaches and malls Dubai is basically positioning itself as a jumping off point between Europe and the Far East. Quite sensible really actually. Europe has nothing that can compete and given the prices in France a cheap flight to Dubai could work out the same price.

They are only doing this to ensure that there is still something to go to Dubai for after the oil dries up.  I'd like to see what happens when they open up the Eco area as I work in a theme park with an Eco Zone myself...

If nothing else, it will help them get rid of all the hippies that went over there in the 60's and won't leave ;)

Actually Dubai is not a major oil player...they are a big port and a center for trade in the Middle East.  All of this development and theme parks, indoor skiing, etc. is because they want to be a huge tourist attraction by the time the oil DOES run out.  Trade will continue almost certainly.  Its a very unique country.
