Well, its definitely been a while since i posted. Anyway, My computer crashed a while ago so I lost all my relevant files for my last ship. This takes my crazy cross breed fighter to yet another angle. i decided make the main hull a cross between a mark one or two Arwing and and MK II viper. Instead of the original design that added G-diffusers, I added a pair of engines/wings/cannons based on the mk ii viper. If anyone is feeling generous in helping a newbie out (am still a noob despite a long time of trying to learn), It still needs shields and textures. Any help is appreciated. The rar has both the pof and cob files.

No one here will, unless its for a mod. Trust me, I learned that the hard way
-
Actually, I've been helped before. I just took a while. On another note, I think i figured out how to get a single color texture on my ship. It shows up in pcs2 and everything. Now to try and get it in game....Currently running retail of both Freespace and Freespace 2. I have updated the the pof file with a texture. It still needs shields, and to get it ingame. Please redownload the rar to get the texture and new pof.
-
This is the viper thing I worked on before...
Transfer the data from the old pof to the new one (I thought I shielded it?)...
Oh crap, just remembered you said comp crashed...
I'm on vacation and pretty much planned out what I'm doing next week and a half... Sorry.
-
actually it isn't. The old one had a pair of g-diffusers from on arwing. i modeled this one more along the lines of the bsg blackbird. I actually find that using similarily styled hulls makes it easier to model. anywho, thanks for your help before. I'll see if i can find the old one on the forums somewhere...get the feeling its hiding. If i find it the only thing it will need is a decent paint job. thanks robo, i forgot that the old one was here somewhere.
-EDIT- Found the old one on the forums. at least my modeling skills have improved a little... :p anyway, i'll download it and bring in the goodies when i get home. anyway, if anyone wants to see the old one the link is http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,53762.0.html
-
Well, i did my import in pcs2. currently trying to get it ingame. am also trying to get detailed textures....not sure how to do this yet. I'll post the updated files later.
-EDIT- Ship is IN GAME!!! The only thing left is a paint job. I have posted a new rar called starfighter.rar witha copy of my model and map folders. Inside is the ship and a couple textures. If anyone feels generous, could you help me with a paint job? Mine never seem to turn out right. You'll see what i mean when you look at it.

This thing reminds me of a SF Basalisk.
-
I didn't even think of that...now that you mention it...yeah it does slightly resemble it.
-
I've finally figured out how to texture, and I'm decent with photoshop, Maybe tomorrow (it's late at night here, and i have work in the morning) I'll take a look and see what I can do as far as paint jobs go... I use blender for modeling/rendering so if you have a version i can import there for test purposes it'll make it easier for me to help.
-
I've actually never used blender.....does it work in cob format? all i have is truespace 3.2. Anyway, the cob files are in an earlier post in this thread. i'm actually not sure how to change them to anything other than pof's for game use.
-

It is easier to get a ship into FSO, from what I hear.
-
never tried to mod FSO. In fact, i don't even have it. I have the retail version. I might try installing the upgrade tonight and take a peek. anyway, tried to give it a paint job again.....i swear it hates me.
-
Just get the reccomended 3.6.10 build in my sig, and you're done. You need Launcher 5.5d, also in my sig. Done. Only 5 mb.
-
Is it UVMapped properly?
If it is, I might try and do some kind of texture on it. If you send the model and perhaps an outlined UVMap of the parts, I'll see what I can manage to do... with no obligations though, I might not find the time for it anytime soon. :nervous:
-
I'm honestly not sure how its uv mapped. I tried to use LithUnwrap and Ultimate unwrap to do it. the pof file shows texture in modelview and pcs2...but its all off. I honestly have no clue how to do it. I have tried planar, box, and cylinder mapping but can't figure out what i'm doing wrong. Everything for the model and pof is in the previous posts. If you think u might be able to do it, more power to ya. I can model okay...but uv and texture is completely beyond me.
-
tomorrow I'm devoting my day to making new models/textures, so I'll download the .cob, find a way to import it, [if necessary] UVmap it, and re-do the paint job. All of this relies on my being sober though.
