Title: Request: Recolour of FS2 Interface
Post by: T-Man on June 22, 2008, 05:33:53 am
I've read of people requesting that Port try to restore the old FS1 interface in FS2, and the responses that it would require ludicrous ammounts of work and time to resize everything and so is impossible for now.

However, i was thinking, maybe as an easier comprimise, someone interested could use photoshop or something to recolour the FS2 interface art, so the interface stays the same but the colours/background are the ones found in FS1, using the FS1 interface as reference.

It would still be a big project for whoever took it up, but it would certainly add that sense of retro to FS-Port, and perhaps some projects would find a use for it (i certainly would with mine).

But yeah, just in idea i thought i'd float to see if anyone was willing.

interface's ani are all white. the colors are decided by the player in the HUD options

Like Flaming_Sword did for his Shivan mod interface, get Imagemagick and use a batch to recolour the interface to any colour you want in minutes. Then, all you'd need would be to fix/restore the alpha colour for the files.

If it helps, I'm currently doing this exact thing for my shivan mod. I'm hoping to release templates later, so dialog boxes and buttons and stuff (from FS2) can be easily recoloured and slapped on top of any desired background.

For now, though, the first release of my mod contains an interface which is simply recoloured and can be recoloured again using imagemagick or any other image manipulation software. The Alpha colour must be restored after the recolour, though.

Ask the ones who created the BtRL interface, that was good.

T-Man - I've already been increasing the resolution of some of the FS1 HUD graphics so they can be larger for
FS port. Goober's also coded a way to switch between HUDs from FS1 & 2. So it's not really "such" an impossible task
as it's already got progress made in that direction.

Flaming_Sword - You should probably try to get in touch with Backslash as he's working on making
the HUD more modular and you two can probably swap ideas on how to either limit your work
or discuss better ways of futureproofing your templating.

FANTASTIC! Hats off to goober.

Er, I'm not working on the HUD at all, just recolouring the GUI.

Templates so far are in TGA, based on the red recolour in the first release of the mod (makes colour rotation easier, since I already have values for imagemagick used for creating the shivan recolour packs) and consist of boxes and buttons etc., but with background completely transparent. Resolution is 1024x768.

Current screen creation method in GIMP is to open 1024x768 background image, open template as layer, merge down, remove alpha channel, then save in desired format (scaling down for 640x480). Results can be seen in the last few load screens posted in my mod thread. Apologies if this is not particularly efficient, I'm still a n00b when it comes to image manipulation.

Mm, nice, are you doing the entire FS1 game interface, or just the HUD part?

I'm just working on the HUD, Bax already had me make some concept HUD pieces
so he could feature test some things - so he wanted to see if I could do this.

I'm just going from 640x480 to 1024x768... so it's not a huge jump.
Being that all the PSDs have been sent with the PCXs when I finish them, I'd imagine
there wouldn't be much image loss if you went a bit above that.

Flaming - sorry for the mix up, I figured your templating was something more advanced
that you were trying to integrate.

Go grab the FS1 demo.  ;)  Or search for FS1 screenshots.  If you can't find any, I can dig up my FS1 discs and fire it up again.
