Title: FS_Open/FRED Crashes on startup
Post by: T-Man on June 22, 2008, 07:48:34 am
I've just installed FS_Open onto my desktop computer using the Installer. Trying to run it and i can only get FS_Open working in Direct 3D8, if i try to run OpenGL or run FRED i always get a message like this in the errorlog:

fs2_open_3_6_9 caused an Illegal Instruction in module nvoglnt.dll at 001b:6957d80f.
Exception handler called in FreeSpace 2 Main Thread.
Error occurred at 6/22/2008 13:30:06.
C:\Games\Freespace 2\fs2_open_3_6_9.exe, run by user.
1 processor(s), type 586.
512 MBytes physical memory.

...and a page of numbers...

Specs are:

XP Pro SP2
AMD Athlon Processor
1.39 GHz, 512MB RAM
Nvidia GeForce 6200 graphics card

Running it "from the box" (so the VPs are as the installer inserts them). Options are -mod mediavps -spec -glow -jpgtga -mipmap -2d_poof -missile_lighting -3dwarp -warp_flash

I've installed, then re-installed OpenGL (uninstalling beforehand too), checked my settings; everything is fine, it just refuses to work if i try OGL or FRED. Does anyone know what's going on? I'd love to get this working as it took nearly a day's worth of downloading to for the installer to finish.

did you try reinstalling your graphics card ?
the "nv" starting the name of the module indicates it's a nvidia file.
try to reinstall your driver or put them up to date.

Fred uses only OpenGL...

Driver version? And how exactly have you reinstalled OpenGL as it is part of graphic drivers these days.

You could try running the debug build and then posting the 'fs2_open.log' file here

I installed OGL using the single installer linked to on Karajorma's help thing.

I havent updated the drivers for this card in a long time (i've been at uni while this computer is at home). I'll try that when i can and see if that's it.

Where does it place the FS2_Open.log file?

:wtf: The what? Don't do that. As Wanderer already said, OpenGL is included in the drivers of your graphics card. If you try to "find and install" OpenGL, you might end up getting the OpenGL installre for Windows 95 that tinfoil seems to have found (and which actually dates back 13 years).

He must of meant OpenAL.

@T-Man: OpenGL is included in your video card drivers, just install the latest version.

That too. So, to clarify, T-Man: OpenGL has to do with the graphics and OpenAL has to do with sound. Reinstalling OpenAL countless times won't affect your OpenGL issue in any way. Or if it does, something quite evil has occured.

*has never noticed that OpenGL and OpenAL are different things*

*finally realises*

...:o...

*Starts banging head against wall*

I may of just found my problem

Indeed. So, try updating the graphics card drivers. It is highly likely that it will solve your problem.

Okay, its no longer having problems with the .dll file, but now i'm getting new problems, and one sounds real bad.

The first one i get is when i try to run Open on GL. It saids that it "Cannot find proper pixel information for OpenGL W32"

And then i try to access FRED, it tells me the following (two error messages one after the other):

---

Error: Current GL Version of 1.1 is less than the required version of 1.2.
Switch video modes or update your drivers.

Error: The required OpenGL extension 'Èvo' is not supported by your current driver version or graphics card.  You can either use the Direct3D rendering engine (non-FRED builds only) or update your video card drivers.

---

It still runs FRED, but the models have no textures.

I know it saids what it saids, but surely that can't be. This isn't an old card (or so i was told by my dad, who put it in), and i just installed the latest drivers for it.

"Cannot find proper pixel information for OpenGL W32"
Fascinating. That is exactly the error report woutersmits was getting some time ago. Unfortunately, due to the unbreakable language barrier between him and everyone else, no one knows whether he got it working or not.

That, in turn, is what Admiral Edivad is experiencing at the moment. Even with new drivers. I'm running out of ideas.

how did you updated your driver ?
went to the nvidia site and downloaded the correct driver ?
did you try uninstalling the driver before installing the other ?

I went to the Nvidia website and used their hardware detector to find the latest driver. I was under the impression it overwrote the old one when it installed.

Yup. That it should.

As for your error, no comment. Try playing with the "Video" tab.
