Title: Bomber target priorities
Post by: FUBAR-BDHR on June 20, 2008, 01:50:44 am
Not the usual question on them but something a bit different.  Is there some logic as to the way bombers target ships/stations when given orders to either attack or disarm?  I've noticed in the mission I'm working on they seem to go out of their way to fly out of range over the target before attacking.  Thought they were just being stupid AI then I noticed they were actually obeying the orders it just took forever.  Turret 1 (beam turret) is clear on the other side and blocked from a straight line attack which made me wonder if they are are trying to take it out first.  Later in the game they will do a straight on attack.  Of course this is in TBP multiplayer so respawns are involved as well as the TBP profile.

Second part of question.  Is there something that would prevent bombers from attacking sentry guns?

If told to disarm they will follow the paths for the weapons subsystem and each individual turret subsystem. You can turn those on in FRED to help with your positioning.

Weapon paths go out in all directions in FRED and the bombers sure don't look like they are attacking along those paths at least not at the beginning of the mission.  It would be almost a straight line for them to go in and take out turrets 4, 10, and 11.  There is a model path that points straight up but it must be a subsystem since it doesn't target as a turret.
