Title: Taylor fixes half of FS2_Open's bugs!
Post by: karajorma on June 25, 2008, 01:14:55 pm
While I had to do a search for a bug I resolved on Mantis I noticed how many bugs I'd fixed (not just resolved!) on Mantis. Of course the next thing to do was to check what the total was and how the other coders stacked up. The interesting thing I found is that Taylor has fixed almost exactly half of all the bugs ever fixed on Mantis. Out of a grand total of 747 bugs fixed here are the top 5 coders (I would have made it top 10 but we probably don't have that many active coders. )

Taylor                           373
Goober                          114
Phreak                            59
WMCoolmon                     51
Karajorma                        43

To put it another way, if Taylor fixes one more bug he can legitimately say he's fixed more bugs than the rest of us put together so I think a round of applause is in order.

Remember that this is only the stuff that makes it to Mantis. A large number of bugs are fixed before that. Quite often a coder will spot an error, fix it and then carry on with whatever they were doing. That said, it's still a good yardstick for how much work people have done stabilising the code.

Meanwhile I'm off to Mantis to fix something. :p

Good work to all of you! The work you've done on the SCP never ceases to amaze me.

Actually a few of the fixed-closed bugs aren't actually fixed and were just marked that way incorrectly, and a few of them were fixed by me but never assigned to me (I got tired of fixing all that stuff and gave up on it last year).

So, the count is just slightly over 50% (of Mantis bugs anyway, I've fixed about twice that number which never hit Mantis). :D

Does he get double points if it's a Volition bug? ;)

Hope not.  I've fixed far too many :v: bugs for that to be even remotely fair. ;)

IIRC more of the bugs I've fixed this year have been :v: bugs than not. So I agree it wouldn't be fair. :)

Did you count -fixbugs? Even though that broke backwards compatibility :p

A toast:

Ummm....he has.

Also, taylor, do you get payed to do this?

Nope.  I learned to code in order to work on Freespace2 (the icculus.org project), and though I've worked on quite a few projects since, I've never been paid for any programming work.  I could probably get a programming job at this point, but in my experience having only "self-taught" on your resume doesn't really go over that well these days. ;)

Apply for an exam, in my country - and probably your's too - one can take an examine without actually going to school and getting grades. I did this with doing my sysadmin certification. I know there are exams for programming too.

All the benefits of showing a "high school degree"....or "technical certificate" with a fraction of the hassle.

That or find someone who knows your competency to contract you, and then get more work by word of mouth.  My friend Andrew worked for his dad out of high school and hasn't had a shortage of work offers since, and that was 6 years ago.
