check this out
http://pc.gamezone.com/gamesell/screens/s32402.htm
looks similar to something, cant place my finger on it. ;7
wana cut there :headz: off.

Heh, to be fair, it's kind of hard to write a space-combat game without it looking like a Space Combat game, Freespace had elements that were similar to both Wing Commander and X-Wing, which themselves had elements from Star Raider and other older games. No doubt that trend will carry on through.
-
I see no similarity other than the fact that it uses the standard HUD interface just about every modern space sim uses.
-
Let's see. There's space. There are ships. There are lazors. There is a HUD. Missiles leave trails. Yup. Definitely a FreeSpace ripoff.
(Psst. I was being sarcastic.)
-
This is the same as 100 other simulator games
-
You'd have an easier time arguing that this (http://www.subsim.com/sh4/silent_hunter4.php) is a ripoff of this (http://www.subsim.com/ssr/service2.html). I mean, they're in the same setting, using the same weapons, same units, etc., etc., etc.
-
Silent Service was, in my opinion, a far better game, however :)
-
Well of course it was. It was made by MicroProse, who were without question the kings of sims :) I miss MicroProse...
-
This barely qualifies as "similar" IMO...
-
Personally, I don't give a **** who this game rips off, as long as it's fun.
They could have beamzorz and three-legged black and red aliens with lazors on their headz that blow up stars for all I care, as long as it's still fun.
I miss MicroProse...
Me too :(
-
Yay, new space flight sim game. Hopefully it doesn't suck.
-
Wow, you're right, this is exactly like FreeSpace! The planetary terrain and cloud effects look exactly the same! I bet they even stole the cockpit textures too!
-
When are people going to learn that FreeSpace wasn't revolutionary, it wasn't innovative, it was just damn good at what it did. It wasn't any different from other space sims, it just did it better than most.
-
This looks ****ty. I mean really cheesy looking.
-
And before Microprose was Microprose, it was Spectrum Holobyte, and they still kicked ass at sims. I know because I played their Top Gun: Fire At Will title quite a bit. I never did get past Top Gun school though, for trying so desperately to make sure I got Top Gun honors. Still, flying a Tomcat in that game kicked ass. I wish I could get a real F-14 to play with.
-
Spectrum Holobyte
This company also made some of my favorite early 3D racing games, Vette and Stunt Driver. Vette in particular was extremely advanced for its time, both in terms of the graphics as well as the open, nonlinear game world, and I spent years playing it.
-
Haha.
That has NOTHING on Tachyon!
-
yeah...they are all alike... but I can't get sattisfied...
is like the only game that really got to me is freespace, and I would have a remake of this one rather a new one.
Dont ask, I just like this one, might be the story behind it... or just that it was the first spacesim I've ever played, and I bought it out right away.
-
This always happens. The best game of a genre makes all the others copycats, regardless of who came first or who copied who.
-
think of it this way: How can you get more original then flying through space and blowing **** up without floating away from the genre?

Look at the damn interface of Tachyon.
EVERYTHING is in the same spot as Freespace.
Hell, they also have the energy modifications to guns, shields, and thrusters...
Oh, and btw, those use the same keys as Freespace 2...

So Tachyon maybe copied stuff from FreeSpace, which in turn copied stuff from the X-Wing and TIE Fighter games as well as Wing Commanders. What's with all the fuss? FPS games are the same thing. It's hard to not "copy" things without derailing from the genre itself.
-
Besides, would you rather have them impliment some awkward control scheme and place the HUD elements upside down and inverted? There`s no real reason to tweak what doesn`t need to be fixed.
-
If it ain't broken, don't fix it.
I'm going to start making firearms. Only my triggers are going to be on TOP of the gun. I don't want to copy what everyone else has done.
Crap...then I'd be copying a crossbow...
-
Whatever, so the HUD looks similar, so the keys are the same. Would you rather the keys for each game were different so in the middle of a dogfight you hit the wrong key at a critical time? as others have said, space flight sims are pretty much all the same on many levels. What separates them from one another are the stories.
Look at FPS shooters. They basically break down into like two story lines:
1. Fighting demons (Doom, Painkiller, Heretic)
2. Fighting aliens (Halo, Half Life, Duke Nukem, PREY)
Occasionally you'll also have 3. Fighting bad marines (FEAR, Half Life)
Many have pretty similar storylines, Half Life is a lot like Doom except the experiments result in Aliens instead of Demons.
I mean, whatever. People are bemoaning the death of space Flight sim games and then when a new one comes around everyone instantly hates it because it seems to copy some previous game they enjoyed. Maybe that's why the genre more/less died off in the first place and continues to remain on lifesupport for the most part.
-
That's like saying that you can't make an action movie with a storyline because putting a good story in would deviate too far from the genre.
EDIT: That was in response to Haloboy's post, I didn't realize there was a page 2 =P
-
No, they hate new space sims because of their quality.

No, they hate new space sims because of their quality.
And that explains why people hate this game before they've even played it?
-
Let them eat cake. Without new development the genre will stagnate. I for one welcome every new game of any kind as denying any kind of creativity (or homage to a precursor) would result in us eventually having to rely on the old "hoop and stick" method of entertainment. Which would suck.

FIFA 08 is a COMPLETE RIP-OFF of Pro Evolution Soccer 6

FreeSpace is a rip-off of battlecruiser millenium. . .:nervous: "He" should sue :v:.

Darek Smart?

There are people who make a living out of that. Forgot what they were called. It was like, "lawyers" or something.

a primitive race...though highly aggressive if agitated.
