A few of the desktops wallpapers look cool but otherwise from that, the icons are a waste of memory & processors power and not to mention the amount of crap people have on their computer...and chat programs with the exclusion of icq/mirc/irc there usually waste your life away and time, because your talking to people you have absolutley no interests with or even know in real life for that matter.

well enough beating I think

And, I would upload  my desktop, but stupid Pathfinderz isn't working..oh well.

Post by: Xelion on February 23, 2002, 09:05:06 pm
Alikchi you git ::Multi-Tasking:: is using programs simultaneously not having multiple icons on your desktop, and all I was saying is that its not worth 2 cents staying on chat programs for more than 20 minutes a day unless your exchanging information about projects etc...Its just a waste of time.:doubt:
Title: Desktop Pimping Thread 23/02/02
Post by: LtNarol on February 23, 2002, 10:14:46 pm
As you can see, Max here is our typical "get it done then do something else" kinda person...personally, i chat with my friends on MSN and AIM...ICQ is for projects.  As for icons, it makes it more convenient for me to access the 20 or so programs i use to mod fs2, now i only have to dig for 12 or so as the rest are linked to my desktop.
Title: Desktop Pimping Thread 23/02/02
Post by: CP5670 on February 23, 2002, 10:57:07 pm
LOL look at my desktop; I only have some 8 or so icons and the start menu also has almost nothing in it. I launch all of my games and programs by directly opening the exe from a file manager program. I only keep explorer and systray open, so free system resources remain at a maximum.;)

:sigh: That's a pity. But, I don't mind a great deal - I was actually searching for that song in particular, not the JoCs, at the time. It's okay, I quite like the song... and besides, it's only one on the playlist. ;)

What is it with all those icons? I never use icons, takes space and messes my wallpaper up

:p Launching stuff from the quick launch and using the run menu is much easier.

See what I mean the render genius spoke out and gave his gold away....simplicity..thats how he does his renders ;), using 12 programs to make a model for fs2 is stupid. To say the least, having so many icons, just says your to slack to use the start bar (20+). All I have are about 6-8 icons plus my four shortcut keyboard keys and my work becomes much smoother, and I get less distracted. As for chat progs it withers your life away.

::end communication::

I have no more comments neither will I commit any more time to such a pointless argument. have a good day :) :p

Hmmm. In light of this I think it's time for me to buy a new processor. My PIII 500 struggles with Winamp and Yahoo Messenger. Although Winamp is on full decoding with 16-bit sound, full stereo and a ****-load of other wasteful options.

Or that you are too lazy to be a real man and open up the exe from a file program like I do...:D

My processor (athlon 1400) works fine in games with only Trillian open, along with the standard explorer and systray programs. I always like maximum performance when playing games.;) (which is why I did some heavy overclocking, lol:D)

But im lazy and damn proud of it :D no way in this life am i gonna spend five minutes scrolling through the start menu for ever program i need, especially with the number i have in there.  I cant even see the whole list at any one time.  I dont have that much time, which is why i have so many shortcuts.

(Note, since i took up the 158th project, my HDD went from 3 gig used to 7.8 with 16 new programs and accessories)

One of the features of XP is the ability to turn off those icons because they're all on the new Start Menu. :)

I have them on my desktop (It was the first thing I did after installing XP) because the old ways are so ingrained into my brain that its difficult to change them. I even open the Hard Drive icon on my desktop and go up a level to My Computer to open a CD-ROM by right-clicking it and selecting 'Open' occasionally because while I could disable automatic AutoRun I couldn't for the life of me figure out how to disable AutoRun from occuring after double-clicking the CD icon.

Hey, at least I used HTML to size mine down :)

We need lvlshot back but I guess thats one of things thats on the backburner right now...

Oh and for users of Windows versions less than XP theres a way to get rid of the ugly patches of desktop colour from behind your icon titles:

http://people.ne.mediaone.net/jguerette/transparent/

Just dump a shortcut to it in your StartUp folder such:

{path to program}\Transparent.exe /R100

and you're golden.

edit: btw it doesn't take up all that many system resources, I used to run it back when I ran Win2k:

No way I upload mine. Not until I get that image polished and released (and sold for lots of money).:D

I used to have that purply city-sphere jellyfish thing, bring that up and it'll suffice. Nothing else fancy, except a startling number of expired shareware programs that weren't built to lock themselves after the set date.

I think every PSP before 6 used to let you keep going post 30 days. My version of PSP4 used to say 'You are on day: 376 of your 30 day trial'. It was amusing.

The old Winzip (probably the new ones, too), had a little running display in the nag window where it would rapidly count up the days it's gone past the expiration date at about 30 a second. I haven't seen it stop in the past year, and I actually waited to see at one point.;)

As you can see from the screenie it worked perfectly fine for me. Had it not been made unnecessary by M$ (finally) including the feature in XP I'd still be using it.

As some of you already guessed, Setekh did that render, I grabbed it when he put it up here (and subsequently p1mped it on the VBB). I did resize it down to 800x600 though, Windows own resize routine made it look like crap.

The bad thing about lvlshot is that its nowhere near as good as a true thumbnail image as far as loading time is concerned.  Especially if you're on dial-up like me...in which this thread takes FOREVER to load.
