Something is afoot!
The Blizzard website (http://www.blizzard.com) has a new splashscreen that appears to be changing. The ice seems to point, logically, to the impending release of Wrath of the Lich King (my bad). However, some believe this could be the announcement of the Second Coming Diablo III. Only time will tell.
First splashscreen:

Second splashscreen:

Third splashscreen:

Seems like Wrath of the Lich King to me..
4 openings for a next-gen MMO ... plus a bunch of 3D environment openings. And design openings too. Sounds like a new project, alright. If they're gonna turn D3 into a MMO, I'll be torn between irritation, amusement and flat out joyfulness.
 Go to the main page, and feast your eyes on the ZERG ENERGY DRINK!
=edit=
Take a closer look at the splash. There are runes around the central section of the picture. One of the bigger ones on the left seems familiar to me. Looks decidedly Protoss to me.

Kotaku's (http://www.kotaku.com.au/games/2008/06/does_this_latest_update_prove_diablo_iii_or_not.html) got some folks who reckon those runes correspond to some of the runes in Diablo II. Flimsy, sure, but it's something.
-
Holy Sathanas! That DOES look like the Hel rune! No wonder it looked familiar. Number of times I've assembled the rune word Silence (Dol-Eld-Hel-Ist-Tir-Vex)...
-
I like Leaf for my fire sorceresses. Cheap, easy, and oh so effective.
-
I was a sword barb. So i had twin colossus blades, both of them Silences. Boosted by resistances off the charts, since each blade adds 75 resist, plus my barb's own natural resistance.
I named him Srin Odessa after the MW4 Mercs character, then later realised Srin was a she. :doubt:
-
cool stuff! I wonder how Diablo III will look like...
-
Its not announced that its D3. Its just speculation. It could also relate to Wrath of the Lich King, but there is no doubt that Blizzard is working on another MMO.
Besides, I don't really call Diablo having much crystals. Only in the Throne of Destruction, and those were red.
-
Stars, now. But I suspect it's just something to do with Wrath of the Lich King, or maybe Starcraft 2. Blizzard know their fans well - more than likely these mixed signals are very deliberate.
-
Yea true, but you cannot deny the fact that blizzard is working on a next gen MMO....
-
I wish I could.
-
Me too. I wouldn't want Diablo 3 to be another WoW.
-
http://www.worldofwar.net/n/414868/blizzard-image-solved
It seems the rune is the same as one of the runes in Frostmourn (Artha's Sword).
-
Mefustae's Kotaku (http://www.kotaku.com.au/games/2008/06/does_this_latest_update_prove_diablo_iii_or_not.html) link had that theory too.
And that article is based on the first splash, not the second and now third splash.
-

Confirmed that they're announcing a new title.
-
A new splash screen is up (http://www.blizzard.com). The central image looks distinctly like the forehead of a Protoss.
-
World of Starcraft, then?
EDIT: Ah, but the ambiguity continues. If you connect the symbols on the ice it creates a pentagram. Oh, Blizzard, you cards.
-
Oh ? Does it now ...
Holy Sathanas you're right!
-
Diablo 3 is the current guess..
http://www.wowinsider.com/photos/june-2008-splash-screen-speculation/884156/
-
And no one's noticed the pentagram, except Ransom?
Looks like someone did notice it; its number 20 on the link flipside gave.
That face in the middle can fit the Protoss perfectly too, because of that little ridge in between. When's the exact date of WWI?
Blizzard really know how to make the fans stress.
Also, what is this Lost Viking ? It seems to have some precedence in the splash images too, not the least because of the PPE (Purple Penguin of Evil)'s number codes.
-
Blizzard's artists are being arses.
The current picture can be a representation of every single one of their franchises.
The eyes can be the eyes of Diablo, random Protoss or the Lich King.
-
Or you can also say they're incredibly awesome. Pwnsome. Godlike. Blizzard-like!
-
Blizzard announced that it is, indeed, Diablo III. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pw1Bk5QLZic) :)
-
I don't even need to click on a You-Tube link to know where it most likely heads.
Yup. I was right.
I think we are going to have to start considering Rick-Rolling under the Forum Rules.
-
I think we are going to have to start considering Rick-Rolling under the Forum Rules.
Seconded. Rick-Rolling is about as fun as goatse.

That's kind of the point, though.
I don't mind it. It's certainly more fun than just announcing whatever it is.
-
I remember there's some one whose entire sig is one big rick-roll.
-
There comes a point in any meme where it changes from a mildly amusing joke to something that is simply annoying and un-funny and only done by people who simply cannot let it go.
Rick-Rolling reached that point several months ago.
-
I dunno, if i check the blizzard splash screen only to get dramatically rick rolled, i would potentially be amused.
-
Heh, well, if the Splash Screen itself changed to a Rick-Roll then, yes, I'd be inclined to agree, but there's a certain 'Epic' factor to that which most certainly doesn't exist here.
-
If you look at the splashscreen now.. I think It's like a protoss. The reflection of the eyes show some face.
Can it be a Xel'Naga?
-
My brother is convinced its Diablo III because there are several runes in the outer areas of the latest splash screen and the one rune in the top left is a Hel rune from Diablo II.
-
Apparently one of the Runes is also from Arthas' sword as well, the artists have been very clever
-
Zomg. It could be a Xel'Naga. Never thought of that ... But the only shot of the Xel Naga is from that black and white picture in the Starcraft manual.
Whoever thought of this splash screen thing was pretty smart. Have to admit its rather slick too.
-
There's a new image on the main site. Looks kinda freaky.
-
That image was what we've been discussing for the past 5 posts. :p
-
There's now a winking smiley rune in there as well...
-
They changed it again. Its now pretty discernable as not a Death Knight. Its obvious that its either a Protoss or something we've never seen before.
-
This is apparently being given out at the Blizzard WWI.

