I've seen this done on several communities...
we pick a character. say... "HLP Gary". a little G.I. Joe or something. Then we compile a list of people willing to play this game.
The way it works is you say if you're willing to participate. After a week, I compile a list of ~20-25 names. Say I start... I take a dozen or so pictures of "HLP Gary" doing things. Like, I could take a picture of him on the dash of my car, a picture of him watching me type a message on HLP, a picture of him sitting in front of Space Center Houston (NASA), etc. Then after a day or so, I post the pictures, and then mail him to the NEXT person on the list (i PM that person for an address). He's light, so you put him in an envelope, and it'll be real cheap to mail.
The next person gets him, takes pictures of him doing whatever, and then after a day or two with him, mails him to the NEXT person.
The pictures they take, they post in a particular thread. The thread stays 100% on-topic... there's ANOTHER thread for DISCUSSING what happens in the picture thread. Anyone who posts something off-topic (i.e. anything but pictures) in the picture thread, gets their post deleted by a moderator. Thus the thread is forced to stay on-topic.
What think? It sounds dumb, but i've seen this done on at least one other community, and it's worked out pretty well... it's a lot of fun :p
-
I have one question regarding the entire practice: Why? :wtf:
-
That would be pretty cool !
@ BloodEagle - because, now lighten up! :p
-
Count me in!
-
I'm happy to keep an eye on the threads if it gets going and make sure no-one goes off topic :)
-
There's no way I'd be able to do this, just cause I live on the other end of the planet. T_T
-
its called mail service. of course everyone would have to pay postage.
my only request is that his uniform has a proper hlp insignia :D
-
Yea, snail mails would take forever to go back and forth, but if you guys don't mind the lag time, then I'm in!
-
nonsense. inter-continental takes 2-3 days tops. and i send packages to Norway all the time, and it takes them around 5-7 days tops...
and as far as the "why do it?" question - ..... why post here. what are you gaining from it. see where i'm coming from? ;)
-
Well. I live in Singapore. Pretty far from the US, imo.
This is just for the fun of it. Plain, simple fun. Plus a sneak into the lives of the HLP members. :drevil:
-
exactly Stormkeeper.
We may group all the USA folks together, so shipping is cheaper and faster... and then send to Europe, then Asia, etc.
It's just for the fun of it. FOR INSTANCE... here's a little sneak peak of another community that did something similar. see my next post:
-
EXAMPLE:
We played a little hide and go seek

then he got into a little trouble
(http://i140.photobucket.com/albums/r6/Patti_Dukez/100_1194.jpg)
but i rescued him
(http://i140.photobucket.com/albums/r6/Patti_Dukez/100_1191.jpg)
later on i had to go to the store, so he chilled with Fred in the pool
(http://i140.photobucket.com/albums/r6/Patti_Dukez/100_1203.jpg)
alright man, it's8een fun, but time to head off to *the next guy on the list*
(http://i140.photobucket.com/albums/r6/Patti_Dukez/100_1208.jpg)
see? isn't that fun? :D
-
Just make sure Nuke gets it last.
-
we'd arrange the list based on:
1) physical location
2) willingness (financial means taken into account - for postage) to participate
3) community seniority
I know communities that have done this with 120 people, and it's worked, and i doubt we'd get (or need) that many people here. I reckon a good 30 people would be nice though :)
-
I think Gary will be happy to know I have no dogs. But I do have a fish tank. :drevil:
-
and then send to Europe
Soo haw about too centrer of Europe? :D
Here in Poland we've got small but strong community for about 15 people which most of them i meet in person.
-
uhm, stupid question, isnt stealth supposed to be ...... dead?
-
Someone obviously never reads the News and Announcements.
-
I've been hoping someone was going to do that. Thanks, Ashrak.
Something like this has been in-progress for a year or so on the Adult Swim programming block's forums; in this case, the item is a shot glass. It actually came about as the result of a contest in the block's viewer bumps; people were given a certain amount of words to describe why they deserved to win the shot glass, and the winning entry said that they would get the glass, take a shot, and pass it along. At some point, someone actually built a custom-made traveling case for the glass, and there's all kinds of memorabilia that travels along with it. It's a pretty cool concept. :)
-
haha i like it! but a shot glass is too hard... we need to use something more durable :)

Read this. (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=54831.0)
If its a model, I want it to be fully posable!
-
in that case a GI Joe is probably the best bet
-
But you'd have to get him a little mini HLP T-shirt ;)
I'd also suggest a sandwich-esque gun on the model, but knowing how paranoid some mail organisations are, that may not be a good idea :D
-
yeah i wouldn't do that.
he doesn't have to "represent HLP" physically. :)
-
True, it's not vital, and pretty difficult to actually do, but it would have been nice if it was possible.
-
sounds cool
put me down :p
-
This sounds awesome. Unfortunatly, I'm going to be extremely busy and out of town intermitently until late November. I don't want to get home from a two-week long hike to see that the HLP guy has been sitting in my mailbox for the past two weeks, and you guys have been wonder what was up.
Maybe next time when you guys do it I'll be able, provided it isn't the same time next year. :D
-
Yeah sounds rather fun.
Trouble would be sending matter through the time vortex allowing me to communicate with you. I've not tried it before, and I'd like to know what the postal services would make of

OK so before i find a character, let's come up with an appropriate name.
HLP *name*
HLP Gary,
HLP Bob
etc.
c'mon. be creative.
-
CARL ^^
-
I like this idea, would be a cool experience methinks. :)
CARL ^^
Second!
-
Rawhide.
-
Carl it is!
so we agree it should be a GI Joe action figure? where you can manipulate it to be in practically any position? :)
-
I voted for Rawhide... :(
Yes, it shall be a GI Joe action figure! Give it a HLP logo or sth...
-
What about one of our store's shivan plushie bears? ;7
-
By default Shivan != plushie.
-
Yeah sounds rather fun.

You know, I'd pay to see the look on the postmans face when he seez that!
-
He should be named Polpolion.
Also, I'm in.
-
OK see the "Who all is in" thread.
-
Linked for good measure. (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,55145.0.html)

He should be a poseable Shivan!