-
I'll load it up and make sure the model to good. here's the updated cob. Its basically the same thing...just edited the shield mesh a bit....i thnk. Thanks a ton. The only things i sem to be decent at are modeling, setting up hardpoints, eyepoints and thrusters. Textures, uv maps, fredding...not so good, more like none existent skills. again, thanks a lot

I've spent the last couple hours working on texturing one of my new models. I downloaded your model, but I'll wait until morning to convert, UVmap, and Texture it... It's almost 3am where I live. Do you have any particular paint job in mind for when I wake up?
-
When i designed the original, i wanted to make a ship that would be easily recognizable to several groups. In particular, Star Fox and Galactica fans. I really don't have a preference, but i did have an idea. The primary paint scheme would be derived from battlestar galactica....you know, the red stripe thing. but then it needed to have that starfox feel too. So i figured the two outboard engine pods (it has three engines) would be a shade of blue, like the G-Diffusers on the arwings. other than that...i'd say surprise us. I always have an appreciation of how other people do things. Heck, i saw a mod for nexus that aws almost the same thing that i did (simple stuff) but the way they did it was a heck of a lot cooler. All in all, i say have fun. :D
-
First WIP texture, this still needs a lot of work, but I wanted to make sure I'm getting at least the basic paint job concept. More details will be added and the texture will be cleaned up once I hear back from skygunner.
-
looking good so far. what sort of input were you looking for? :p
-
I was wondering if there were any specifics other than blue engines and the BSG style stripes. I was considering a blue mechanical texture over most of the body, though it would be more subdued over the main fuselage where the stripe is. Any Emblems, Decals, Insignia, etc. you want on there?
-
hmm...that is a tricky question. well, for a unit insignia i posted an image below. I am thinking some dirt/grime/carbon scoring...you know, make it look like its seen action. and under the cockpit could be a callsign if possible. I'd have to say I'm no good at those...thinking of them, that is. I'd say angel for a callsign. that would be about it, i think
[attachment deleted by admin]
-
I'm working on a much cleaner texture as we speak. I'm doing it piece by piece rather than the whole mesh at once. In the process of converting the file to blender I ended up removing the shield mesh as it caused some issues. The new texture is about 30% done, and I can add a callsign if you want, I just need to know if it will be in front of the cockpit, or on the side of the fuselage?
-
definitely on the side. Means its easier to read. and now that i've had a few minutes to think on it ANGEL is the callsign of choice. thanks again

2nd WIP - To Do: Wings and main engine thruster thing need to be recolored, battle marks, dirt, possibly rust need to be added, Insignia, maybe more stripes
-
:jaw: holy frak.... that is awesome. Have you ever considered trying to write a texture tutorial? That is simply amazing.
-
(http://i192.photobucket.com/albums/z98/twaysan/StarFighter2.jpg)
WIP3
To Do: weapon colors, color recessed areas, dirt/battle damage, other
-
Okay...probably a dumb question. What program are you using to texture and model? Cuz i'd like to try it out sometime. It looks awesome. Also, just had a thought. Is there a way to make it look like a glowing intake...like there's fusion or something going on inside? just asking.
-
Modeling: Blender
Texturing: Photoshop CS2
As for the glowing intakes, I can do it, but it'll take me a while (I'm still learning how to do glows). I haven't even begun to texture the intakes and thruster exhausts.
I just learned how to texture yesterday, so most of what I'm doing is still new to me. It's just about 2am local time, so I'm about an hour away from the point where I can't focus without a lot of caffeine. I'm gonna do some burn marks, maybe texture the intakes, but glows will have to wait until I've gotten some sleep.
-
that's fine...2am huh? wow... its only 7PM here. I live in North Dakota, USA. Well, i say get some sleep man. Glows aren't important, they were just an afterthought. And you learned this in a day? Good grief, now i know i'm hopeless on textures. :eek2:
-
Looks sorta like a Viper from BSG.
-
It is based somewhat on one. I give you the result of a viper and an arwing breeding.
-
While waiting for Twayson to work his magic, i've decided that i can start working on other models. I'll post new models here when i get the chance.
-
I'm still working on the final details, i had a bit of a "user error"... During the process of making grease stains and the like, i accidentally saved over one of the files used for the base texture, so im currently redoing the left wing's texture. And I'd love to work on some of your other models, I go stateside on the 16th so I may not have internet, but i'll have my computer (the joys of a laptop)
-
That's pretty cool and thanks for the offer, be a pleasure working with you. Anyway, i'll have some new models of sorts up shortly, give you something to do, eh? anyway, don't worry about any holdups. Stuff happens, just gotta learn from it. Heck, i'm learning to FRED my own missions right now. Its actually pretty fun and easy once you get the hang of it.
