Title: 3 problems
Post by: nilloc93 on June 20, 2008, 01:38:19 am
1st ok i downloaded FS2 and got it installed just fine but when i go to play it ses that i have -1154MB of ram how an i have negative ram?
2nd does FS2 open installer normoly take like 4 hours to install? cause i did this then i got rid of it when it did not work and i don't think i should have to wait another 4 hours to play this game
3rd i downloaded openall 1.1 fromt he openall website thing i got a nice little 556kb zip fine i unzipped it and clicked on the .exe file it gaem me a bunch of text and i clicked "ok" it sed installation complete INSTANTLY this seems odd since nothing happened
if you want me system specs i can give em but lets say this computer is but a meager 6 months old is it like WAY to new to play a game like this caue i can play a few older games on here i can run the descent #1 on here i think

How much memory do you have?  Specs would probably help a lot.

The installer takes so long because it has to download all the stuff again if you delete it.

OpenAL does install very quickly.  If you run the launcher and don't get the OpenAL message then it's most likely installed correctly.

I'm not going to say the OS is the problem but it could be.  64 bit version(s)? Never heard of a config like that but it is possible that it's not reading more than 2 gigs of ram so it's showing the remainder as a negative.  That's just a guess and it would be better to wait for someone with more knowledge of FS2_Open and Vista.

While you're waiting you might also want to check out the known Nvidia problem thread in the support forum.

Don`t worry about the OpenAL thing. It`s just a .DLL file that you needed to play FS2. It`ll do what it`s supposed to without you having to ever see it again.

Getting FSO might help. If you don't want to download a lot of stuff, you can get Turey's FSO Installer and point it at your current FS2 installation. That way it won't redownload the retail files. The only things you need to play FSo are the FSO executables and the Launcher. Downloading those takes little time. Anything else, like the MediaVPs, is extra content that you can download if you want.

Anybody heard of Windows XP Black Edition?

A friend of mine has it and it comes with Windows Blinds that make it look like Vista, (includes the clock and everything). Looks neat!

OK. Could you please take more than 3 seconds and spell right.

So just let the installer run, it will be more than 4 hours, and OpenAL installed fine.

Think I'm with Lobo on this one.  It's close to a full moon isn't it?

OK what exactly do you have installed as far as FS2 Retail and FS2_Open?  Where did you install it to (screenshot of the directory might help).

If you have Retail installed but not FS2_Open installed run Turey's installer and as stated all you need are the main components and the launcher.  You don't need to download all the mods those are what take the most time.  You can always rerun the install and get them later.

If you have FS2_Open installed run the launcher.exe.  It doesn't download anything and should open up immediately.  Check your settings in the launcher and run the game.

Note you cannot have FS2_Open installed in any special folders like my documents or the desktop.

Wait up Lobo.............

Run launcher.exe NOT the fs2_open exe.  Launcher.exe tells the game what settings to use.  If you don't run it at least once then the game won't work.

Well, in any case, if the problem persists, try updating the drivers of your grahpics card. Or something.

error intializing graphics
cannot understand 'videocardFs2open' registry entry!

You should have mentioned that error earlier as it really narrows down the cause of your problem. I can think of a few causes off the top of my head.

1) You never ran launcher.exe and clicked run, okay or apply after choosing an exe from the browse button at the top.
2) You did but picked FS2.exe instead of an FS2_Open exe.
3) You're not running as an administrator on your PC and thus don't have the rights needed to write to the registry
4) The Registry has simply buggered up added the entry and you'll have to do it manually.

If you can eliminate the first 3 I'll tell you how to do the 4th.

Well normally when you roast stuff on the BBQ your wrap it in tinfoil (although it's actually aluminum).  You just happened to be in the right thread at the wrong time.     Figured I'd let you bake for awhile.

Reminds me of that picture in the MSPaint thread, with one Sathanas dripping BBQ sauce into Capella:
"Careful not to add too much."
"Yeah, yeah..."

But I looked through the whole thread and couldn't find it. :( Someone really needs to archive those.
