Title: Do I suck or is this normal?
Post by: Spacemutiny on June 30, 2008, 02:54:55 pm
I've been playing games for years and I think I'm pretty good at them, but I've been humbled by Freespace 2.  The specific mission is number 6, called "The Romans Blunder".  I have the game set at hard difficulty.  The first wave of enemies are two frigate like ships and two wings of fighters.  Those I can take care of with my wingmen.  The problem is with the next wave.  There are two capital ships with anti-fighter guns and two wings of fighters.  It says to lure the fighters out so that they guns can't get you, but the AI, even when I tell it to form up on me, goes on the attack.  They get chewed up in about 15 seconds, leaving me with at least 5 fighters to take care of.  I don't know if its the difficutly, but they pounce on me and their guns do so much damage I'm dead in less than a minute.  I've tried this mission like 15 times and I just can't do it.

I may just really suck, but does the hard difficulty give the enemy extra firepower? because it seems like their weapons just do an insane amount of damage.

No, Hard difficulty makes your player ship have less health than easier difficulties. That's all.

Umm, wasn't it actually so that lower difficulty levels weaken the weapons used by the enemies. On the harder levels (at least Insane), the non-player ships carry weapons that are as powerful as the ones the player uses.

Lowering the difficulty reduces the amount of damage that is done to the player, as well as reducing the AI's maneuverability.  It has no effect on how much damage AI weapons do to other AI ships.

Nothing really to say other than the fact that you've gotta try harder.

Many of us went through it, so it is doable.

The way I remember that mission was to order one of the wingmen to attack an enemy fighter, and then I watch the enemy fighter focus attention on my wingman. As soon as he turns towards my wingman, I recall the wingman to form up on me, and then as the fighter (and his buddies come closer) I c31 on the lured sap, and essentially take them all down that way, being quite far from the cruisers.

Note, your wingmen will only attack if they're doing nothing. Which means you have to keep moving so that they have something to do (fly towards you) and thereby obey your command. If they form up on you and stand still for a second, the check for forming up on you clears, and then they decide to do something else, seeing how they've completed doing what you've ordered them.

Ah. Guess I remembered wrong.

Unlike a lot of games today, Freespace is one where you can't really coast through it and pass every mission on the first try. The one you're talking about isn't familiar, but just wait til you get to "Feint! Parry! Riposte!" that one, is a real ***** to get past for me. Sounds similar to the one you're playing now.

Feint! Parry! Riposte! is more or less a harder version of this one.

In "Feint! Parry! Riposte!" what I do is order everyone to protect the Rampart right when the mission starts. The first wing of Hercs automatically comes at you, so just retreat to the Fenris to take advantage of its antifighter cover. After that, I leave everyone at the Rampart and go lure the remaining Hercs from the cruisers myself. Once you get their attention, just put everything you`ve got into the engines and run away to the Rampart. They`ll follow you right over. From there the mission gets considerably easier.

The AI seems to do better if you tell them to "Engage enemy" than if you tell them to cover you.

The AI does best if you tell them to "attack that target". You have to micromanage though.

I've fairly recently found it useful to take advantage of the "wing" hotkeys. It targets one of a wing in green/red/whatever and the rest in white. When you're micromanaging, it helps you gain a better sense of situational awareness to see where everyone is.

I'd also leave my wingmates behind when it comes to luring the fighter coverage. Max engines, fire off a few shots to get their attention, hopefully get the Command message confirmation as you're turning, burn back to the rampart and tell everyone to attack the hostiles fighters once they close with the rampart.

The clue is in the name. you guys do know what a rampart is don't you ?

The Leviathan, or the Leviathan with three wings of fighters escorting it? :drevil:

I've tried playing Very Hard once; died within a minute. Although it's good practice for multiplayer, in my opinion.

Yeah it's that game where you build a castle and some pirate ships come and attack you right?

Uh. The rampart is the part of a castle from which archers fire arrows down at invaders, isn't it?