-
Base texture is about 90%, dirt and battle scars need to be added, as do glows. A shot from head on to the demonstrate the Reaction of the engines
(http://i192.photobucket.com/albums/z98/twaysan/Render3.jpg)
-
That is sweet. I'm about half done on a new model. Also, what format are the textures in...just to ask
-
JPEG, each one is about 512px X 512px, though i can easily reduce that to make life easier on your computer, i just use multiple textures to it's easier to manage. once i finish the textures i'll reconvert it into .cob or whatever format you want the finished one in... im not sure how the textures will translate though, so i may export straight to .pof
-
95% 2 renders this time, to show off the engines, I recolored the front engines so that they make more sense when compared with the back
(http://i192.photobucket.com/albums/z98/twaysan/Render4.jpg)
-
probably best to give one of each(cob and pof) as we don't know how the textures will turn out for each...jpeg will work for the texture format, had to check and see what SCP can handle as i didn't know what it supports. I gotta say tho...scp is freaking awesome. And the new renders look awesome as well.
-
Now with a simple shield mesh:
To Do: battle damage, glows
-
that is freaking nuts......ur just churning this stuff out like clockwork. well, i have my next model almost done. I'll probably post it later tonite
-
that is freaking nuts......ur just churning this stuff out like clockwork. well, i have my next model almost done. I'll probably post it later tonite
that's because i've been off work for the last 2 days, but it helps that i can take my laptop with me and work on this wherever i go (except work, i work in the food service industry). I have to leave for work in about 9 hours so i'm off to bed for the night (0109 GMT +1, Germany) around 1pm (whatever timezone you're in) i should be back and be working on the next update which will likely be battle damage. I'm looking forward to seeing what other kinds of models you'll produce.
-
here is the next fighter, its a heavy fighter. I'll have an anti capship version out shortly.
-
ok, im home from work, this new model looks like it'll be fun to texture, once again, any specific scheme you want?
-
More of a Terran Military scheme. Its kinda based on the GTF Hercules fighter. Its in the opening cutscene for FS2...the one that gets shot down by the shivan fighter. BTW, how goes the battle damage and glows?
-
battle damage is going, not ready for an update yet, I'm cheating a little on adding the new texture (instead of adding a new one, i'm using the existing filename so it auto loads the new texture, but im backing up the textures as i go) I'm currently doing a basic texture for this heavy fighter, i was gonna go with a gun metal gray base and the vertical wings red, but it may look to shivan. Updates on battle damage to come within a couple hours, glows in *looks at watch* however long it takes to figure out proper glows.
-
LOL, hey its better than what i can do. I'll have another model or two done soon. One is a variant of the heavy fighter, the other is my rendition of a "Tech-Wing" fighter (see picture)
-
battle damage update within about 20 minutes, main fuselage damage is almost where i want it, wings and engines to follow shortly

Battle damage WIP 2

Status: Damage 75%, Glows 0% (still figuring these out)

Final damage model... maybe
(http://i192.photobucket.com/albums/z98/twaysan/DMG3.jpg)
-
Looks good to me. I can see the shivans now..."RUN FOR YOUR LIVES...DEMON!!!!!" sorry...been playing too much halo
-
I've started work on texturing the heavy fighter, base color looks very shivan, maybe a little too dark...
-
Just a bit. Looks like a stealth version...or shivan. Probably should go lighter else none of us will see it. :D
-
lighter version, red wings are a placeholder texture until i get around to something better
(http://i192.photobucket.com/albums/z98/twaysan/WIP2.jpg)
-
i forgot to re add something to the other fighter's texture... here it is, maybe bigger than necessary, but it's there again
(http://i192.photobucket.com/albums/z98/twaysan/final.jpg)
-
I like, I like. for the final tho, make the lettering about half that size. anyway, on the Tech-wing, i have just finished modeling the cockpit area back to where it meets the main body.
