Title: What a nice surprise i got today :)
Post by: Colonol Dekker on July 04, 2008, 07:26:32 am
I just got back from the Gym.
While i was there, i ran into an old mate from school who now works in graphic design. Turns out he lives round the corner from me and he dropped off an old copy of max9. ;D Imagine my joy.
Well i installed it on Vista and it went fine but the dang thing won't run. :( I just get the "encountered an error" error.
Has anyone else experienced this?

You lucky bastard... No, afraid I wouldn't know, since I would likely sooner switch to mac than use vista...

I've tried compatibility to a point, (2000 upwards) I'll have a go at earleier versions, but i'm out on the tiles tonight so i may not actually get time to play with it if indeed it workrs.

In the meantime heres some info for the more savvy people :D

Looks to me that there's somehing wrong with your ntdll library. Have you tried asking on the 3Dsmax forums (if any)?

You lucky bastard... No, afraid I wouldn't know, since I would likely sooner switch to mac than use vista...

Why?

So far the only bad thing I've found in Vista is the user control - which you can turn off.  The eye candy can also be turned off.  My copy of Vista looks exactly like XP Pro did for me (which is to say, much like Windows 98) only with the functionality and stability of an OS developed from the NT/2000 family.

While they moved the access to a couple minor settings around, the OS in general is a decent improvement from XP if you turn off the crap aimed at inexperienced users.  So far, the only real trouble I've had is severe slowdowns/lag of the mouse on Splinter Cell Pandora Tomorrow's menus, and Homeworld 2 continually *****ing about my video drivers.  Oh, and a minor networking issue that was more to do with my unfamiliarity with the new interface than an actual problem with the system.

Did you make it run as administrator?  Allot of software quite unnecessarily require themselves to be administrators.  In Vista the OS has been changed to run software at a lower level unless otherwise specified.  Yes this looks like Vista is being a pain but really its the other way around and its the softwares fault (if this is the particular problem here).  What MS should have done was make it run like this years ago...Unix/Linux has been like this for ages.

Try Windows XP SP2 + Run as Administrator.  That might do the trick.
