Title: Why do some ships come in as ulyses?
Post by: IronForge on June 23, 2008, 06:15:15 am
Theres this insane bug, where my capital ships somehow become ulysses fighters?
My colossus, sathanas and typhoons end up being converted when i played the mission?

The path freespace looks for missions in is \<freespace installation directory>\data\missions\.

I can imagine how that feels.

"Back up is coming, Alpha One! We're sending the Colossus!"
*warp in*
"..."
"THAT'S the Colossus?!?!?!"

If you try to place a ship in a mission and the game engine is unable to find it from the table files, it will automatically replace it with a Ulysses.

Also, in order to avoid confusion, please don't completely remake your posts.

so why cant it find it in the tables?

Also why wont the beam cannons fire on each other? how do i enable weapons of mass destruction? forget that!! most of the turrets are not working!!

Also I cant see the entire weapon name cos its too long and the dropdown list (under edit weapons) cant fit it. is there any fix?

This usually happens when you have a table in \data\tables, or have a mod running.

Yeah.. ships getting replaced with ulysses (or in other mods by the defined default ship) means the game encountered a ship that was not defined in the ships.tbl - or the related tbm - file(s). Beam cannons are disabled by default but they can be globally activated in the FRED mission specs editor ('beam free ships by default') or by manually fredding the beams. No idea what you mean by weapons of mass destruction... And the turret issue could be related to the fact that beams (and beam turrets) are locked unless freed.

I'm assuming this is a bug with your own FREDded missons, right?

so why cant it find it in the tables?

Most likely explanation is that FRED and FS2_Open are looking in different places. If you selected the FS1 Port as your mod but run FRED by clicking on its icon then FRED will only be using the Retail FS2 data. When you run FS2_Open it will use the port's data if that overrides that from FS2.

The solution is to make sure both are running the same mod. Select no mod or mediavps from the mod tab and see if that fixes your problem.

you may also try to add "-mod fsport" for example to your FRED shortcut

More specifically, it'll replace the missing ships with whatever the first ship is in the ship.tbl I know because for one of my MODs I reogranised it alphabetically and kept seeing Ares in some 3rd party missions.

Okay, so in conclusion, check your filepaths, and ensure everything is where is should be.

Tables should go in \<freespace installation directory>\data\tables\ directory,
Misssions should go in \<freespace installation directory>\data\missions\ directory.

And for OMFGWTFBBQHAXX0R weapons of mass destruction, always ensure the "beam-free-all" SEXP is called in the missions.