Also to anyone else who reads this....i have a turret question for a mod i'm working on now. The barrels stick straight up in modelview and pcs2. How do i get them to lie down like them should?
-
now with smaller lettering
(http://i192.photobucket.com/albums/z98/twaysan/final2.jpg)
as for the heavy fighter, those screens will be updated less often as i want it to be a surprise. What i will say, is that there are likely going to be multiple paint jobs by the time i'm done
-
Very nice. I should have yet another model up by tonite (local time GMT-6, USA). Anyway, go ahead and surprise me on the heavy fighter. I like surprises.
-
Yay! creative freedom, anyway the first paint job is only at about 5%, a friend of mine came over for a couple beers, and now it's time for me to go to bed (i have work in 10 hours), after work tomorrow i should be able to post the first paint job within a couple hours
-
All right, well let me know when the first ship is finished. It doesn't need a shield mesh, i figured out those just recently. have fun at work...and a beer sounds nice right bout now........
-
Due to my insomnia i've got the first paint job for the heavy fighter at about 50%. as for the first ship, the normal map is done, glows and shines will take a while since i havent done them before. I can give you the normal mapped version, i just have to export it (after removing the shield mesh) and hope it works after the conversion process.
First paint job:
-
holy crap...you surprised me alright. But yeah it doesn't really need the glow and shine, but its nice to have. whenever you feel like posting it is up to you...crap, boss is coming...gotta go
-
Also to anyone else who reads this....i have a turret question for a mod i'm working on now. The barrels stick straight up in modelview and pcs2. How do i get them to lie down like them should?
There is a way to do it via a small bit of script work. Script gurus live here http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?board=145.0 (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?board=145.0)
@Twaysan
A glow map is just a black texture map. Anything painted on it doesn't get affected by lighting/shade which gives the appearance of glowing.
-
is it a good surprise or a bad surprise? as for glow maps, i'll have to try that in a little while, after i get myself some dinner
-
Good surprise. i like it. still working on the next model.
-
Due to slightly excessive drinking, this paint job took longer than originally planned...
-
Well, i must say you'll find no complaints here. So how goes the other one?
-
the other ship? or the other paint job? the other ship's glows are annoying me, but im finally starting to grasp the concept... the texture is currently in about 7 pieces so i might want to pack it into one image. I'm toying with a third paint job for this fighter, but so far it's not anything noteworthy.
-
That's cool. I'll tell you one thing tho, once you get the hang of glows and the like, you'll be beating mod teams off with a bat.
-
Hey, sorry I haven't updated anything in a while, I've been pretty busy as of late, and now I'm in Ohio, spending time with my uncle and grandmother. When I get any downtime I'll work on updates, but for the next couple weeks they'll come few and far between. The good news is that on the 9 hour flight from Frankfurt Intl to Chicago O'hare I figured out a way to become more efficient, the results of which will be seen in my next update. Last but certainly not least, I was wondering if you'd be interested in helping out with a mod Idea I've been thinking about. It's basically a Sol system mod from the early days of space combat, before jump nodes, shields, vasudans, any of that. I've actually put together a couple basic models designed to look like they were flown in the late 21st - early 22nd century.
-
I don't mind. Let me know when you want to start. I am still learning my modeling skills :P
-
Sorry this one took so long, It's only in the basic coloring phase, but it's an update so you know I'm still alive:
-
Another one:
-
hell, you keep putting out this kind of work i'll start thinking about saying "screw the glow and shine maps, Post em up" :D
-
This new one is actually a single texture, and will be repackage-able soon, the first ship's texture is in many pieces and will take a while to merge together before it's ready to upload
-
thats cool, my computer decided to take a crap this week. Needed a new HDD and everything. So i've lost pretty much everything. As it stands, i have to start over on both my ships as well as redownload the data files for the mod i'm working on. I sincerely hope i don't burn through another HDD.
-
Next week I begin the process of upgrading my laptop (new HDD, more RAM, new video card, new case) so I'm gonna have to begin backing up crucial data. Since the last update I posted I've almost finished a new model for my mod. I fly to Minnesota tomorrow evening, and I'm not sure if I'll have internet access where I'm staying, so I may disappear for a while. Minnesota is pretty boring so I should have more time to work on texturing while I'm there.