... It seems to fit. Diablo and the eye picture. Oh, but the ridge in between the eyes doesn't fit.
-
Confirmed. It's Diablo 3.
-
YESSS!!! YESSS!! HOLY SATHANAS ITS DIABLO THREEEEE!!!
-
http://www.blizzard.com/diablo3/
Cinematic and gameplay trailers. **** yes.
This is the most excited I've been about a Blizzard game since, well, Diablo 2.
-
You know whats the best part?
ITS NOT AN MMO! WOOT!
-
I suspect those 'Next-Gen MMO' job listings were actually a bit of clever misdirection. Diablo's gameplay is MMO-like in many ways - probably this is indeed the project they referred to.
-
They still have at least one unannounced project in the works; if this is Project Hydra, then the other one must be an MMO.
-
Wasn't "Hydra" the code-name for the MMO?
-
O-rly? Well, then you know what all those job listings ar--
.... I just thought. Maybe its a Lost Vikings MMO?
-
Looks pretty sweet....downloading the trailers right now. The Cinematic trailer is what you'd expect from Blizzard which means its jaw droppingly gorgeous!
-
Awesome, I was hoping it would be Diablo 3! :D
-
Awesome awesome awesome. I like the new Barbarian's charge skill! In fact, I'm going to re-install D2 now ... Maybe the mods could change the topic to Diablo 3 :D
-
So its gonna come out in 3 years.... zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.........
-
Diablo III, eh? So, yeah, who was right?
Yep, I was. That's me. Right on.
Thankyouverymuch.
-
wewt.
-
Is anyone else kinda disapointed? I've watched both the theatrical and gameplay trailers, and while i'm sure the game will be awesome....it just seems to be more of the same. even Starcraft 2 suffers from...well this is the same game we palyed eons ago, just prettier and a different plot line. I was really hoping for a new title, something different but with that same level of Blizzard quality... instead it seems like they're out of original ideas and will forever be cranking out Warcraft (thanks to the new starcraft engine there's bound to be 4 right?), Starcraft and Diablo versions every so often.
I'm much more excited about Spore, Prototype, Dead Space, and Tom Clancys HAWX, and other new IPs then i am about rehashes of old titles...
(i know there where alot of console games on there, but my pc is lacking as of late and i can't play the newest of the new...)
Anyone else with me?
PS: this doesn't mean i won't buy Starcraft...i likely will....may even give diablo a chance, but was never into it the same way.
-
Diablo 3 is more exciting than Starcraft 2 because while there's been a ton of great RTSes since the first Starcraft, there's been nothing to replace Diablo 2. I mean, Titan Quest was cool, but all it really did was make me want a new Diablo game more. A lot of people have been waiting for this for a long time and Blizzard would be crazy to try bringing out a new IP at this point.
I'll admit I am hoping for a new Blizzard IP after this, though. But it's Blizzard - they've always been perfectionists more than creators.
-
Actually, Thor, I tend to play by it by ear. The post-D3 announcement euphoria has worn off, so yes, I do agree that the gameplay does look similar.
However, it appears a tad slower paced than D2 to me. And its only probably in pre-alpha, so there's still a long way to go, and I think, if I were Blizzard, I'd premier D3 with some similar gameplay stuff, to assure the fans that, "Hey, its a new game, but don't worry, it will be familiar to you guys." Then as time goes on, I'd preview newer stuff.
-
that makes sense stormkeeper and ransom. I'm still not enthused about it, but hopefully this will make the fans boys happy so the blizzard guys can get to something new :P

No you're not the only one, thats what I've been saying in all "woot Blizzard" topics I see around here.
Although, they seem to dramatically change something in D3... the visual style at the moment is the same crappy cartoonish style of SC, W3 and WoW... being completely different (and for the worse IMO) then D1 and D2... but hey! its Blizzard: cartoons are da ****s!!! :P
-
I like the fact that you can drop a wall on your enemies though. And if the sorceress is still there, and they implement rag doll physics like in Titan's Quest ... Well. Let's just say that a lot of bodies are gonna fly around the place.
-
The gameplay video looks pretty solid. If the storyline is as good, this game seems to fill it's predecessors shoes pretty well.
-
As long as we don't see 'World of Diablo', I'm happy ;)
-
As long as we don't see 'World of Diablo', I'm happy ;)
Me too.
-
As long as we don't see 'World of Diablo', I'm happy ;)
That would be quite arguably redundant.
-
I was just reading the press release (http://www.blizzard.com/us/press/080628.html) and I found an interesting bit:
Diablo III will feature a custom 3D-graphics engine to render lush indoor and outdoor areas of Sanctuary with a high level of detail and vivid special effects. The game's physics-enhanced environments will be interactive and destructible, offering traps and obstacles that create added danger for players and monsters alike. These elements, along with a new quest system and random scripted events, will be integrated into the game's random-level generator, giving Diablo III the ultimate combination of dynamic gameplay and replayability. Cooperative and competitive play will be available online through an upgraded version of Blizzard Entertainment's renowned online gaming service, Battle.net®.
A new quest system, random scripted events and a random-level generator. Could this be a random quest generator?
-
As long as we don't see 'World of Diablo', I'm happy ;)
That would be quite arguably redundant.
I don't think there's a server on the planet that could handle that many NPC's ;)
-
I'm interested to see what some of the other classes are like. I was never a huge Diablo fan by my brother is going nuts over the announcement :)
-
I hope they still have the sorceress. That was one of my favorite characters; even if you died, you could still kill the mobs. :D
When its released, we should form a HLP guild :D