Stormkeeper's right. so it make's sense that the Rampart snipes its beams at the 'invaders'

The NTF fighters...

.... Although, technically speaking, the GTVA fighters were the invaders ...

What difficulty do most people play FS2 in, anyway? I'm perpetually stuck on Very Easy. :nervous:

Easy for me. I used to play at normal, then I met this mission.

I played the main campaign on Medium, but I got stuck at the very last mission. Most user-made campaigns are slightly more difficult, however.

You are not the only one. I beat the entire FS2 campaign on hard except for this mission that you specify. It is beyond me why this is happening but I get owned by the cruisers while I hope to kill the last 2 Lokis. In the end after failing something like 50 times I decided to skip... On normal difficulty this mission was a single try... Hell i beat "Feint, Parry, Riposte!" on my first try on hard... My theory is that difference is caused by the lowered player health but also by the fact that on hard the Lokis link their Subachs and therefore do greater damage.

I for one have to lessen my skill by half when I'm in a Myrmidon.  That ship is just such an utter piece of junk for me... it's the primary reason keeping me away from playing on insane that I would have fly it again.

I`ve been playing in Easy for years. But I`ve recently made the jump to *gasp!* Normal.

I've beaten the game a few times on normal/medium/whatever. I forget how far I got on hard when I tried it, but I can remember that it was frustrating. FS2 doesn't load fast enough for me to keep trying.

Usually I play on Insane. To get used to the trackpad, I decided to give myself a break and play on Hard.

Anyway--for the mission you speak of--I do something a few others do as well. I order all wingmen to protect the Rampart and lure in the enemies--keep out of range, boost engines to max, and they'll follow you most of the time. Even closing too close, you will likely get in range of cruisers before the fighters (on Coward AI!!) will give chase. They chase, you fly past the Rampart, dive about 30-50 degrees (so to not be hit by NTF's beams), and then keep going for 3-5km.

The mission is hard to do--but you have to do it. Usually drawing the AI out of cover is best--and then you can use Harpoons or something to finish them off. Just don't forget that you can use your own ships too for cover.

I've tried to play it once on each level of difficulty, but I find the latter half of the campaign impossible then on Insane. User-made campaigns tend to get impossible on anything more than Medium, and usually I play them at Easy or Very Easy because I don't trust you all to know how to balance something. :P

Balancing a mission is very difficult. I've tried remaking Slaying Ravana once, and it was completely unbalanced. On the lower difficulty levels, the Ravana gets minced. On the higher difficulty levels, the Psamtik and Aquitaine, as well as their cruiser and corvette complement, get minced.

...by the way, did you change your username?

I usually play on medium or hard. I prefer to push it and do hard, but on some user campaigns it's just not worth it to play the same mission over again six times. :p

I don't have the patience to play games on very hard/impossible/insane etc anymore. I think the last game I 100% finished was either Goldeneye (all cheats opened up) or GranTurismo (all gold on all 3 licence tests, boy that sucked). I usually play on normal nowadays.

Though I did SystemShock2 on impossible and it wasn't so hard.

Personally I can't really play on anything else than Insane, except when I'm doing OTHER stuff (like BWO). The game feels WEAK on all difficulties other than insane. Not that I mean because it's easy. It's just that there's no "oomph". Capitols weapons are weaker, and everyone in general is a pussy. When I see beams flying, I want them to do massive damage to the enemy's weak point.

Best example of that is the Colo v Satha. It takes foreverrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr on the normal difficulties. At least that's how I remember it. Haven't tried it in about seven years, every run since then has been Insane.

Why don't you call in a supply ship and do bombing runs on the juggernaut, then? You'll get a kill for that, and it's quite...interesting...to have an SJ Sathanas in your kill count. :drevil:

you can get the sath kill by ordering your wingmen to depart, and firing one round of Mehkus at it. Yes. One shot. All the colly sprouts is beams, so you do 100% of the non-beam damage XD

Stil it was fun spamming BFReds at the Sathy. Made the mission fast.