-
Where abouts in minnesota? I live in north dakota
-
uh... not exactly sure, somewhere within 50 miles of Minneapolis. My mom's sister lives there, so I don't really pay much attention to where it is. I fly out there in about 11 hours
-
Hey, I'm still not home, but I'm back in Ohio where I actually have internet access. I wish I could say I had some new progress to report, or at least a model converted into pof, but I cant get PCS2 to work on my computer. I think I've got the texture for your viper/arwing recompiled (i cheated and used a blender script to just combine the images) but due to my lack of other available modeling tools, coupled with PCS2 not displaying any model i put into it has made it impossible to test for compatibility.
-
So instead of dealing with the frustration of an unknown cause have you "considered" trying PCS1 or MV just to be sure it's not the model? *hint*
-
coupled with PCS2 not displaying any model i put into it has made it impossible to test for compatibility.
Go to options, type in .\ and hit add.
Basically it adds the directory the pof is in to the texture search path. That way you can put the pof and textures in the same directory any where on the hard drive. Makes it simpler for testing stuff.
-
wow...i've been gone a while....Anywho, if your having trouble pofing it, its no big deal. I have finally gotten my computer back up and running with truespace 3.2 and 7.6, as well as both pcs programs. Now to redownload my own models and contact the other members of my own mod team.
-
i just installed truespace 7.6, and upgraded my RAM, sometime thursday when i have time i'll get back to work on texturing
-
Where abouts in minnesota? I live in north dakota
Ahh another N.D. :D
-
Sorry I haven't posted anything in a while, I've been playing bioshock and UT3. Now that I've beaten bioshock I've got some new inspiration for textures, much more detail than before, and longer turnaround time, but hopefully once i put up some screens it will be worth the wait. I was wondering if you were planning any large ships?
-
one or two are planned...but i have no idea where to start. Got blueprints drawn out and everything. Still have no viable fix for my computer issues (at parents house right now). However i should have a working pc again soon. I may have posted b4 about having a working pc....disregard please.
-
I know how frustrating PC issues are, especially while not at home. My laptop crashed stateside (fortunately i had just bought and backed up to a new external) I just hope you get your computer up and running. Whats the problem? I may be able to help, I'm actually a trained computer technician (i make pizza because it pays well, and there arent many other open jobs).
As far as my newer more detailed texturing, the first one involves glowing blue "veins" with a sort of tear between the veins and the hull. Hard as hell to explain, but given the right time and resources it should look pretty impressive.
-
thanks for the offer of help, i do a lot of repair work in my free time (side job). anywho, its just a part failure. waiting on my new pegasus computer from raptor pcs
-
In a fit of insanity, i have bumped my own thread. I have FINALLY got a viable fix for my computer as my Pegasus compy from raptor isn't ready yet (waiting on an OS disk still). Unfortunately i need to find my files so i can restart my little project. Twaysan, if you see this i'd like to know if A: you still have the files? and B: Are they textured? I have started an attempt on a cap ship but truespace 3.2 and 7.6 leave much to be desired. I am now working on attempting to learn blender.
If ANYONE has textured versions of my old craft i'd be greatly appreciative if they could be posted or sent to me.
Thanks
-
hey, just got over computer issues of my own... Vista went caput... Upped my HDD just found an adaptor for my old one... I have the files, the textures previously displayed still exist, but i need to find them all... I'll send them to you once i dig through my old drive and locate them... Sorry I havent been around, but my system is back up and running at 95% after a couple months of trying to configure it to work with an OS it wasnt meant to support. I've learned my lesson though, i now have a total of 4 hard drives, each one with an OS installed and configured (two Oses on my primary drive) and triple backups of all my files.
I'm still willing to help out with texturing, but my progress will be drastically slower since i now have a side job and a Certification to study for.
-
Well, at least you managed to kill ur computer gremlins. If you can find those files it would be great. i really don't wanna try and start over. and yes if your still willing to texture i will create models for you.
-
I've managed to find all of the model files... The textures however seem to have been messed up during my multiple hardware swaps. I'll upload the models shortly. I still have the original pieces of the textures, but I need to put them back together. The textures will be uploaded as soon as I manage to get photoshop running again and stitch them back together.
Edit: Models uploaded in three formats: the original format, and the Blender files, the third version is just the transition format i used in my converter.
