There are tons of tutorials out there. Or, you can do what I do, and teach yourself.

Itried the official tutorial that came with the program but cant place ships somehow?
rightclick,select race,select ship type does nothing. No way to make new stuff.

wasn't supposed to press ctrl while clicking? triyed that?

Try turning on show ship models or outlines in the view menu then placing one.

Yeah, just select the correct ship from the list and Ctrl-click to place it. Furthermore, I strongly recommend following the extended walkthrough (in the Help files): it will help you a lot.
