It will run on a mac.  It won't ruin on a mac.

oops sorry about the stupid spelling error there.
but thanks for the info, a friend of mine has a mac and wanted to know if FS would run on it, he's about fed up with the earthbound flight sim scene

It'll run on a Mac. Just make sure you get the proper file to do so, of course.

Mods work, too.

The only things that I think you can't do on a Mac are related to editing POFs and ANIs, simply because (to my knowledge) no one has made tools for doing so that are Mac-compatible.

You need the Mac launcher and build, use the installer.

As far as I know, FreeSpace (Retail) won't run on a Mac. But FSOpen and the FSPort will  :P

I read this sentence, and got really excited, thinking that you were talking about an EarthBound (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EarthBound) flight sim, which would be AWESOME.

Then I read it again and realized my mistake.

Turey, my friend it IS an Earthbound flight sim, its set in WW2, The name of the game is Aces High, He was thinking about downloading Vega Strike and I told him about FS, I'm telling you there is WAY more people that still play FS than EVER post on this board :)

Apart from the game engine, the Launcher and mod.ini files, all the files work on Windows, Mac and Linux. Turey's Installer can download the game engines for all three OS choices. But for a Mac, you'll need to manually download a Mac Launcher. Those can be found from Cross-Platform Development in the Source Code Project board.

Edit: A Mac Launcher (http://soulstorm-creations.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=22&Itemid=42).

Editzor: Actually, I think that you can just copy your installation of FSO to a Mac and then just get the Mac version of the game engine and the Launcher. It would at least save an awful lot of download time and bandwidth.

Basically, get the freespace_open_3_6_9.dmg, and the launcher that Lobo posted.

cool, thanks guys. Personally I don't have such problems as he does with a mac, You know since I'm addicted to windows and can't afford therapy or M/S detox :)
but I did manage to solve all my windows vista problems with a fresh copy of windows xp home and a real old copy of a format utility on a windows 98SE disk

The geese can be troublesome, yet your performance is excellent, young grasshopper.

It appears that you, dear tinfoil, are making such an effort.

Why 3.6.9?  I have a 3.6.10 Mac build and play with my windows buddies.

You can get 3.6.10, but I was just giving him the easiest option, as it's included in the launcher.

Well, I don't think it's the fact that you are on windows.  I am on a mac, and I had no trouble using turey's installer and going.  However, I was on IRC the other day with someone who was having trouble getting started with Windows (though that may have been partially because we were all giving conflicting advice at times :nervous:).  Anyway, I've found that installing things on windoze can be extremely frustrating.  I have another IRC story about someone who spent 6 hours trying to install M$'s developer tools, but failed because the installer was more or less retarded.  But let's not turn this into another Mac vs PC war...
Title: Re: Freespace ona mac
Post by: wolfen on June 26, 2008, 07:45:48 pm
Oh no I'd NEVER want to start a PC vs Mac war, Epically since if windows' next great grand and glorious O/S is as good as the last O/S (vista) I'll be a hard core linux person.
As far as Mac's and Pc's, I've seen some people that swear by Mac, and some that swear by Pc, so both are equal as far as I'm concerned, so no war here :)
now Linux, that's another story altogether, I have a spare Hdd laying around that I installed kubantu on and I like that better than Mac of PC except that finding stuff that runs on Linux that I'm used to using is really hard at times.

Well with Wine it's getting better, but there are good alternate programs for Linux, in some cases better than for Windows and Mac. And from what I can see, there are as many or more programs for Linux as for Mac.

I couldn't find the ones I wanted for Kubantu, I need some sort of winamp, and a flash player so I can watch youtube video's. I like the Linux distro, just right now I'm addicted to windows.

VLC is a flash player, and Amarok is a pretty good WinAmp.

1. It's Kubuntu.
2. You should be able to install it with Adept.
3. (directed more towards cole) Does VLC work as a Flash plugin? wolfen seemed to be more concerned about watching Youtube videos, which, at least according to my current level of wise, requires a Flash plugin.

You can download Flash Player for Linux. I'm just a novice, but I got the basics to work. You have to download the tar.gz version of FlashPlayer, the command line version, because the others don't work. Open it with the Terminal, and follow the prompts.

As for VLC, http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-ubuntu.html

Thanks a lot, that's what I'll need, I WILL get Kubantu up and running eventually its on a separate hard drive in the desk drawer right now till I collect all the goodies I need for it

He means with the same functionality/ease of use. Man, Ubarntu is cool. However, I'm liking Linux Mint. I only used the CD, but it's pretty cool.

Yeah, I understood that part, but failed to see the connection between what he quoted and what he typed.

I ain't touching Linux until it will automatically detect my mp3 player. Though the last time I tried, I was rather surprised that Kubuntu actually detected my integrated Bluetooth adapter immediately.

Just set it as a mass storage device and use it as a drive, ergo download songs manually.
